  • The test centre for students from our school is:

Sefton High School Munro & Hector Sts SEFTON NSW 2162

All parents were sent a letter advising them about the test centre their child is required to attend. They were also sent a copy of a test information bulletin.

The test centre allocations and a copy of Test Information for Parents and Students are available to principals from the Department’s intranet site, https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/directorates/schoimpro/EMD/shs_publications.htm and parents may check test centre allocations at:-

High School Forms Meeting Thank you to the 67 families that attended our High Schools Forms meeting last Monday. Lots of information and hints were shared about how to get this process right. As was said at the meeting, if you are still unsure of what to write or want us to read over it, Mrs Pant and I are always available to help out. For those that didn’t attend, the forms should’ve gone home the next day with your child and the offer of help extends to you as well. Please ensure that you complete the forms and send them back to us by Tuesday 19 March.

Hats Hats are becoming an issue within our school again. As a school community, we all need to be aware of the rules surrounding our school hats. 1. If a child has no hat outside, they are instructed

to play in the shade. If they defy this instruction,

they can be put onto detention.

    2. Years K-4 are permitted to wear the Legionnaires

type cap (with a flap) or the bucket type hat.

Students are not to fold the flap inside the cap at

any time – the purpose of the flap is to protect

    your children.

    3. Years 5 and 6 get to wear a special cap. No other

grade will be permitted to wear this cap.

    4. School Uniform Policy dictates that a school hat

must be worn. Please ensure that your child

places their school hat in their bag overnight so

they don’t forget it. If they lose their hat, we

expect that it will be replaced at your earliest

    convenience.

P&C Meeting Our next meeting is the Annual General Meeting and will be held on Tuesday 12 March, starting at 9.15am in Lidbury Hall, directly after our K-6 assembly. We will also have a discussion about our Student Leadership Policy, so please come along – all are welcome!

Medical Issues As a reminder, we have a few children who have an extreme allergic reaction (which can be life threatening) to peanuts and other nuts. This means that this child cannot come into contact with other people who have eaten nut products (eg. Nutella, peanut butter, any types of nuts or any foods that contain nuts or nut products). I realise that the school can never really be nut free, but I’m sure that all parents can be very vigilant about this problem and not send their children to school with anything that contains nuts, including home made birthday cakes etc. This way, we will become nut-aware. It is a challenge for us at school as well as our community, but I am confident that everyone will pull together to make our school a safe place for every child. As a rule, if your child does present as ill before they come to school, it is better that you keep them at home, so as not to spread the disease throughout the school. We respectfully request that all children and parents of Lidcombe PS follow these guidelines over 2019 and beyond. If you have any enquiries regarding this, please contact me at the school office. Whilst on the subject of medical issues, if your child(ren) have contracted a virus or sickness of some sort (eg. measles, chicken pox, mumps etc), the office needs to know straight away. We have a child in the maintenance phase of cancer treatment, meaning this child’s immune system is at a very low level where illnesses like this could have a major effect. Please ensure you let us know straight away !!!

Mobile Phones While it is accepted that mobile phones play an important part in modern life and communications, it is important that all staff, students and parents accept that their use during class time and on various other occasions at school is inappropriate.

If mobile phones are to be brought to school by students, they need to be left at the office during school time and picked after school at 3pm. Parents and carers must give written permission for students to bring mobile phones to school. The school will not accept any responsibility for a mobile phone being lost or damaged.

  • For our new Kindergarten parents….. Our new Kindergarten students have settled in well and have begun their great journey for learning in the primary years with great enthusiasm. Just a couple of reminders are below to help you make your child as successful as possible: *All students need to wear closed in shoes – no sandals or thongs ! *All students must be wearing a school hat outside as part of our Sun Safe policy. They are only $15 at our uniform shop. PLEASE make sure you label all hats with your child’s name. *It is summer at the moment, so jumpers are probably not a wise thing to dress your children in. Put the jumper in your child’s bag if you are worried. *We have a program called “Crunch and Sip” happening at 10am in the classrooms. Your child needs a small portion of fruit (bite-sized) and water to drink every day for this activity. Please see further information regards Crunch and Sip in this newsletter. *Please ensure that you pack an appropriate amount of lunch to eat each day. We have witnessed some Kindergarten students take almost the whole of their lunch break to consume what they have for lunch. Play time is important too. *Whilst you can do a lunch order for your child, Kindergarten students won’t be served at the canteen windows just yet. We will give them a practice in Term 4, but until they have a better concept of money and what they can buy, we don’t let them buy at the canteen.

Fruit Breaks – Crunch and Sip Like last year, our staff decided they would follow the new program “Crunch and Sip” in their classrooms, to improve the way our students think at crucial periods during our school day.

As our morning session is 2 hours long, and physically, some children have not eaten for 4 hours between breakfast and recess, we are now asking that you provide a small portion of fruit (you determine the size depending on the age of your child(ren)), so they can spend 2 minutes at around 10am having a quick bite of something healthy to recharge them for the rest of the morning. Also we are encouraging the use of a water bottle filled with chilled water only, to sip on at this time. The rules are, however, that it must be a small piece of fruit and water only to take advantage of this break. If you would like more information about this program, see Mr. Lewis, Mrs Rush or visit www.crunchandsip.com.au. I am sure that this will lead to even more success in the classrooms.

Excursions and School Performances During the year the students will be provided with opportunities to participate in excursions, visiting performances and other activities that cost money. These activities are very important to the overall education of your child(ren) and therefore it is expected that all children involved will attend. If parents require assistance with payment for any of these activities, please speak to Mr. Lewis.

Car Parks / Parking – PLEASE READ THIS !!! Unfortunately, I must stress this particular point again, but in any case our new Kindergarten mums and dads might not be aware of this either. The car parking facilities (the Staff car park at end of Mills Street and the two located off Doodson Ave) must not be used by parents or carers to park in or walk through. Quite a few parents have been seen parking in our grounds or behaving in an unsafe manner outside the school, (mostly parents that know the rules !) but the fact is that if everyone started parking in our grounds, we would be seriously compromising the safety of the students. People have even been seen to let children out of the car whilst on the pedestrian crossing ! With parking rangers coming out just about everyday, that could actually end up being a very expensive mistake ! Please ensure you drop your child(ren) off outside the school in a safe manner or walk you children to and from school using the pedestrian access points, not through the car park. Other parents have now complained about our parents double parking in Doodson Ave and Mills St., or even parking over resident’s driveways. What is happening is extremely dangerous and stupid, with students getting out of cars from the wrong side of the car into oncoming traffic. Please do not double park to let your children out. It is against the law and I have no problem contacting the authorities and giving them your license plate number if you are doing the wrong thing out there. We now have a dedicated police officer appointed to oversee this situation, so if you are doing the wrong thing, you will be fined ! I would really appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Homework Homework has started (week 5) for all stages. Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 will be organising Homework under the same grid system we have used for the last few years. In these grids, there will be compulsory items to complete each week, as well as some optional activities for those students who are exceptionally keen. The format and content was discussed at the recent

  • Parent/Teacher Information nights. It is important to remember a couple of things: *If there is a problem with the homework, please seek out your child’s teacher or stage supervisor to discuss it. *If your child is feeling overwhelmed by the homework and tears start, stop them from doing the homework and inform your child’s teacher. *Some of the compulsory homework will be differentiated to suit the student’s level. Like everything, we are here to support your child and you as parents as well. Please let us know if there is a problem and we will rectify it as soon as possible.

Just a reminder The earliest time students should arrive at school is 8.30am. Any earlier than this means that I can’t guarantee their safety as a teacher will not be on the playground to supervise students until 8.30am. Please ensure your children arrive no earlier than 8.30am for their safety’s sake.

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. These awards in its current format have been running for over 3 years now. There were no recipients for either Week 5 & 6. Keep collecting your SLR awards !

Lunches Occasionally, parents may not have time to organise lunch in the morning as everyone might have got up late or there is no fresh bread etc. In these cases, we encourage you to use the canteen as they provide menu items that are quite nutritious and healthy for our students to eat. Sometimes, we don’t even have the money around to access the canteen through lunch orders, so parents may bring in a sandwich to eat and some water to drink shortly before the start of Break 1, which is absolutely fine. What isn’t fine is when parents bring in food items from KFC or McDonalds. These types of foods are very high in calories and sugars and are not very nutritious for students. Apart from that, other students see that some students would be getting these types of foods and then requesting their mum or dad does the same for them. Before this gets out of hand, please do not provide your children with KFC or McDonalds or any other type of fast food like it here at our school. Young minds need healthy foods and if we are going to see improvement in results, we need to look after this area very carefully. Also, if you need to deliver your child’s healthy, nutritious lunch, please deliver it to the office first, do not go directly

to the classroom as it could be deemed a child protection issue. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Other schools….. Far be it from me to tell parents where to send their children to school, but considering a new school of only a few students over what we have built up here at Lidcombe PS with all of our opportunities, focus on future learning, creative and critical thinking……it just doesn’t make sense at all. Please keep in mind that if you decide to go to a new school and you live outside of our drawing area (ie. Non-local), you may not get a place here when you return due to our numbers.

Toilets The toilets at the end of our school buildings are for the use of the students only. If you are on site and are in desperate need to go to the toilet, please go to the office and use the toilets there. As I’m sure you can appreciate, having adults and school students access the student toilets (someone even used the inside Kindergarten toilets !) at the same time can create a child protection issue. There are signs on our toilets saying “No Parents allowed” – please do not use them – it is a Child Protection Issue !

    Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

    Under the Companion Animals Act

    1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

    prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

    or otherwise controlled).

  • Closing the main school gate

If you are visiting the school during school hours and coming through the main school gate, please make sure the gate is closed behind you when you enter and when you leave to avoid a quick and easy exit for some of our younger students. We have a student in our school who is a flight risk, so this issue is very important !!! Also, we are keeping the pool gate near the Uniform Shop closed as well – please ensure when you walk through it, you close it behind you !

Also, we are closing the bottom gate at 9.05am for the next couple of weeks. We have a few runners in Kindy this year and I certainly do not want them to run outside the gates and onto the road. I know this is a hassle but it is necessary to do this. If you need to use the back gate, please exit by 9.05am. Thanks.

Newsletter If parents wish to have the newsletter emailed to them directly please fill out the form below. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage. We hope many of our families take up this option in the future. Thank you for taking up this option and saving just that little bit more of our environment.

    SCHOOL TIMES

Students MUST NOT arrive at school before 8:30 am and must leave promptly at 3:00 pm Parents are reminded that school supervision exists between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm. A Before and After School Care facility is provided on the school site for parents needing child minding. Contact 0401680686 after school hours for further details.

Leaving students unsupervised on school grounds has legal implications for both the school and parents.

Access to the school is only possible via the pedestrian gate near the sandpit (Mills Street) during school hours. All visitors must report to the school office. Unauthorised persons on school premises are considered to be trespassing and will be reported to the police.

Hi, I am the new Counsellor at Lidcombe PS. I am passionate about child and adolescent mental health, wellbeing and education and considers myself a lifelong learner. I came to Lidcombe after working in a primary and selective high school setting in the St George area. I have postgraduate qualifications in psychology and education and am a qualified School Counsellor and NESA registered teacher. I have experience in early intervention, psychometric assessments; gifted and talented; selective schools; Special Needs; child and adolescent mental health; internalising and externalising behavioural disorders; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders; culturally and linguistically diverse populations; and, students from

English as an Additional Language or Dialect backgrounds. My special interests are in child and adolescent developmental psychology, depressive and anxiety disorders; and complex mental health presentations.

As a School Counsellor, I can help students of all ages through a range of wellbeing and psychoeducational initiatives. Information students and families share with the school counsellor is confidential and the school counsellor will always obtain consent prior to passing any information on. Referrals to the school counsellor may be made by the Learning and Support Team, the parent or the student.

LPS will hold a school-wide clean-up on Friday, Week 7. This is part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our school environment clean, beautiful and rubbish free, so that the natural environment can thrive. The Clean-Up will take place after B1, where students will roam the school and tidy up an assigned area, under the supervision of our teachers.

We kindly ask that parents pack a hat and a pair of gardening gloves into their child’s school bag for the day. Tidy bags will be supplied to classroom teachers so children will not need to bring plastic bags. This means we will be reducing the disposal of plastics into landfill. Remember that any paper, hard plastics and foils should go into the yellow recycling bins. It’s always wonderful to see every student participating to help keep our school and country clean, year after year!

  • The long awaited polo shirt order has finally arrived this morning and will be on the shelves for sale this afternoon. The only thing outstanding now, I believe, is the new dresses in size 8. These have been ordered and hopefully will arrive by the end of next week.

Wow what an amazing response to our first Breakfast Club for the year! It was fantastic to see so many children eager for breakfast. I can’t thank those mums who

helped on the morning, to our regulars and those that just saw the need and jumped in, we wouldn’t have got through the morning without you. It’s still not too late to hand in your child’s Breakfast Club permission note to the office so that we can issue them their cards.

    WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 1

  • My Principal colleague at Regents Park PS had an incident recently of a man approaching students as they left the school. The police informed her that there had also been reports at the local catholic school over there as well.

Can you please remind your children about what to do in the event that they are approached by a stranger on their way to or from school ? The photo attached is an information sheet for teachers/parents to use with the children to make this conversation consistent and easier to have.

Can I also ask that we all be extra vigilant when seeing the children out of the gate.

    STRANGER DANGER

  • It is very concerning when young people have been exposed to any content that scares them or plays on their emotions, like those reported via the Momo Challenge. Unfortunately, the Momo Challenge is not the first, nor will it be the last, harmful online “challenge” or phenomenon to target our children.

Our research shows 81% of parents hand their child an internet-connected device by the age of 4, so active parental engagement and oversight of a child’s online activities is critical from the start, to help ensure they are prepared for what they may encounter. As young people often do not have the maturity or judgement to cope with confronting content online, it’s important to guide and instil critical reasoning skills, so they are aware that not everything they see or receive online is real.

We encourage parents to co-view, co-play, ask questions about the games and apps they are using, and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable about anything they see online.

Five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful content online: Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make

    sure they’re age-appropriate

Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to

Let them know not everything they see online is real or true.

Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps.

Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online, and contact Kids

Helpline if they need further support.

Parents who are concerned their child may be susceptible to self-harm should be aware of the signs to look out for and know where to go for help – see more info here: https://www.esafety.gov.au/about-the-office/newsroom/blog/is-your-child-at-risk-of-self-harm-or-suicide Parents can visit www.esafety.gov.au/iparent for information and advice on keep your child safe online.

Book Club provides families with an affordable and convenient way to bring the best in children’s literature into their homes. Each issue contains curated, age-appropriate titles that have been carefully selected and levelled by a dedicated team of professional booklovers.

How do I Order? 1. Simply grab your child's Book Club catalogue and either sign in or register your account. 2. Click on ORDER and then select your school and your child's class*. 3. Add your child's first name & last initial (so the school knows who the book is for) PLEASE NOTE:

Your child's details will never be shared with 3rd parties OR used for marketing purposes - this is for distribution purposes only.

CONJUNCTIVITIS - Pink eye is another name for conjunctivitis. It is caused by inflammation of the outer layer of the eye and inside of the eyelid that causes the eye to turn pink. It can be highly contagious, and it is important to diagnose the exact cause to ensure the right treatment. What is conjunctivitis? Conjunctivitis means the white of the eye is pink due to inflammation of the clear covering over it (the

conjuctivae). If you have pink eye, you might also have tears; a discharge, usually yellow or green, and crusty lashes, usually worse on waking; itchy or burning eyes and/or be sensitive to light Conjunctivitis can be caused by bacterial infection, viral infection, allergy, irritants such as dust or chemicals or a foreign body (such as sand or a small piece of rock). Conjunctivitis caused by viral or bacterial infection is highly contagious. Conjunctivitis diagnosis: Your doctor will talk to you and will examine you, especially your eyes. The doctor might take a sample of the secretions from your eye. Conjunctivitis treatment: The treatment for conjunctivitis depends on the cause. Viral infections improve without treatment, but bacterial infections require antibiotic eye drops. It can be difficult to tell them apart. Allergic conjunctivitis is treated with antihistamine drops or tablets, and conjunctivitis due to irritants may be helped by anti-inflammatory drops. If you have a foreign body in your eye, your doctor will need to remove it. Conjunctivitis prevention: People with conjunctivitis should try not to touch their eyes, and should wash their hands regularly. This will reduce the risk of it spreading. When to see a doctor: Whenever you have a conjunctivitis with any other symptoms, see your doctor if it doesn’t improve within hours. Should I keep my child home from school: Yes, until the discharge (pus) from their eyes has stopped – unless otherwise advised by your doctor.

To celebrate International Womans Day on Friday 8 March, Year 5 and 6 girls were treated to a visit by Cumberland Council and a female athlete earlier in the week, who gave a talk followed by a Q&A session. The girls also took part in some sporting activities.

  • Just a reminder to our families that if your child comes home wearing a

borrowed uniform or underwear it would be much appreciated if you could

wash same and return to the office as soon as possible. Toilet accidents,

bleeding noses, spilt food etc happens a lot with 820 children and we want to

be able to make your child feel clean and comfortable as soon as possible.

When our spare clothes don’t get returned we have to ring you, the parents, to come up to school to bring

clothes. It’s also a good idea, especially, for Kindergarten, if parents keep a spare pair of underpants and

socks in their bag. Thanks for your help in this.

We all know how tough it can be at times to find the money to pay that extra

bill that comes along just at the wrong time. If you are ever struggling to pay

for something at school please do not hesitate to come and see us in the

office or have a chat with Mr Lewis. We are always more than happy to work

something out with you, whether it’s just a short extension of time to pay,

some sort of payment plan or student assistance. We also know how easy it is to forget a payment which

is why we send out reminder invoices after the due date for moneys still outstanding.

We try very hard to keep our cost to parents at a minimum. For activities like Dance2bfit or our STEM

program (which is already subsidised by our P & C for $15 per student) or green events, we are charged

per child taking part; for fees such as PSSA and excursions, these are calculated on the number of children

participating to cover costs. It is unfortunate that if payment has not been received by the due date and

we haven’t heard from you, your child may have to sit out of these activities until payment is received.

The School Crossing Supervisor program is a state-wide program that contributes

to the safety of infants and primary school students. School crossing supervisors

help students use the crossings on roads adjacent to or nearby schools. School

crossing supervisors are provided where transport authority guidelines and

    criteria are met.

School crossing supervisors are provided to increase mobility and safety around schools by enhancing the performance of pedestrian traffic facilities. School crossing supervisors provide additional measures for the safe and efficient movement of primary and infant schoolchildren.

We are extremely lucky to have Raelene as our Crossing Supervisor here at Lidcombe PS. She does an amazing job looking after our families when crossing the increasingly busy John Street out the front of the school and I know that our parents appreciate all she does. It’s very sad to hear her stories of inconsiderate drivers, (unfortunately some who are even parents at our school).

Don’t forget to say hi to her and follow her instructions when crossing at the crossing or as a driver of a vehicle. Thanks for all you do Raelene!
