Year 7 Project News

Diary of a Wimpy Kid CompetitionAs part of the Year 7 Project C: ‘Bouncing Back’, the boys have been focusing on issues such as overcom-ing resilience and adversity, which are faced by indi-viduals every day in society. To help the boys make a connection to these ideas, they are becoming thor-oughly engaged in the project by reading the novel “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”. The book not only focuses on issues such as bullying, but also the issues seen in family and school life through cartoons and draw-ings. To help the boys make a greater connection to the novel, 7T were entered into a school competi-tion to see who could design the very best “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” cartoon character. For two whole periods, the boys sat drafting, designing and using the novel to come up with the very best cartoon they had ever created. There was a great mixture of characters- some outrageous, some simply hilari-ous, and fabulous in their own way. Once the boys were happy with their final designs, it was up to the Humanities teachers to pick the winner. We were all left indecisive, but in the end, we decided on two winners. The winners knew they would have their characters published in this term’s newsletter.

Congratulations to our winners Aleksandar Vujance-vic (7T) and Breyton Vaatuitui (7T).

College boys on QandA!

On Monday 31st July, College Economics and Legal Studies students were invited to be part of the live screening of QandA. QandA is a current affairs pro-gram that discusses current political, economic and social issues in front of a live audience. The boys went into the ABC studios to listen to the discussion which included citizenship of politicians, an analysis of President Trump’s leadership, the threat of North Korea, changes to Australia’s tax system and China’s plans for trade expansion. The boys were also seen in the audience at different points of the filming!

Creative Leadership Program- Opera House Project News

This term a selected group of Year 9 students are involved in a project with the Opera House. This project focuses on the topics of sustainability, food waste and the impact our rubbish is having on our environment. Throughout this project we have in-vestigated in much detail about how to reuse recy-clable items which get thrown away. Every year the Australian family household produces enough rub-bish to fill a three- bedroom house, producing just about 2.25kg of waste every day. Worldwide, nearly 3 million tonnes of plastic are used to make water bottles every year. Mostly things that we throw away are unwanted food and plastics. Australia has now become the highest producer of waste in the world.

On Wednesday the 26th July, Ms. Sloan and Ms. Martins took us to the Opera House for our hook event. We started our journey at Warwick Farm station and headed to Circular Quay. When we got off at the station we immediately had lunch. After this we made our way to the Opera House where we met our teaching artist, Howard, and watched an amazing dance performance called ‘Bennelong’ performed by Bangarra Dance Company. The name of the performance is actually the name of the point that Opera House is set on, Bennelong Point. Ben-nelong was a very important indigenous man who represented the Aborigines in the Sydney area at the time of first British settlement in Australia. The performance went for 2 hours and it was fantasti-cally choreographed.

After the performance, we had a mini-tour around the Opera House with the Sustainability Officer. Did you know that the air conditioning and heating of the Opera House is powered by seawater? Surpris-ing, isn’t it! The tiles on the Opera House are also designed to self-clean when it rains which is cool and very sustainable.

Lastly, we stopped by a room in the Opera House where there was an installation called “Frugal For-est”. Now the Frugal Forest is a rainforest which is made out of rubbish. So the trees are made from stockings and the leaves are made from real estate signs and old posters plus they also had old clothes for the ground and lots more. We had a little chat with the artist who created this masterpiece and she told us about what inspired her to make the for-est and more.

The aim of this day was to inspire us and get our brains thinking about potential project ideas and possibilities for our own installation. At the end of this project, Liverpool Boys High are going to exhibit their own work at the Opera House- just like a real artist! It was a fun day and hopefully we go on more excursions like this.

Year 9 Mathematics Bridges, The Georges River and a Touch of Trig

“A stroll along the riverbank, painting a portrait of the view, catching the fish of the day while downing a sausage sandwich or two.”

These sound like the opening lyrics to a great song. What these words do is capture the mood of a very successful hook event that was filled with lots of fun and inspiration; maybe not for song writing; but definitely for the Year 9 Mathematics project on the Georges River. One inquiring local resident, after a chat with our boys commented, “Seeing mathemat-ics delivered this way makes you wanna go back to school.”

As part of this project, our boys will be required to build a bridge which is a miniature replica of one bridge crossing the Georges River. With many archi-tectural designs in place, it’s hard to choose from the array of bridge designs used to connect both banks of the Georges River. Some of the designs in use range from Truss, Beam, Arch, Cantilever, all the way to the dramatic suspension-type bridge design used in the Captain Cook bridge at the mouth of the Georges River. Which one will be the strongest of them all? Which one is the most beautiful? These are just some of the considerations that our boys have to take on board.

Of course, students couldn’t do this without a lit-tle bit of mathematics! Students have been learning about trigonometry, angles, distance and slope. All of which form the foundation for their understand-ing of bridge design, which they will have to com-municate during their exhibition, and which they will have to apply during their product construction.

With all this in mind, students had the opportunity to absorb our local natural beauty, so often over-looked, on what was a glorious sunny day. They rotated between three stations. The first involved them in painting a portrait of the riverbank while gathering ideas about the way the bridge could be designed/built such that it would fit in with its nat-ural surroundings. Then they undertook a spot of fishing…why not. This was followed up by a soccer game to release the inner energy and make way for the refuel. Of course the day would not be complete without a delicious sausage sizzle barbeque cooked up by Mr Ahmed and the boys. A day to remember not only for the fun and entertainment but also for the contextualised learning.

Rocky Road or Rocks????

Term 3 Friday 18 August 2017

Respect, Responsibility and Learning

8L STEM- Project B8L STEM –Project B had the opportunity to make edible rocks this term. As students embark on their journey to the centre of the Earth, they come across an array of rocks. Students learn about the differ-ent types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and meta-morphic; each of which is formed under different circumstances. Students have learnt the theory be-hind the formation of such rocks and were able to replicate sedimentary rocks in the kitchen.

Sedimentary rocks are those rocks that have been formed by the cementation of sediments. Conglom-erate rock is a sedimentary rock which is made of different sized particles. These particles include pebbles, small rocks and sand. We demonstrated how a conglomerate rock is formed in a fun way – by making rocky road! The chocolate melts (matrix that holds the sedimentary pieces together, usu-ally sandstone), Turkish delight (fossilised marine animals in rocks), Clinkers (land animals living on the edge of swamps and rivers) and Marshmallows (pebbles and other rock pieces forming new rocks) were used to make our edible rocks.

Sydney Opera House Collaboration

Liverpool Boys’ collaboration with The Sydney Op-era House is going full steam ahead! Working with Ms. Sloan, Ms. Martins and Howard Matthew from the Opera House, the Year 9 boys are busy explor-ing the ways they can use creativity to effect social change. The class is particularly focusing on sustain-ability and how we can raise awareness of the way society impacts our environment with their waste. The boys are currently working in groups to final-ise their proposals regarding what they would like to create or build; each of the groups’ products will contribute to an overall film that will screen at the Opera House once finished. Howard has been bringing in resources and the boys have been ex-perimenting with ways to recycle single-use plastics and waste into new objects, such as model cities, trees and plants, and even chessboard pieces. The photos below show the kids building model cities and filming them in action using stop-motion.
