The NSW Government is reforming the curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12 so every student is prepared and ready for their future. The NSW school curriculum will be overhauled to improve standards, with changes starting in 2021 and all years learning the new curriculum by 2024. Unnecessary content will be cut, there will be a greater focus on literacy and numeracy, and TAFE and vocational training pathways will be modernised. The reforms were announced by the government last week. The changes are in response to the NSW Curriculum Review.

The reforms are based on:

• decluttering the curriculum by reducing unnecessary subjects

• a ‘back to basics approach’ that will see a renewed focus on the core subjects of English, maths and science

• Year 11 and Year 12 prequalification for university and TAFE courses.

You can read more about the curriculum reforms for all schools and keep up-to-date with the changes by visiting our school website or the NSW Department of Education website.

Holiday hints and tips

• Have a plan: With children involved, things might not happen the way you hoped but having a plan to begin with can definitely help.

• Schedule lots of activities: Each activity is only meant to engage your child for

30min - 1 hour. This means you’ll need to create a schedule involving a few different activities to keep your child stimulated throughout the day. You don’t need to plan every minute of every day – allow for flexibility. Sometimes your child will want to do something else or want to keep doing an activity for longer.

• Be prepared: Some activities might require ingredients or supplies, so you may

want to prepare for them ahead of time. • Take a break: Create solo activities that ensure your child is engaged but doesn’t

require your constant involvement. This will allow you to take a break as well. If you’re stressed your child may become stressed too, so ensure you take the time you need and be kind to yourself.

• Try for a good mix of activities: It is great for your child to become involved in

some offline activities like household chores, boardgames, puzzles, imaginative play with boxes and recycled materials, art and craft, reading, family picnics at home or in a local park, cooking or gardening with you, etc.

• Rest well: It has been a very challenging term for many of our families with lots

of changes and transitions to home and school due to COVID-19. It is important for children to get lots of good sleep and time for rest after a busy term. This will help them feel refreshed for their family activities and Term 3 learning.

If you need a break, the Service NSW before and after school care finder can help locate vacation care programs near you. For more school holidays ideas and advice, go to: education.gov.au/parent-and-carers/school-holidays. Happy and safe holidays!
