Laurens Pool Project Committee Sees PVC Liner Option First HandRecently, four members of the Laurens Pool Fund Raising Committee met up with Dave Burbach and Josh Layer of Burbach Aquatics in Correctionville, Iowa and toured the newly renovated pool. Members of the Laurens Pool Fund Raising Committee able to make the trip were Ann Beneke, Chad Cleveland, Glenda Mulder and Lyle Wallin. Correctionville’s pool project is similar to ours in that they added a set of stairs for accessibility, demolished the kiddie pool, and installed a PVC liner to their existing pool. Correctionville added a zero-depth entry pool to their project. Correctionville is fortunate to have a bath house that still meets their needs. Their pool and bath house are just 30 years old, compared to ours at almost 60. The PVC liner installed in the original pool is textured to prevent slipping on the newly added stairs and where the water is shallower. The PVC liner has a smooth texture in deeper water to facilitate easier cleaning. The pool manager expressed that the PVC liner is easier to clean than the concrete surface and the water looks cleaner, possibly because of the color choice, which is white walls with a light blue floor. The zero-depth entry pool gets deep enough on the opposite end to have a water slide. At the shallow end, there is a small water feature. The new zero-depth entry pool has the water inlets in the bottom of the pool, with the skimmer at the top of the water. The old pool’s piping and drains were all replaced. The utility room is attached to the bath house, but of course has a separate entrance. The PH & chemical levels are all constantly monitored and chemicals (stored in an adjacent, separate room) are added automatically as needed. Each pool has its own pump and monitoring system, as required by law. A new chain link fence surrounds both pools. Correctionville’s project was financed by a $600,000 City bond issue, in addition to grants and donations. Laurens’s project will be financed solely with grants and donations. The Laurens Pool Committee members commented that the trip was well worthwhile and they feel recharged for the Laurens Pool Project! If you would like more information about the Laurens Pool Project, please contact any of these members: Lisa Anderson, Ann Beneke, Chad Cleveland, Thaine Hopkins, Glenda Mulder, Troy Oehlertz, Kelly Tate, Lyle Wallin or Laurens City Manager Hilary Reed. Donations are being accepted at Laurens City Hall.

Yard and Garden: Successfully Growing Grapes In Iowa Home gardeners can successfully grow grapes in Iowa’s climate. Grapes can flourish in a backyard garden or a vineyard, but obstacles like insects and knowing the proper harvest time can keep them from reaching their full potential. ISU Extension and Outreach horticulturists can help answer your questions about issues with grapes and proper growth. To have additional questions answered, contact the ISU Hortline at 515-294-3108 or [email protected]. When should grapes be harvested? Grapes must be harvested at the right stage of maturity to insure high quality. There are several indicators of grape maturity. Berry color, size, sweetness and flavor are the most useful indicators. Depending on the cultivar, berry color changes from green to blue, red or white as the grapes approach maturity. Color alone, however, should not be the sole basis for harvesting grapes. Berries of many cultivars change color long before they are fully ripe. At maturity, individual berries are full size and slightly less firm to the touch. As a final test, taste a few grapes for sweetness when berry size and color indicate the fruit is approaching maturity. Harvest grape clusters when the berries are sweet. When harvesting grapes, remove clusters with a knife or hand shears. Sound grapes can be stored in perforated plastic bags in the refrigerator for up to two months. Why are the berries in my grape clusters not ripening evenly? Several factors could be responsible for the uneven ripening of the berries within a cluster. Possible causes include overcropping (too many grape clusters on the vine), a potassium deficiency, moisture stress and 2,4-D damage. Overcropping is the most common cause for home gardeners. An average grapevine may have 200 to 300 buds which are capable of producing fruit. If grapevines are not pruned properly in late winter, the number of fruit clusters may be excessive. The vine is unable to ripen the large crop properly, resulting in uneven ripening of the berries within the clusters. In Iowa, 60 is the maximum number of fruiting buds that should remain on a grapevine after pruning. How can I keep birds from eating my grapes? The best way to prevent birds from eating the grape crop is to place netting over the grapevines. Netting can be purchased at garden centers or through mail-order companies. When placing netting over the grapevines, make sure the netting is secured to the ground to prevent birds from entering from below. How do I prevent yellow jackets from damaging my grapes? Yellow jackets are a type of wasp. In early summer, yellow jackets forage for caterpillars and other “meat” items and are beneficial predators. However, in late summer they prefer sweets such as soda pop, candy and the sweet juices of fruits and vegetables. Discourage yellow jackets from feeding on the grapes by harvesting the grape clusters as soon as they ripen. Remove any over-ripe or damaged fruit from the garden area. Do not leave beverages, candy or other food items in the vicinity of the grapevines as they may attract yellow jackets to the area.

Beef Quality Assurance Workshop Offers Certification for Northwest Iowa ProducersMajor beef packers are requiring that feedlot producers who sell cattle to their plants must be Beef Quality Assurance certified. To help northwest Iowa cattle producers accomplish this, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the Iowa Beef Center, Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association are co-sponsoring a BQA workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at the ISU Extension and Outreach Sioux County office from 10 a.m. to noon. ISU Extension and Outreach beef specialist Beth Doran said that while the certification is mandatory for producers in order to sell to packers, the information producers receive from the BQA session is valuable in and of itself. “Consumer surveys indicate that consumers want to know how the beef they eat is raised,” Doran said. "The BQA program addresses this and provides best management practices regarding cattle care and handling, management of feed ingredients and medication, biosecurity and record keeping." Other topics featured at the workshop include feedlot self-assessments, current and future trends in beef production, and results from the 2016 National Beef Quality Audit. This audit focused on cattle transportation, animal identification, carcass quality and animal well-being. One message from the audit was consistent and important – BQA is an important strategy to increase consumer confidence. The program flyer has all the details for the session. Workshop participants will obtain their BQA certification, which will be effective three years from the training date. To maintain integrity of the BQA program, all BQA certification in Iowa is administered by the Iowa Beef Industry Council. There is no cost to attend the workshop, but participants are encouraged to preregister to assure adequate materials by contacting Doran by phone at 712-737-4230 or [email protected].

Cover Crop & Wetland Field Day Planned for August 30th Near Gilmore CityIowa Learning Farms, in partnership with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Iowa Corn Promotion Board, will host a cover crop and wetland field day near Gilmore City on Wednesday, August 30. The 5:30-7:30 p.m. event held at the ISU Drainage Research and Demonstration Project, owned by the Pocahontas Soil and Water Conservation District site, is free and open to the public. It will begin with a complimentary dinner. The field day will feature Bob and Jay Lynch, Humboldt County farmers. Together the father and son have incorporated many conservation practices into their management of their Century Farm. After adopting a no-till and strip-till system over seven years ago, the duo has continued to look for ways to protect their soil and its health. In 2012, they choose to seed cover crops on about 140 acres of prevented-plant land. After seeing the benefits, cereal rye cover crops have been an essential tool in the Lynch farming operation. They will share their experiences with the practices and tips for making a no-till/strip-till and cover crop system work. Also speaking is Matt Helmers, ISU professor and Ag and Biosystems engineer, who will share results from the over twenty-five years of research collected at the drainage site. Local watershed coordinators, Lee Gravel with North Raccoon Watershed and Jordan Kolarik with Boone River Watershed, will share project updates and opportunities to get involved. The field day will conclude at a nearby nitrate removal wetland with William Crumpton, ISU professor of environmental science and wetland ecology expert. The field day will be held at the ISU Drainage Research and Demonstration site. From Gilmore city, go two miles west on Highway 3, then one mile north on 320th Avenue and then one-half mile west on 510th Street. The workshop is free and open to the public, but reservations are suggested to ensure adequate space and food. Contact Liz Juchems at 515-294-5429 or email [email protected]. For more information about Iowa Learning Farms, visit the website: www.iowalearningfarms.org.Established in 2004, Iowa Learning Farms is building a Culture of Conservation, encouraging adoption of conservation practices. was held in July where children built paper rockets, racecars, and propelled water balloons. The children were amazed by the distance the paper rockets were launched and they could toss water balloons across the park! Creative arts day camps found the children taking pictures and learning all about their cameras. Design decisions had the children learning about line, texture, color, and space and helped them plan their own bedroom design. String art and painting were among some of the other activities the children worked on during the day camps. A full week was dedicated to learning to use the new EV3 Lego Mindstorm Robots. 4-H’ers learned how to build and program the EV3’s using problem-solving skills. Our summer activities have ended with school starting soon, but our new 4-H year begins September 1 with a completely new set of activities for all children in fourth through 12th grade! If you would like your child included in these fun and educational activities, please contact the ISU Extension and Outreach Office Pocahontas County at 712-335-3103.
