English Faculty News

Year 9 were given a creative writing assessment task and were asked to write a narrative using one of the five images that they were provided with as a stimulus for their creativity. Lachlan Martin wrote an amazing creative writing piece using the follow-ing image as a central idea for his story:

Dreaming State

I couldn’t breathe! Something was constricting me! I couldn’t see it, but I could feel it. Whatever was consuming my body, it racked me with an intense pain, but oddly enough, I was calm. It was start-ing to cover my eyes: it looked a lot like tree roots. Orbs of all different colours were floating above the ground: it looked like they were morphing into fruit.“Good luck Aelia,” said a deep, but oddly soothing voice. I had just enough time to see what looked to be a man in a white suit walking away from me. Then I woke up.“Get up,” grumbled my wife, Lucy. I decided not to reply with anything. Our relationship had been on a knife’s edge ever since I found out she was hav-ing an affair behind my back. Our agreement was: we woke up, I made her coffee, and then I bugged off for the rest of the day. The worst part was I didn’t get to see my daughter much. It was a pretty crappy agreement. Most of the morning I was thinking about my dream. I have been having it for the past week or so. It has been the exact same every night- what did it mean? I said goodbye to Maddison and left the house to go to work, like usual. Started my car, pulled out of the driveway and had just enough time to see a glimpse of a speeding car on my left… CRASH!!! ... The world spun. I opened my eyes, there was blood everywhere. I leaned forward… POP!!! …

Out came my faulty air bags… CRACK!!!, SNAP!!! ... That was my neck, definitely my neck. I could hear yelling, was that my daughter screaming? I couldn’t tell, I was losing consciousness fast. I could make out sirens in the distance, then black…“Robert Doorson?” said a deep, soothing voice, the same voice from my dreams.“What?” I said. “Where am I? Are my wife and child alright? Was anyone hurt?” I was panicking, I couldn’t see but I was slowly regaining vision.“Ah… good to see we still don’t put yourself first” said the voice, “your daughter Maddison is physical-ly fine, just grieving over her loss. Your wife for the most part is happy, seeing Steven Thymes will be a lot easier now, but if it makes you feel better, she will have guilt consume her soul as a price. As for the other driver, Nicolas Valuca, it wasn’t his time”.I could see I was standing in a forest of some sort, but I couldn’t see where the voice was coming from. “Of course it wasn’t his time,” I mumbled, “what do you mean ‘WE’, I’ve never met you before,” I said in a louder voice.“Yes you have” said the voice in a mocking tone. “You have interacted with me daily since you were born.”“Who are you?” I said. I was getting a little annoyed but I kept my cool. Whoever the voice was, even though I couldn’t see them, they bled power and respect.“I am God” the voice said matter-of-factly, “I am Al-lah. I am Satan. I am the Olympians. I am all God or Gods. I am the best pleasuring dreams and the worst horrific nightmares. I am the joy life can hold. I am the sad loneliness that can consume a person. I am the good and the bad. I am me. I am everyone but no one. I was you. You will be everyone, and you will be me”. A figure walked past me, it looked to be a man about 7-foot-tall, wearing a white three-piece suit, but the only facial feature he had was his mouth, everything else was gone. “Shall we?” he asked, beckoning me further into the woods.“So what happened to me?” I asked. I was a bit curi-ous.“You died on the way to hospital,” he said. “And be-fore you ask what will happen, you will be reincar-nated as a Roman girl”.“Wait, a Ro… WHAT?! What year?”“6.B.C,” he said casually.“So you’re sending me back in time?”“There is no such thing as time, here or in your uni-verse, but for your now simple mind, yes, you will be going back in time.”“Yeah… well what is ‘here’ exactly?”“It’s our garden, for each life you have lived, a tree grows.”“How m…”“1,297,367,481 trees are currently here, not includ-ing you.”

Year 8 PBL News

This term, Year 8 students had the choice to study one of the following projects in their Project C classes: -Bake It, Decorate It! -Detective Inspector -Against the Grain -Rock Star

Rajneel Lal of 8C reflected on his participation in the ‘Bake It, Decorate It’ project, a cake decorat-ing and design class.

Whoa… it has been such a great term and we have done so much in these five weeks, which is awe-some. With our teacher Ms. Martelli, we have participated in some great cooks, some theory and some fun which was the best. I will be go-ing through all the things we have done in these five weeks. Firstly, we began with the topic, with brainstorming a theme of decorations for exhi-bition. We had some explicit lessons around the instructions for baking a cake, safety rules includ-ing don’t run in the kitchen and always wash your hands, wear an apron before you cook. We also learnt about piping bag nozzles, piping bags and fondant.

Our first cook was to bake, ‘Whatever Biscuits’ which were really nice and really tasty. The next cook we had to pick any design and decorate a cupcake using frosting and candies. My theme was ‘Ghostbusters,’ which was cool. When we started working with the fondant, it honestly felt awesome - like Play-doh and some modelling clay. After each of our cooks, we completed an evalu-ation which was great to reflect on our progress and what we can do better next time.

Some other amazing cakes and sweets that we have baked this term are Coconut Meringues, Scones, Macarons and a honey cake in a mug!

“That’s a lot.”“No, for you to become like me, you must live out 383,934,315,924 lives. You have 382,636,948,443 more lives to live out.”“So I will eventually become a God?”“No, you will become you.”“But you said become like you, aren’t you a God? So, I will become a God?”“No, I am but a consciousness, not a God. You will stay you, I have been you, and therefore I am here, so will you in due process.”“So you’re a future me?”“How silly I was,” he said, with amusement in his voice. “No I am not a future you. Remember, there is no time.”I was dumb founded, I didn’t understand. My head hurt, my feet and legs more so from walking. How long had we been walking?“So there is an end to humanity?”“Yes.”“So when I take your pla…”“No, humanity will live on. You will become you in due process, your former self will then take your current place. As for now you are nothing but a foetus, growing.”“So where will you go after I take your place.”“I will die and make my own tree, but for now, you have to make yours.”“So you can die?”“Don’t be silly, ideas never die.”“I don’t get it.”“Be patient.”“Wait, before I go…”“Yes?”“… If I have lived… Ah, however many lives …”“1,297,367,481, not including you. Yes?”“… How come I don’t remember any past lives?”“That’s funny, I’ve never been asked that,” he mumbled, “Well, the longer you stay here, the more you will remember. You can’t remember all previous lives while in your birth place, your mind can’t handle it, but here you have no limits”.He was right, I could already remember. Serving in World War II, being a drug addict, committing suicide, being a bully… Was that a hover board? I had so many more questions, but before I could ask any more questions, a pain shot up both legs, I looked down, roots were tearing through my skin, and so were the orbs of different colours, just like in my dreams. I looked around and saw the other trees had fruit of all kinds. I saw the man, I’ll call him God, I hadn’t stopped walking as I was rooted in place. I could only ask him one last question.“Why does this happen?” I said in a strained voice.God chuckled: “That my friend… is the one ques-tion I can’t answer”.

Throughout the whole project, we have been moni-toring certain scientific facts when it comes to bak-ing the perfect cake and then using our findings to make our cakes better. Some interesting things that I have learnt is that a liquid is needed to turn ingredients into a dough e.g. water, milk, eggs and oil. Egg also lightens mixture. Eggs help bind ingre-dients to stay in the desired shape. Eggs and milk contain protein which helps the cake mixture to set when baked. Eggs and milk add flavour and colour. What a great term it has been!

Year 8... 2016 The Year That Was

It is nearly time for our next journey, which is to enter Year 9. I can remember when I first came in Year 8… so many expectations, and now we are so much closer to Year 9, how awesome does that sound? We have progressed so much from Year 7, which is awesome. Let me tell you about the year that was. Where do I start? Term 1 started with us learning about the life of the Vikings; it was a nice experi-ence and I really thoroughly enjoyed this topic be-cause our final product was to write a narrative. This year, we were also introduced to Google class-room and how to submit work on it. We also read a novel called ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ which was based off the movie. Our final project in Hu-manities was a culture and language study- I chose France. This week, we have to perform the script we wrote in French in front of the class! I am very nervous and excited!

In Project B, we began the year by making paper airplanes and paper boats- how cool was that! Throughout the year in STEM we had to design our own vehicle that was run by natural energy and it had to go 10 metres. We also built energy efficient houses and designed exercise and diet regimes which were awesome! We finished the year off in STEM by conducting our own experiment based on a driving question and presenting our findings to the class.

In Project C, I’ve rotated through all the TASCAPA projects with all the teachers. I’ve created an ad-vertising campaign, designed a Mini-Golf course with a Simpsons theme, and we have cooked loads of yummy dishes!

The last project this year, was student choice. I chose ‘Bake It, Decorate It’ with Ms. Martelli. which was really fun. The best part about Year 8 was that we had excellent teachers and went on excellent excursions. On the behalf of Year 8, I would like to say thank you for the support and the inspiration you guys gave us.

HSIE News- iManifest Workshops

Recently, a group of five students, including myself, attended the iManifest workshop in the city for three days. On Tuesday the 25th of October we got off at Central station where we began our work-shop at Academy XI. Many students from different schools attended the workshop as well.

We first started with an introduction followed by a QnA to the experts of design Dion Lee: director of Dion Lee, Troy Uleman, director of PTW Architects, CEO of Good Design Brandon Gien, and Janne Ryan of Ted X Sydney. During the remaining hours, we did many activities where we could learn about each other.

The following day, we had to get off at Wynyard Station as a group to start our next work shop at PTW Architects office. Here we broke up into four groups: architects, interior designers, urban plan-ners and landscapers.

Most of us became architects and we came up with a concept of shipping containers which are transformed into liveable homes. We also went through a concept that would potentially make a city great for high density living. While most of us in the group worked on the architecture, one of us worked at designing the interior of the container as an interior designer alongside other students.

On the final day of the project, we were at Town Hall David Jones to pitch our great ideas back to the designers. However, first we planned out eve-rything as we also made a quick PowerPoint pres-entation to present our ideas. Overall, as a group we learnt a lot about design and architecture. Not only was it a great opportunity whilst we are at school, but it was a great start toward what could be our future occupation. We made friends with the students who had attended the workshop as well. We all enjoyed this opportunity and we are all excited for the next iManifest event.

We thank Mr. Catalanotto for inviting us and the iManifest staff for giving us a great time as well as filling us with great ideas and joy.

Youth Frontiers Program delivered by MTC

This year seven students from our Year 9 ilearn Elec-tive Class took up the opportunity to be aligned with a mentor and participate in a program designed to build young people’s skills, capacity and community connectedness. This included the development and delivery of civic projects. One group of students have been focusing on volunteering at a local community hub that feeds homeless people and another group is fundraising for disaster relief. All students will be Student Ambassadors for our Year 6-7 Transition program. Students attended the Liverpool Uniting Church’s Community Hub this month to learn how to serve food and see how the The Hub operates. Students will be selling souvlaki to Year 10 to raise funds for their charity. LBHS hosted a graduation for the program last week. Well done, boys, you have represented your school well. From here they will be nominated for awards based on their programs brief, participation and outcomes.

Links to Learning delivered by MTC

Another fifteen boys participated in our Year 10 Links to Learning Program and will have their grad-uation next week. The boys have participated in workshops, including Job Coaching, Law Society, Save a Mate emergency care, Problem Solving and Team Building, Communication Skills, Healthy Re-lationships, Health and Nutrition and more. Next year, we look forward to continuing to work with the great staff from MTC who will be working with our Big Picture Academy students.

Pre-College Preparation Program for Year 10

This week, Year 10 are completing mandatory mod-ules in All My Own Work and Crossroads. All year 10 students must complete this before moving into Col-lege. Students will also participate in presentations from the Black Dog Institute, The Defence Force and UTS Tutors. Students must complete and return their booklets to provide evidence of completion of the pro-gram. Details of the AMOW modules can be accessed on our home page.

Summer Camp at UTS

Some very lucky students in year 10 have enrolled in a summer camp during the January school holidays. On Thursday 17th November, the students will attend an orientation day. Students chose areas of interest from Media, Design, Business, Engineering and IT and Health. The boys attending are Murtada, Manas, Vy-llreth and Clark. This is a huge commitment. The stu-dents will attend UTS full time for two weeks, ending in a graduation on the last day, on Friday 20th January, for their families to attend. This is fully funded by UTS and an amazing opportunity. We look forward to hear-ing about the program on their return next year.

One group of Stage 5 students chose to find the height of our flag pole. They used a measuring tape to find the distance between the flag pole and an observer. Then they found the angle of inclination to the top of the flag pole using their handmade cli-nometers. After some intense discussions around accuracy and instrumentation, facts and figures were finally crunched and Trigonometric ratios and formulas were applied and presto the problem was solved. Or so they thought.

They were then required to come up with a method to check their solutions. To check the accuracy of the process and the instrumentation, one group of students applied the same principles to an activity where they could physically check their answers by measuring the subject with traditional instruments like rulers and tape measures. One group chose to measure the height of each other. Their investiga-tion showed how surprisingly accurate their hand made clinometers were, and how invaluable Trigo-nometry was not only to their investigations but to the fields of construction, architecture and engi-neering .

MAKING MATHEMATICS MEANINGFUL

You may have noticed some strange goings - on in the playground of late. Students with weird contrap-tions , measuring, taking notes, discussing, arguing, and finally deciding on a course of action. This cal-culated commotion has been Mathematics classes in Stage 5 using Mathematics to solve real world problems. What better way to solve real world problems than to get out of the classroom and into the real world? Year 10 were asked to calculate the height of unusually tall objects such as a flag pole, trees and buildings which would be near impos-sible to measure using traditional instruments you would find in a classroom. Instead they used Trigo-nometry and created their own clinometers. Using a protractor, paper clip, straw and a thread to meas-ure the angle of inclination or elevation.

Robotics Pilot Program

In Week 3 (25th and 26th October), fifteen Year 8 students participated in a Robotics Pilot Program using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kits. The program was designed to explore student creativity and collabo-ration whilst refining critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. It consisted of explicit teaching of the programming software used to create a set of in-structions for the robot to follow, building through play, and a design challenge.

The students worked in pairs and were provided with a laptop and a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit. They brought with them their imagination. After initially following a set of guided instructions to build the ‘Harvey Mk II’, students experimented with building their own robot and coding sensors in order to pro-duce a robot that could move in a square, follow a line and pick up objects.

Yashar Khamissi completing the Harvey Mk II

At the end of the first day, students were given a de-sign challenge which had to be completed for the ex-hibition the following day. The challenge they were set was design a robot that can: (a) pick up an object (b) turn around (c) move 3 metres and, (d) place the object down.

The design possibilities were endless. Students worked tirelessly to build and program their robot for the exhibition. Fingers were sore, and at times frustration levels were high, but at exhibition every pair exhibited their solution to the challenge. It was fantastic to see the diversity of robots. What a fan-tastic effort, boys!

Year 7 PBL News

Drazzel – Project A and Project BThis term, Year 7 did a 5 week project called ‘ARE YOU MAD ABOUT MADD?’. This project combined music, martial arts and drama together. The subject we focused on mostly was Music because we are required to study this subject for around 100 hours between Years 7 and 8. We had to learn the different chords used on the ukulele to play and per-form a variety of songs.Year 7 then studied a bit of martial arts, but we most-ly focused on Karate as a main style. We had to learn a blue belt kata (a dance made for martial arts). The year group also studied Drama. In this subject, we had to design a mask which we used to act out different scenes. These masks were based off the masks used in the drama style “Commedia Dell’ Arte”.

Jovan - Project B – KarateThis term for Project B we have been learning a lot of things about Karate. We learnt how to defend ourselves against anything that comes our way. We also leant a lot of theory about Karate, like where it originated and the history. I mostly enjoyed the practical part of the project because we were out-doors and having fun. I enjoyed the theory part as well, but not as much at the practical. This term has been a blast thanks to our teachers Miss Stankovski and Miss Bui.

Andre - Project A – MusicDuring this term, in Project A, we’ve been learning about Ukulele. We had to do music from a booklet, and, after we finished, we had to make our own song. We learnt of a lot about music this term and it really helped us play the ukulele much easier. We learnt different chords such as F, G, C. They were the easiest chords to play but later on we learnt how to play more chords. This term has really been a fun term.

TAS/CAPA News

Year 12 students in the TAS/CAPA Faculty have been busy finishing their major projects this semester. Mr. Stanley had the Industrial Technology Timber class working on a range of projects from outdoor furni-ture, coffee tables, dining tables, bedside tables and poker tables. The boys and Mr. Stanley put in many hours before and after school to ensure that the pro-jects were finished on time. On the whole, the boys finished with their projects on a high note, stating that they would have done better if they had Mr. Stanley for the whole year.

Further to this, Mr. Bauman and I had the Year 12 Design and Technology class which was equally fo-cused on finishing their Major Design Projects. The Design and Technology students had projects rang-ing from child friendly medical equipment, wheel-able clothes, child friendly injection tables, a virtual garden, a tricycle, an electronic baseball bat and a 21st century computer lab.

I would also like to recognise the hard work of Ms. Wilson, our College Art teacher and Ms. Clerici, our College Music teacher, who also put in many hours before and after school to ensure that the major works and pieces were finished on time.

Furthermore, Mr. Cini, Ms. Martelli and Mr. Singh worked tirelessly with their SDD , CAP and IDL classes to complete HSC courses at the end of last term.

I would like to thank the TASCAPA department for all of their hard work and dedication and I look forward to another busy and productive year in 2017.

Mr. Amon

TAS/CAPA Head Teacher.
