Survey Parameters

• All scientists and engineers invited, includes CSE’s

• 500 points to allocate to list of 2200 titles

• People had to finalize their votes to be counted

• Because of time constraints, (Ohio factor) we could not count unfinalized ‘ballots’

• Everyone who finalized the survey was counted

Points of Interest

• 1330 total respondents finalized the survey

• Each division well represented

• Many respondents used all 500 points on one title for which they were the only one interested.

• Extensive interest, some even came to library to fill in hard copies of survey

• Some degree of ‘other’ positions participation

How We Sorted the Data

• Compared top vote getters to number of people voting. Eliminated titles not selected by minimum of 10 people. These can be handled by smaller licenses.

• Took remaining 646 of 1741 total voted-for titles and compared to contracted titles through Elsevier, CDL and EBSCO.

• Identified new list of ‘wanted’ titles for future acquisition.

• Computed average cost of CDL title, list and discounted price

• Continuing constraints imposed by CDL, EBSCO and Elsevier agreements for FY05

Results of Survey

• Prior to recent cuts (FY04), the Library had 82% of top vote getter journals—Remaining 18% represents new highly sought

titles required by an average of 25 or more scientists (120 journals)

• After FY05 cut, Library has less of top vote getter journals—Analysis in process

What Can Be Done Now?

• Additional analysis needed along with pricing from vendors—Tradeoff of current journals that were not top vote-

getters with journals we don’t have that are top vote-getters

—Constraint on amount of additional dollars can get—Constraint on time

• Library can purchase with Lab/CDL discounts for divisions—Enables tracking—Potentially get cheaper prices

• Web of Science with 5 yr. backfiles currently available. No click-through as with Current Contents, which is no longer available through UC system. We hope to add more backfiles. $44K yearly base + 90K one time for each 5 yrs additional backfiles.
