Material Compliance und IMDS

In 1999, the International MaterialDataSystem (IMDS) was de-veloped by HPE on behalf of the OEMs. The aim was to create an IT platform to be used to meet the EU End-of-Life vehicle directive, which was open to all companies in the automotive industry. It would be employed to declare and archive the ma-terial of each and every part assembled in a car. This was the only way the OEMs could comply with legal requirements for recovery and recycling, and, later on, for proving compliance with substance restrictions. The IMDS has been established worldwide as a standard system for the automotive industry.

The EU Directive and its German implementation – the Altfahr-zeugverordnung – shall support an environment-friendly pro-duction that avoids waste, facilitates recycling and the re-use of waste material, and saves natural resources.

In recent years, more new requirements keep emerging even faster than before, the most signifi cant ones being substance re-strictions (GADSL, 2005), the REACh regulation (2007) or the Confl ict Minerals reporting (2010). Data declaration in IMDS allows more than 120,000 companies around the world that have been registered to date to take account of the increa-sed awareness of environmental issues and the resulting legal framework, by exchanging complete material data across glo-bal supply chains. This makes IMDS a suitable system for demonstrating material or product compliance which is well prepared for global requirements that will evolve in the future.

imds professionalWhen IMDS was available in an earlier version in 1999, imds professional already carried out trainings in partnership with HPE (back then EDS).

In 2000, when the fi rst version of the IMDS was published, imds professional established trainings for automotive sup-pliers all over Europe.
