Las Palmas es líder en reparaciones navales, suministro de combustible, pesca y tráfico de contenedores en el Atlántico Medio Oriental. In this way, Las Palmas is able to satisfy the whole range of demands from any port operators or shipowners.
Over the years, Las Palmas has become the leading port in the East Mid Atlantic for shiprepair, bunkering, deepsea fishing and container handling. Moreover, its high degree of connectivity, mainly with West Africa, has given it the status of a European-level trade gateway to African markets.
It also stands out as a cruise port and yachting base for transatlantic crossings, with a highly developed tourist hin-terland that benefits from favourable climatic conditions.
Las Palmas Ports are a cornerstone of the Canary Islands’ economy because of their contribution to gross domes-tic product and to the international expansion of its economy.

Las Palmas, el mayor de todos estos puertos, funciona a nivel internacional, en tanto que los demás tienen cometidos especializados o regionales (ver el capítulo sobre otros puertos de Islas Canarias). En su conjunto, estos puertos registraron un tráfico combinado de casi 20 millones de toneladas en 2009.
Gracias a su ventajosa ubicación en la encrucijada de rutas entre África, Europa y las Américas, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria se ha transformado en un puerto de escala universal, con capacidad para atender buques de toda índole. En su papel de plataforma logística de los tres continentes mencionados, el puerto tiene la posibilidad de atraer niveles de tráfico cada vez mayores. Otras ventajas competitivas contribuyen a explicar el éxito de Las Palmas como el puerto más activo de la franja de la costa oriental del Atlántico Medio y costa occidental de África. Las Palmas, the largest port, operates at international level, while the others have specialised or regional roles (see chapter on other Canary Islands ports). Together, these ports recorded a combined traffic of nearly 20 million tonnes in 2009.
Thanks to its favourable location, at the crossroads of routes between Africa, Europe and the Americas, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has become a universal port of call, able to deal with vessels of all types. As a logistics platform for all three continents, the port has the poten-tial to attract ever-growing levels of traffic.
Other competitive advantages help to explain the success of Las Palmas as the busiest port in the Eastern Mid Atlantic and West Africa range. They include:

Todo ello contribuye a que el puerto desempeñe un múltiple papel, como:
1. Centro de transbordo y plataforma logística de
contenedores y otras cargas comerciales, a escala
regional (Islas Canarias), nacional (España) y
tricontinental (Europa-África-las Américas).
2. Estación de servicio para los buques que surcan
las rutas atlánticas, con una larga tradición de
competencia en el abastecimiento de combustible,
aprovisionamiento de buques y reparaciones navales.
3. Base consolidada de las flotas pesqueras
internacionales.
4. Puerto de pasajeros, con prestación de servicios tanto
a los cruceros como a los transbordadores (ferry).
5. Centro de regatas, espléndidamente situado para dar
servicio a las travesías transatlánticas.
Poco puede pues sorprender el hecho de que Las Palmas se clasifique — dentro de la liga de los puertos españoles— en las primeras posiciones para una serie de actividades, ocupando el primer lugar en reparaciones navales, el segundo en pesca y abastecimiento de combustible, y el cuarto en lo que concierne al manejo de contenedores y tráfico de pasajeros.

As a result, the port has a multipurpose role:
1. Transhipment centre and logistics platform for containers and other commercial cargo on a regional (Canary Islands), national (Spain) and tricontinental (Europe-Africa-Americas) scale.
2. Service station for ships on Atlantic routes, with a long tradition of competence in bunkering, provisions and shiprepair.
3. Well established base for international fishing fleets.
4. Passenger port serving both cruise ships and ferries.
5. Yachting centre, ideally positioned to support transatlantic voyages.
Small wonder that Las Palmas ranks high in the league of Spanish ports for a range of activities, including first for shiprepair, second for fishing and bunkering and fourth for container handling and passenger traffic.
In addition, Gran Canaria Airport, with its many con-nections, is a vital link in the logistics network that has grown up around the port activities of Las Palmas.

Por otra parte, el Aeropuerto de Gran Canaria, con sus múltiples conexiones, es un eslabón esencial de la red logística conformada en torno de las actividades portuarias de Las Palmas.

Las Palmas se ha transformado en la puerta comercial por excelencia hacia África Occidental, lo que obedece no solo a su vecindad con ese continente, sino también a que muchos puertos de dicha región carecen de instalaciones modernas y de puertos en aguas profundas.
Más de un tercio del tráfico del puerto guarda relación con estos mercados, abastecidos principalmente a través de una eficiente red de buques menores (feeder). Los servicios son prestados por unas 25 líneas regulares, con frecuencias de entre una y ocho escalas mensuales. Estos servicios conectan a Las Palmas con una extensa lista de puertos africanos, desde Casablanca (Marruecos) hasta Durban (Sudáfrica).
El mapa de la página siguiente muestra la escala relativa del comercio desarrollado entre Las Palmas y cada uno de los países africanos, tomando como base la densidad de conexiones.
Las Palmas puede además considerarse como un punto de referencia para África, no solo por su papel como centro de intercambio comercial, sino también como proveedor de servicios técnicos y de gestión.

Logistics centre for humanitarian aid to West Africa
ThePortofLasPalmasplaysakeyroleinprovidinglogis-ticsupportforhumanitarianaidtoWestAfricabyinter-nationalorganisationsliketheRedCrossandtheWorldFoodProgramme.
In2009theRedCross/RedCrescentopenedaninterna-tionallogisticscentreinthePortofLasPalmas,comple-mentingitsotherbasesinDubai,MalaysiaandPanama.Thenewcentrehasacapacityof12,000cubicmetresandatotalareaof6,780squaremetres(2,427squaremetresofcoveredstorageand4,353squaremetresofopenstorage)tobefurtherextendedinthenearfuture.

to Africa but also because so many West African ports lack modern installations and deepwater quays.
Over one-third of the port’s traffic is related to these markets, which are served mainly by an efficient network of feeder vessels. Services are provided by some 25 regular lines with frequencies of between one and eight calls per month. These services link Las Palmas with a long list of African ports, from Casablanca (Morocco) to Durban (South Africa).
The map on the next page shows the relative scale of trade between Las Palmas and each African country, based on the density of connections.
Moreover, Las Palmas can be seen as a reference point for Africa, not only in its role as a centre of trade, but also as a provider of technical and managerial services.
In this context, a pivotal role is played by the Port of Las Palmas Foundation, one of the most influential members of the Regional Chapter [Canarias-Africa] of the Interna-tional Cargo Handling Co-ordination Association.
This organisation, whose main goal is security and effi-ciency in the international transport of goods, includes members from such categories as port authorities,
En este sentido, la Fundación Puertos de Las Palmas —uno de los miembros más influyentes de la Sede Regional [Canarias-África] de la Asociación Internacional para la Coordinación del Manejo de la Carga— desarrolla una función de vital importancia.
Esta organización, cuyo principal objetivo es la seguridad y la eficiencia en el transporte internacional de mercancías, está integrada por miembros de diversas categorías, como autoridades portuarias, cámaras de comercio, asociaciones comerciales, institutos de promoción, consejos navieros, compañías estibadoras y otras empresas privadas.
Dentro de este marco, existe toda una gama de iniciativas de cooperación, que incluyen la realización de promociones conjuntas (bajo el estandarte de los Puertos del Atlántico Medio), financiación de proyectos, intercambio de conocimientos y experiencia, planes de formación y misiones comerciales, así como participación en ferias comerciales y conferencias.
Las Palmas desarrolla un papel de liderazgo en estas actividades gracias a la experiencia de su comunidad marítima, que está en posición de brindar una adecuada asistencia a sus socios africanos. Un ejemplo interesante lo constituyen los cursos de formación para trabajadores y personal gerencial de puertos africanos, que han atraído hasta el momento la asistencia de más de 500 técnicos.
El Puerto de Las Palmas tiene además contratos de cooperación específicos con puertos de Marruecos, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau, Costa de Marfil, Ghana, Togo y Benín, así como con organizaciones transportistas en países sin salida al mar, tales como Burkina Faso y Níger.
En conclusión, el puerto y la ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria juegan actualmente un papel importante en la evolución de las relaciones entre Europa y África, lo cual se ha visto reforzado por la decisión de la Unión Europea de establecer en Las Palmas una oficina para el control de las políticas de la UE en África.

Within this framework, there is a range of co-operation initiatives. They include joint promotion (under the Mid Atlantic Ports banner), financing of projects, exchange of knowledge and experience, training plans and commercial missions as well as participation in trade fairs and conferences.
Las Palmas leads the way in such activities thanks to the experience of its maritime community, which can offer the right assistance to African partners. An interesting example is training courses for workers and managerial staff from African ports. So far, these have brought an overall attendance of more than 500 technicians.
In addition, the Port of Las Palmas has signed specific co-operation agreements with ports in Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin as well as with transport organisa-tions in landlocked countries such as Burkina Faso and Niger.
To sum up, the port and city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria now have an important role to play in developing relations between Europe and Africa. This has been reinforced by the decision of the European Union to establish an office in Las Palmas for the monitoring of EU policies in Africa.

In addition to tourism, the transport sector is a major pillar of the Canary Islands economy and its ports have a key role to play in this regard.

If one considers only the direct effects of port-related activities, the results are impressive:
• Turnover of about €1,300 million
• Just over €300 million of added value
• Over 4,500 people employed directly.
Nearly half of these jobs are in cargo handling (10 per cent for container transhipment alone), followed by shiprepair (32 per cent), warehousing and provisions (nine per cent), bunkering (seven per cent) and other sectors including passenger traffic (about three per cent).
The composition of added value by categories is similar, but with a stronger contribution from bunkering (19 per cent) and a smaller contribution from shiprepair (24 per cent).
Finally, bunkering services account for the largest share of turnover – over 50 per cent.
The Input-Output Tables for Canarias (2002), showing the statistical relationship between all branches of the economy, show the indirect and induced effects of port activities on the regional economy.
As a final result, the following picture emerged for the year 2005:
• The overall demand for port services that Las Palmas has been asked to meet (€873 million) has generated – through input-output relations – an additional product of €1,566 million, equivalent to 2.83 per cent of the Canary Islands’ GDP.
• Of this figure, about €578 million is added value.
• Nearly 10,000 jobs have been generated.

Existen fuertes vínculos del Puerto de Las Palmas con otros sectores claves de la economía de Gran Canaria como el turismo, la industria y zonas comerciales, así como también el aeropuerto.
De especial interés resultan las zonas de desarrollo, en función de la posibilidad de crecimiento económico por la continua expansión del puerto. Estas zonas, que disfrutan de un régimen fiscal privilegiado orientado a lograr nuevas inversiones, comprenden la Zona Franca Gran Canaria, la Zona de Actividades Logísticas (ZAL), y la Zona Especial Canaria (ZEC). En su conjunto, cubren una superficie superior al millón de metros cuadrados.
En el extremo norte del puerto, donde se está construyendo el nuevo Puerto Esfinge, la ZAL y una zona franca de 50.000 m2 se encuentran en la primera etapa de desarrollo. Ya hay varios lotes ocupados por empresas dedicadas a servicios logísticos, de aprovisionamiento y abastecimiento de combustible. Se esperan inversiones adicionales en breve y las perspectivas, a medida que estos nuevos servicios portuarios van entrando en funcionamiento, son excelentes.

RELATIONS BETWEEN PORT AND OTHER ECONOMIC ENGINES OF GRAN CANARIA
There are strong ties between the Port of Las Palmas and other key sectors of the economy of Gran Canaria, including tourism, industry and the commercial zones as well as the airport.
Of particular interest, in terms of the potential for eco-nomic growth related to the ongoing port extension, is the development zones, which enjoy a privileged tax regime in order to attract new investment. These consist of the Free Zone (Zona Franca Gran Canaria), the Zone for Logistics Activities (ZAL) and the Special Economic Zone (ZEC). Together they cover an area of more than 1 million square metres.
At the northern end of the port, where the new Esfinge harbour is under construction, the ZAL and a 50,000 square metre Free Zone are in the first stage of develop-ment, with several plots already occupied by companies involved in logistics, provisions and bunkering. Other investments are expected soon and the outlook is bright as these new port facilities come on stream.
In the south-east of Gran Canaria, another sector of the Free Zone (250,000 square metres already available plus 200,000 square metres of planned extension), together with plots of the ZEC have been equipped for indus-trial activities, just next to the port of Arinaga, which is managed by the Port Authority of Las Palmas.

The port is naturally protected by the volcanic hills of La Isleta to the north, which act as a barrier against the prevailing north-west trade winds. This protection is reinforced by a long breakwater, running north-south, called the Dique Reina Sofía.
The port is divided into two harbour basins, Dársena Exte-rior and Dársena Interior, separated by a linear pier, the Muelle León y Castillo. Total water area is 2,350 hectares. A third basin, Dársena de la Esfinge, is under construction.

El Puerto de Las Palmas tiene 40.000 m2 de espacio de almacenaje bajo techo y 300.000 m2 de espacio de almacenaje al aire libre, así como 175.000 m3 de depósitos frigoríficos, y casi 330.000 m3 de espacio para el almacenaje de aceite y combustibles.

The Port Authority (Puerto de La Luz) has jurisdiction over a total area of 3,215,532 square metres including 1,929,710 square metres on concession or available for new users. The operating quays have a combined length of 15,265 metres following a recent extension of Dique Reina Sofía and expansions of both the container and the cruise terminals. These figures are set to grow as port development projects go ahead.
The Port of Las Palmas has 40,000 square metres of covered storage and 300,000 square metres of open storage as well as 175,000 cubic metres of refrigerated warehousing and nearly 330,000 cubic metres of storage for oil and fuel.

El Puerto de Las Palmas está conectado por carretera con el resto de Gran Canaria. En particular, la autopista GC-1 permite la conexión con el Aeropuerto Internacional de Gran Canaria (24 km al sur del puerto) y con las zonas industriales y los enclaves turísticos al Este y Sur de la isla.
Se han instalado tres portales de carga con el fin de permitir el acceso al puerto desde la ciudad de Las Palmas:
• El primer portal se encuentra a la entrada del Muelle
Santa Catalina y atiende a una parte de la Dársena
Interior.
• El segundo portal (Plaza Belén María) permite el
acceso a muelles y atraques importantes, como el
Muelle Primo de Rivera, Muelle Grande, Muelle León
y Castillo y la totalidad de la Dársena Exterior.
• El tercer portal (zona industrial El Sebadal) no está
actualmente en funcionamiento. Se espera que reabra
cuando se continúe con el desarrollo de la superficie
portuaria de la vecina sección Norte.
La red vial interna del puerto consta de dos vías principales, de 4.000 m y 2.700 m de largo respectivamente, que interconectan todos los sectores del recinto portuario. Estas carreteras confluyen cerca del extremo terrestre del Muelle León y Castillo.
ROAD CONNECTIONS
The Port of Las Palmas is linked by road with the rest of Gran Canaria. In particular, the GC-1 motorway provides a link with Gran Canaria International Airport (24 km south of the port) and with industrial zones and tourist resorts in the east and south of the island.
Three freight gates have been installed to allow port access from the city of Las Palmas:
• The first gate is at the entrance to the Muelle Santa Catalina pier and serves part of the Inner Harbour (Dársena Interior).
• The second gate (Plaza Belén María) provides access to principal quays and berths such as Muelle de Primo de Rivera, Muelle Grande, Muelle León y Castillo and the whole Outer Harbour (Dársena Exterior).
• The third gate (industrial zone El Sebadal) is not currently in operation. It is expected to reopen when the neighbouring northern section of the port area is developed further.
The port’s internal road network consists of two main thoroughfares, 4,000 metres and 2,700 metres in length, connecting all sectors of the port estate. These roads meet near the landward end of Muelle León y Castillo.

Container handling is one of the cornerstones of the port economy of Las Palmas. Competitive advantages such as strate-gic location, state-of-the-art handling technology, productivity and the wide availability of shipping and cargo services have all contributed to the growth in traffic.
Owing to its status as a tricontinental platform linking Europe, Africa and the Americas and a natural trade hub for West Africa, a large share (over 60 per cent) of the container throughput of Las Palmas is transit cargo (second place among Spanish ports) and the containerisation rate stands at 82 per cent.
The port has three container terminals, run by experi-enced operators with an international background. They provide a total quay length of over 3,000 metres, with draughts from 10.0 metres to 18.0 metres, and nearly 600,000 square metres of surface area. These three terminals have a combined handling capacity of about 3 million teu per year.
There are modern ship-to-shore gantry cranes – two super post panamax, four post panamax, 15 panamax and one feeder crane – as well as yard equipment in the shape of 44 transtainers. This has produced a high rate

At Muelle León y Castillo, the company Operaciones Portuarias Canarias S.A. (OPCSA), in which the shipping line MSC is a stakeholder, has a total surface of 332,000 square metres on concession with an overall quay length of 1,780 metres and draughts of 14.0 to 18.0 metres.
The container terminal is also equipped with a double fixed ro-ro ramp and has a handling area of 80,100 square metres. Ship-to-shore equipment includes two panamax, four post panamax and two super post panamax cranes, while 26 transtainers are available on the yard. The terminal can accommodate up to 10 vessels.

TERMINALES CEREALERAS
El Puerto de Las Palmas posee dos silos graneleros en funcionamiento. El mayor de los mismos, gestionado por Silos Canarios, está situado en el Muelle Grande y tiene una capacidad de almacenaje de 30.000 toneladas. El silo tiene elevadores neumáticos de granos con tubos de aspiración capaces de descargar o cargar los buques a una tasa de 250 toneladas por hora. Se dispone de una báscula de 60 toneladas de capacidad. Los cereales pueden cargarse en vehículos de transporte carretero embolsados (12 bolsas por minuto por cada línea de carga) o a granel. Este servicio ha obtenido la certificación de calidad ambiental ISO 14001: 2004.
El segundo silo, gestionado por Graneros de Las Palmas S.A. en el Muelle Elder, cuenta con un sistema de cinta transportadora subterráneo que permite un ritmo de descarga y de carga de 200 toneladas por hora. La capacidad de almacenaje es de 12.000 toneladas.

In terms of dry bulk cargoes – notably cereals and cement – the port mainly serves the regional market, but its facili-ties are also used to support humanitarian aid to Africa.
CEREAL TERMINALS
The Port of Las Palmas has two grain silos in service. The larger of these, managed by Silos Canarios, is located at Muelle Grande and has 30,000 tonnes of storage capacity. The silo has pneumatic grain elevators with intake tubes capable of discharging or loading vessels at a rate of 250 tonnes per hour. An electronic weighbridge of 60 tonnes capacity is available. Cereals can be loaded onto road vehicles in bagged form (12 sacks per minute for each loading line) or in bulk. This installation has attained the environmen-tal quality certification ISO 14001: 2004.

El cemento también puede entregarse en bolsas paletizadas, a razón de 200 toneladas por hora.
El tercer silo cementero está situado en el atraque interior del Dique Reina Sofía Sur, donde Granintra S.A. tiene una concesión de 8.053 m2.
En el mismo muelle, Gramelcan S.L. opera en una terminal con una superficie techada de 2.500 m2 (superficie total 10.000 m2), para la descarga, almacenaje, muestreo y entrega final de graneles secos minerales y vegetales para la industria y la construcción, y también para forrajes.
Esta instalación se utiliza asimismo para la producción de argamasa, que se entrega embolsada o a granel.

Refinería Aceitera Canaria S.A. cuenta con dos cintas transportadoras en el Muelle Grande para la descarga de aceites vegetales.

Toda la pesca de terceros países debe someterse a inspección en un Puesto de Inspección Fronteriza aprobado por la UE antes de poderse importar a territorio de la UE. Asimismo, se realiza inspección a todos los pesqueros de terceros países. Se garantiza tanto la realización de controles eficientes como el rápido despacho de la mercadería.
En 2009, más de 800 buques de pesca de gran altura hicieron escala en el Puerto de Las Palmas. El tráfico total de pescado congelado fue de 550.000 toneladas.

All catches from third countries have to pass through an EU-approved Border Inspection Point before being imported into EU territory. Similarly, all fishing vessels from third countries are subject to inspection. Efficient controls and rapid dispatch of goods are guaranteed.

Repnaval, en el extremo terrestre del Dique Reina Sofía, realiza reparaciones de buques menores. Tiene cinco rampas de lanzamiento, con una longitud máxima de 120 m y 18 m de ancho, para embarcaciones de hasta 4.000 trb.
Ambos astilleros reparan más de 400 buques al año y todos sus trabajos cuentan con certificación de calidad según la norma ISO 9002.
Estos servicios se complementan con la disponibilidad de gran cantidad de experimentados subcontratistas y talleres independientes, junto con servicios de consultoría marítimos, tales como seguros e inspecciones. En total, el sector de reparaciones navales responde por casi 1.500 puestos de trabajo, constituyéndose así en una de las principales fuentes de empleo en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The shipyards of Las Palmas are equipped for repairs, maintenance work, conversions or outfitting of any type of vessel, both in dry docks and afloat.

In particular, Naviera Armas has established a network of daily connections known as Autopista Marítima de Canarias (Canary Motorway of the Sea) to meet each island’s demand for both logistics supplies and passenger transport. This task is carried out by the most modern ro-pax fleet in Europe, with eight newbuildings including the largest vessel of this class in Spain.
In addition to inter-island services, Las Palmas is linked by ferry with ports in continental Spain and other countries. Acciona Trasmediterránea oper-ates a three times a week ro-pax service to Cádiz and a connection with Seville, while Naviera Armas, as well as linking all the islands of the archipelago, connects Las Palmas with Madeira and Portimão (Portugal) as well as with El Aaiún (Western Sahara).

TRÁFICO DE CRUCEROS: INICIATIVA DE PROMOCIÓN REGIONAL Y DESARROLLO DE MERCADO
El Puerto de Las Palmas es un actor clave en el mercado de cruceros, gracias a su estratégica ubicación y a la cantidad de atracciones turísticas, no solo en la ciudad con su centro histórico, oferta de compras y playas, sino también en toda la extensión de la isla de Gran Canaria - que ha sido denominada “continente en miniatura” por lo verdaderamente variado de su paisaje y de sus microclimas.
Desde 1994, las actividades relativas a los cruceros en Las Palmas se han desarrollado sobre la base de un programa de cooperación que conecta entre sí a todos los puertos de Islas Canarias y del archipiélago portugués de Madeira. De común acuerdo, han establecido una asociación conjunta de comercialización y promoción conocida como Cruises in the Atlantic Islands.
En las dos décadas pasadas esta región ha sido testigo de un crecimiento sostenido en el tráfico de cruceros, ya que se registró una subida más pronunciada justo a finales del siglo pasado y principios del actual.
Como resultado de ese esfuerzo conjunto, la cifra total de pasajeros cruceristas embarcados, desembarcados o en tránsito por los puertos de la provincia oriental de Canarias (bajo jurisdicción de Las Palmas) alcanzó el récord absoluto de más de 530.000 personas en 2009, superando los 210.000 pasajeros tan sólo en el Puerto de Las Palmas.
La temporada de cruceros en las Islas Canarias se extiende desde octubre hasta abril, y la mayor cantidad de pasajeros provienen del Reino Unido, con una participación algo superior a un tercio, y de Alemania (con una participación ligeramente inferior).
La mayoría de los cruceros que llegan a los puertos de las islas pueden clasificarse en tres segmentos:
A) Cruceros circulares con base en Canarias, de frecuencia semanal, principalmente en invierno, con un itinerario por las Islas que abarca también a Madeira y ocasionalmente a puertos marroquíes (Casablanca o Agadir). Los operadores son Thomson Holidays para el mercado angloparlante, y AIDA Cruises para el mercado germano.
CRUISE TRAFFIC: REGIONAL PROMOTION INITIATIVE AND MARKET DEVELOPMENT
The Port of Las Palmas is a key player in the cruise market thanks to its strategic location and the wealth of tourist attractions both in the city, with its historical centre, shopping opportunities and beaches, and across the whole island of Gran Canaria – described as a ‘miniature continent’ because of the sheer variety of its landscape.
Since 1994, cruise activities in Las Palmas have been developed in a co-operation programme linking all the ports of the Canary Islands and the Portuguese Archi-pelago of Madeira. They have set up a common market-ing and promotion association known as Cruises in the Atlantic Islands.
Over the past two decades this region has seen a steady growth in cruise traffic, with a sharper rise starting just at the turn of the century.
As a result of this common effort, the overall number of cruise passengers embarking, disembarking or in transit through the ports of the eastern Canary province (under Las Palmas’ jurisdiction) reached an all-time high of more than 530,000 in 2009 and over 210,000 in the Port of Las Palmas alone.
The cruise season in the Canary Islands runs from October to April and the main source markets are the

En la temporada 2009-2010 esta estructura de mercado llevó a que un total de 161 buques hicieran escala en Las Palmas.
La temporada 2010-2011 se destaca por algunos logros de vital importancia para el puerto, como ser nuevas visitas de buques de prestigio y nuevas operaciones de turnaround [finalización e inicio de un crucero, con desembarque y embarque de pasajeros en el puerto] promovidas por TUI, Royal Caribbean y AIDA, que reforzarán el papel de Las Palmas como puerto base de cruceros.
En este sentido, el puerto tiene un aliado potencialmente valioso en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Gran Canaria, a 24 km de la terminal de cruceros, gracias a sus conexiones directas con muchos de los mercados cruceristas.
TERMINAL CRUCERISTA DE ÚLTIMA GENERACIÓN
Las actividades cruceristas en Las Palmas se concentran en el Muelle Santa Catalina, que posee una terminal con una estación marítima de dos pisos (1.410 m2), equipada con escáneres de equipaje y cuyas operaciones se adhieren a las normas y reglamentaciones ISPS.
Los cruceros disponen de tres atraques:
• Santa Catalina Oeste, que puede alojar a los barcos
de gran calado: longitud 415 m., ancho de 62 m para
operaciones de manipuleo, y 11,0 m de calado.
• Santa Catalina Este, recientemente ampliado a 325 m
de largo y 47 m de ancho, y cuyo calado se aumentó
hasta 10,0 m.
• Santa Catalina Norte, con 200 m. de muelle y 7,0 m
de calado.
EXCELENTE BASE DE SERVICIOS NÁUTICOS PARA REGATAS Las Palmas posee el mayor puerto de embarcaciones deportivas y de recreo de las Islas Canarias, conocido como Muelle Deportivo, con una capacidad de alrededor de 1.150 atraques.

Most of the cruises calling at the islands’ ports can be classified in three segments:

The 2010-2011 season is marked by some key achievements for the port, with new visits by prestigious ships and new turn-round operations promoted by TUI, Royal Caribbean and AIDA that will strengthen the role of Las Palmas as a base port for cruises.
To this end, the port has a potentially valuable ally in Gran Canaria International Airport, 24 km from the cruise termi-nal, which has direct links with many source countries.
STATE-OF-THE-ART CRUISE TERMINAL
Cruise activities in Las Palmas are focused on Muelle Santa Catalina, which features a terminal with a two-storey maritime station (1,410 square metres) equipped with baggage scanners and conforming to ISPS standards and regulations.
Three berths are available for cruise ships:
• Santa Catalina West, which can accommodate the largest vessels: length of 415 metres, width of 62 metres for handling operations and 11.0 metres draught.

La mayor parte de los amarres son de uso público y directamente administrados por la Autoridad Portuaria. Las Palmas dispone de un total de 200 lugares para estancias cortas de embarcaciones en tránsito, principalmente en invierno. Otros 350 amarraderos permanentes son de uso privado del mercado local.
Situado próximo a la bocana del puerto, el Puerto Deportivo cuenta con una estación de gasolina, proveedores navieros, tiendas, talleres, una escuela de vela, un servicio de buceo, un centro de compras y una amplia selección de bares y restaurantes. La Autoridad Portuaria y los servicios policiales y de rescate también tienen aquí sus sedes.
Se dispone de un moderno travelift de 60 toneladas de capacidad, capaz de atender embarcaciones de hasta 20 m de largo, 6 m de ancho y 6 m de calado.
El Muelle Deportivo es una importante base de servicios para los veleros que navegan por el Caribe, sobre todo en los meses de septiembre a febrero. Recibe habitualmente regatas de gran renombre, como el Rally Atlántico de Cruceros (ARC) organizado por el World Cruising Club de Cowes, que en 2010 cumple su XXV edición; esperándose en tal ocasión el pasaje de unos 250 veleros en ruta desde Las Palmas de Gran Canaria a la Bahía de Rodney, Santa Lucía (en el Caribe).
Existe también otra instalación para regatas en una zona aledaña al Puerto de Las Palmas, de menores dimensiones, gestionada por el Real Club Náutico, uno de los club más laureados del mundo en vela olímpica.
• Santa Catalina East, recently extended to 325 metres in length and 47 metres in width and deepened to a draught of 10.0 metres.
• Santa Catalina North, with 200 metres of quay and 7.0 metres draught.
EXCELLENT SUPPORT BASE FOR YACHTING COMPETITIONS
Las Palmas boasts the largest yacht marina in the Canary Islands, the Muelle Deportivo, with a capacity of about 1,150 berths.
Most moorings are for public use and are managed directly by the Port Authority. A total of 200 places are available for transiting boats for short stays in Las Palmas, mainly in winter. A further 350 are private-use perma-nent moorings for the local market.
Located close to the port entrance, the marina has a petrol station, ship chandlers, shops, workshops, a sailing school, a diving service, a shopping centre and a wide choice of bars and restaurants. The Port Authority, police and rescue services also have their own premises here.
A modern boat hoist with a capacity of 60 tonnes is available for boats of up to 20 metres in length, 6 metres beam and 6 metres draught.
The Muelle Deportivo is an important support base for yachts sailing for the Caribbean, mainly from September to February, and it regularly hosts major yachting compe-titions like the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC), organised by the Cowes-based World Cruising Club, which in 2010 reaches its 25th edition, with some 250 yachts expected on the route from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Rodney Bay, St Lucia (Caribbean).
In a nearby area of Las Palmas Port there is a smaller yachting facility established by Real Club Nautico, one of the most famous Olympic sailing clubs in the world.
PUERTO ESFINGE Y BASE PARA PLATAFORMAS PETROLERAS AUTOELEVABLES Puerto Esfinge, la nueva dársena que se está construyendo al Noreste de las actuales instalaciones, es percibida en Las Palmas como un catalizador de vital importancia para su desarrollo en un futuro cercano.
Se calcula que para finales de 2010 se encontrará terminada la Fase 2 del proyecto, que comprende la segunda sección de la principal escollera, 600 m de muelle y 40 ha de rellenado de terrenos, con sus respectivas obras de urbanización (€17 millones).
Para el período de 2011 a 2014, se ha proyectado la realización de inversiones adicionales:
• Escollera principal Fase 3: €23,6 millones
• Muelles interiores, atracaderos y rampas ro-ro: €33,7
millones
• Dársena sur: €12 millones
• Demolición de obras de defensa obsoletas y construcción

ESFINGE HARBOUR AND BASE FOR JACK-UP RIGSEsfinge Harbour, a new port basin under construction north-east of the present facilities, is seen by Las Palmas as a vital catalyst for development in the near future.
By the end of 2010, phase two of the project is expected to be completed. This includes the second section of the main breakwater, 600 metres of quay and 40 hectares of land reclamation with related urbanisation works (€17 million).
Further investments have been planned in 2011-2014:
• Main breakwater phase three: €23.6 million
• Internal quays, ro-ro jetties and ramps: €33.7 million
• Southern breakwater: €12 million
• Demolition of obsolete defence works and construction of a new road system: €4.3 million.
The whole project, due for completion by 2015, will include:
• A breakwater of about 1,400 metres in length.
• An overall quay length of about 1,450 metres with 15.0 metres draught.
• Over 550,000 square metres of operating areas, to be partly transferred to the Gran Canaria Free Zone.

El tráfico de transbordadores se trasladará a la nueva terminal multipropósito, lo que contribuirá a reducir la duración de los viajes cuando menos en media hora.
Otro proyecto importante en curso previsto para 2011 es una nueva base de mantenimiento y reparación de plataformas petroleras autoelevables, que se ubicará en la sección norte del Dique Reina Sofía, frente al Astillero Astican, y que se estima fortalecerá la importancia de las reparaciones navales en Las Palmas.
GESTIÓN Y COMPETITIVIDAD
En lo que refiere a la gestión y organización del puerto, las perspectivas son prometedoras. La nueva ley española de Puertos, vigente desde agosto de 2010, seguramente aportará más eficiencia a las actividades portuarias, a la vez de contemplar reducciones de las tasas portuarias a pagar por las empresas que alcancen un objetivo prefijado de volumen de tráfico.
Esfinge Harbour will be subdivided into four operational sectors:
• Multipurpose terminal with seven ro-ro ramps and 250,000 square metres of surface: for ro-ro and passenger traffic, bulk handling, logistics and shiprepair.
• A new container terminal, possibly complemented by areas for conventional general cargo and/or for shiprepair, on a total area of 200,000 square metres.
• A 50,000 square metre area for services and logistics activities and a 52,000 square metre zone for industrial uses and liquid bulk storage immediately behind the multipurpose terminal.
In particular, ferry traffic will be moved to the new multi-purpose terminal. This will reduce sailing times by at least half an hour.
Another major project under way is a new base for main-tenance and repair of jack-up rigs, which will be sited in the northern section of Dique Reina Sofía, in front of the Astican Shipyard, by 2011 and should enhance the role of shiprepair in Las Palmas.
MANAGEMENT AND COMPETITIVENESS
When it comes to port management and organisation, the outlook is bright. The new Spanish Port Law, in force since August 2010, should bring more efficiency to port

Por otra parte, el nuevo convenio entre la Autoridad Portuaria, los operadores y los trabajadores portuarios sobre la flexibilidad en las horas de trabajo y los salarios, seguramente contribuirá a impulsar la productividad y a satisfacer el incremento que, de acuerdo a los pronósticos, experimentará la demanda de servicios portuarios.
Estos factores contribuirían asimismo al incremento en las llegadas de buques y por ende, al aumento de los ingresos del puerto.
En último término, es importante destacar el papel desempeñado por el Cluster Marítimo de Canarias, constituido en 2008 e integrado por sociedades civiles, empresas, dependencias gubernamentales y entidades relacionadas con el transporte marítimo, la construcción y las reparaciones navales. Su cometido es el de elevar la competitividad del puerto fomentando la innovación tecnológica y organizacional y una cooperación más estrecha entre todos los interesados, permitiendo de esa forma poder ofrecer a los usuarios del puerto un paquete completo de servicios.
activities as well as allowing a reduction in port dues for companies that can achieve a set target in terms of traffic volumes.
Moreover, a new agreement between the Port Authority, operators and port workers on flexibility of working hours and wages is likely to boost productivity and help meet the forecast upsurge in the demand for port services.
These factors should also help to attract more ship calls, thus helping to boost port revenue.
Finally, it is important to underline the role of the Canary Maritime Cluster, established in 2008 and consisting of associations, enterprises, government agencies and entities involved in maritime transport, construction and naval repairs. Its task is to enhance port competitiveness by fostering technological and organisational innovation and a closer co-operation between all the stakeholders, so as to offer port users a complete package of services.

Ya desde antaño la Bahía de La Isleta, en la costa noreste de Gran Canaria, había sido utilizada por las naves fenicias y romanas como un fondeadero seguro, pero no fue hasta 1478, año de la fundación de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, que comenzaron a desarrollarse en este puerto actividades portuarias propiamente dichas.
Tan pronto España extendió su poder a las Islas Canarias, Las Palmas se convirtió en la principal base de servicios náuticos para las expediciones marítimas transoceánicas. El ilustre navegante Cristóbal Colón mismo la eligió para reparar sus naves y como su última parada en Europa antes de proseguir su travesía hacia el Nuevo Mundo.
En el siglo XVI, cuando el comercio del azúcar era el principal componente de la economía del puerto, Las Palmas soportó ataques de piratas, batallas navales y aún saqueos, a consecuencia de la econada rivalidad existente entre España y otras potencias marítimas de la época, como Francia, Inglaterra y Holanda.
Durante los dos siglos siguientes, Las Palmas atravesó un período de decadencia. Sus actividades habían quedado confinadas principalmente a la pesca y a la exportación de vinos, en tanto que otros puertos de las Islas Canarias iban adquiriendo mayor relevancia como puertos de escala para los buques en ruta a las Américas.
La recuperación comenzó a darse en 1811, con el inicio de las obras de construcción en el Muelle de San Telmo, que no obstante, experimentaron una pléyade de problemas políticos, económicos y técnicos.
PROYECTO DECISIVO: Puerto de Refugio de La Luz
El verdadero punto de inflexión se puede ubicar en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX (1881 a 1883), cuando un nuevo proyecto de instalaciones portuarias, que había quedado estancado en la mesa de dibujo desde 1856 a 1857, fue finalmente aprobado y llevado a cabo en forma gradual, gracias a la iniciativa y visión del influyente político local Fernando León y Castillo.
Con el establecimiento de este nuevo complejo, el Puerto de Refugio de la Luz, puerto natural de La Isleta, se convirtió en un verdadero puerto, protegido por sólidas dársenas y equipado con modernos muelles. Este proyecto constituyó la avanzada de una fase de rápido desarrollo urbano y económico, allanando el camino para

As soon as Spain extended its rule over the Canary Islands, Las Palmas became the main support base for maritime expeditions across the oceans. The famous navigator, Christopher Columbus, used the islands as a base for shiprepairs and as his last stop in Europe before sailing to the New World.
In the 16th century, when the sugar trade was upper-most in the port economy, Las Palmas suffered pirate attacks, naval battles and even pillages as a result of the fierce rivalry between Spain and other maritime powers such as France, England and Holland.
The next two centuries saw a period of decline for Las Palmas. Its activities were confined mainly to fishing and the export of wine, while other ports in the Canary Islands became more significant as ports of call for ships en route to the Americas.
The recovery started in 1811, with the start of construc-tion work on San Telmo Pier, which nevertheless was beset by political, economical and technical problems.
DECISIVE PROJECT: Puerto de Refugio de La Luz
The real turning point came in the last decades of the 19th century (1881-83), when a new project for port facilities, on the drawing board since 1856-57, was finally approved and gradually carried out, thanks to the initiative and vision of Fernando León y Castillo, an influential local politician.
With the establishment of this new complex, Puerto de Refugio de la Luz, the natural harbour of La Isleta became a real port, protected by strong breakwaters and equipped with modern piers. This scheme heralded a phase of rapid urban and economic development, paving the way for the future growth of a vibrant cosmopolitan city and a world-class commercial port.
One of the first signs of this new era was massive foreign investment, particularly from Great Britain, in trade and tourism. In addition, at the turn of the century, Las

Palmas became the gateway to the Americas for immi-grants from Europe as well as a key part of the interna-tional network of coaling stations.
Meanwhile, the area between the port quays and the hills of la Isleta became the site of a new urban quarter, mainly for port workers and their families.
PORT EXTENSION AND TRAFFIC DEVELOPMENT
In the first half of the 20th century the key project was the construction of a new longer breakwater, completed in 1935, which served – decades later – as support for the reclamation of the largest pier, Muelle León y Castillo, of today’s port.
After the Second World War, in which Spain was not involved, the growth in traffic accelerated the pace of port development. Subsequent planning schemes, starting in 1947, led to a process of port expansion in which new water basins were created by building alignments of defence works in parallel to existing ones, in the direction of the open sea, while new quayside and operating areas were acquired by restruc-turing or widening marine works created in previous phases. Of particular importance was the construction, between 1966 and 1979, of the impressive Reina Sofía Dock.
At the same time, there was a further growth in key port activities such as deepsea fishing, bunkering and shiprepair. In more recent times a new commercial, tourist and leisure district has sprung up next to the port area.
During the 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century the port capabilities of Las Palmas have been strength-ened by new modern terminals for containers and cruise traffic as well as by new industrial and logistics facilities and zones with a privileged tax regime.
The present and future of the Port Las Palmas have been described and outlined in the previous chapters of this handbook. Of particular importance is the huge poten-tial represented by the new Esfinge Quay, now under construction, and its likely role in the future growth of African economies.

AMPLIACIÓN DEL PUERTO Y DESARROLLO DEL TRÁFICO
En la primera mitad del siglo XX, el proyecto clave fue la construcción de una nueva dársena de mayor longitud, que se terminó en 1935 y que sirvió — varias décadas después— de apoyo para ganarle tierras al mar en el muelle de mayor dimensión, el Muelle León y Castillo, del actual puerto.
Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en la que España no se involucró, el aumento del tráfico aceleró el ritmo del desarrollo portuario. Varios planes posteriores, a partir de 1947, llevaron a un proceso de expansión portuaria. Así, se crearon nuevas dársenas construyendo obras de defensa paralelas a las existentes, en dirección al mar abierto, en tanto que se adquirían nuevas superficies de muelles y operativas mediante la reestructura o el ensanche de obras marítimas creadas en fases precedentes. De especial importancia fue la construcción, de 1966 a 1979, de la impresionante escollera del dique Reina Sofía.
Al mismo tiempo, se producía un crecimiento adicional en actividades portuarias claves, como por ejemplo la pesca de gran altura, el abastecimiento de combustible y las reparaciones navales. En tiempos más recientes, se ha desarrollado próximo a la zona portuaria, un nuevo distrito comercial, turístico y de recreo.
Durante la década de 1990 y la primera del siglo XXI, las posibilidades de Las Palmas se han visto fortalecidas por las nuevas y modernas terminales de contenedores y por el tráfico crucerista, así como por los nuevos servicios industriales y logísticos y zonas con un régimen fiscal privilegiado.
El presente y el futuro del Puerto Las Palmas han sido descritos a grandes rasgos en los capítulos anteriores del presente manual. De especial importancia es el enorme potencial que representa el nuevo Muelle de la Esfinge, actualmente en construcción, y su probable papel en el futuro crecimiento de las economías africanas.
AEROPUERTOEl Aeropuerto de Gran Canaria, con conexiones internacionales, está situado a 24 km del Puerto de Las Palmas.

PUERTOS MENORES DE GRAN CANARIA
Salineta y Arinaga son dos puertos menores de Gran Canaria, bajo jurisdicción de la Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas.
El Puerto de Salinetas, en la costa Este de la isla, unos kilómetros al norte del aeropuerto internacional, dispone de un solo embarcadero. El puerto tiene 24.000 m2 de superficie operativa y un movimiento anual de 1 a 1,2 millones de toneladas de combustible, alcohol y otros graneles secos y líquidos para el mercado interno de Gran Canaria.
El Puerto de Arinaga, en la costa sureste, al sur del aeropuerto, fue construido para prestar servicios de transporte a la zona industrial de Arinaga. Esta zona, planificada como una de los mayores polígonos industriales de España, también contiene una Zona Franca con 250.000 m2 ya disponibles, con planes de expandirla en 200.000 m2 adicionales.
Se ha diseñado un proyecto a gran escala destinado a transformarlo en una instalación capaz de complementar las funciones portuarias de Las Palmas.
Se ha previsto que Arinaga reciba una significativa porción del tráfico de graneles secos y líquidos que actualmente se maneja en Las Palmas. También se ha proyectado una instalación para almacenaje de combustibles.
LOS PUERTOS DE LANZAROTE Y FUERTEVENTURA
Los mayores puertos de las islas de Lanzarote (Puerto de Arrecife) y Fuerteventura (Puerto del Rosario), también dependen de la jurisdicción de la Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas.
PUERTO DE ARRECIFE
El Puerto de Arrecife, sobre la costa este de Lanzarote, ocupa el tercer lugar en las Islas Canarias en lo que refiere al tráfico de carga. La longitud de la línea de atraque es de 2.877 m., con un calado máximo de 14,0 m, una superficie acuática de 120 ha y una superficie terrestre de 450.000 m2.
MINOR PORTS IN GRAN CANARIA
Salinetas and Arinaga are two minor ports of Gran Canaria under the jurisdiction of Las Palmas Port Authority.
The Port of Salinetas, on the east coast of the island, a few kilometres north of the international airport, is equipped with a single jetty. The port has 24,000 square metres of operating areas and an annual throughput of 1 million to 1.2 million tonnes of fuel, alcohol and other dry and liquid bulks for the internal market of Gran Canaria.
The Port of Arinaga, on the south-east coast, south of the airport, was built to provide transport facilities for Arinaga’s industrial area. Planned as one of Spain’s largest industrial estates, this area also contains a Free Trade Zone with 250,000 square metres already avail-able and plans to extend the zone by a further 200,000 square metres.

El puerto tiene una terminal de contenedores con una longitud de muelle de 375 m. (calados de 9,0 a 10,0 m) y un área de maniobras de casi 30.000 m2, con dos grúas buque-tierra y siete grúas de playa. La terminal puede manejar aproximadamente 60.000 TEUs anuales. También ubicado aquí hay un silo para cemento.
Se dispone de cuatro rampas fijas para ro-ro y conexiones por transbordador con otras islas y con España continental. Esto ha llevado a un creciente aumento en el número de pasajeros (66.000 en 2009).
El tráfico del puerto casi se duplicó en el período de 1995 a 2007, alcanzando el valor récord de 1.693.000 toneladas, debido al crecimiento económico de Lanzarote, principalmente impulsado por el turismo.
El negocio crucerista es otro sector de solidez: en su posición como el puerto crucerista más activo, Arrecife recibió 183 escalas y casi 265.000 pasajeros cruceristas en 2009, con una tendencia positiva continua. A consecuencia de obras de modernización, los cruceros cuentan con un muelle lineal para maniobras de 840 m, calado máximo de 14,0 m y ancho de 20 m, a lo largo de la superficie interior de la escollera principal (Muelle de los Mármoles).
Dentro del Plan de Inversiones 2010-2014 de la Autoridad Portuaria, los proyectos claves en el Puerto de Arrecife comprenden la ampliación en longitud del Muelle de los Mármoles (€17,0 millones) y la construcción de una nueva terminal de cruceros mediante obras de relleno a gran escala para ganar terrenos al mar, comenzando desde la sección norte de la escollera Naos, al oeste de las instalaciones actuales.
La Fase 1 (€16,6 millones) consistirá de un nuevo muelle de 315 m. Después de que el proyecto quede terminado, el puerto tendrá la capacidad de recibir hasta ocho buques de crucero simultáneamente.
A large-scale project has been drawn up to turn the port into a facility able to complement the port functions of Las Palmas.
Arinaga is set to receive a significant share of the dry and liquid bulk traffic currently handled in Las Palmas. The establishment of a tank farm has also been planned.
PORTS IN LANZAROTE AND FUERTEVENTURA
The largest ports of the islands of Lanzarote (Puerto de Arrecife) and Fuerteventura (Puerto del Rosario) also come under the jurisdiction of Las Palmas Port Authority.
PUERTO DE ARRECIFE
Puerto de Arrecife, on the east coast of Lanzarote, ranks third in the Canary Islands for cargo shipments and first for coastal fishing. Overall quay length is 2,877 metres, with a maximum draught of 14.0 metres, a water area of 120 hectares and a land area of 450,000 square metres.
The port has a container terminal with a quay length of 375 metres (draughts of 9.0 to 10.0 metres) and a handling area of nearly 30,000 square metres, with two ship-to-shore cranes and seven yard cranes. The terminal can handle about 60,000 teu per year. A cement silo is also sited here.
Four fixed ramps are available for ro-ro and ferry links with other islands and with mainland Spain. This has led to a growing number of passengers (66,000 in 2009).
The port’s traffic almost doubled from 1995 to 2007, when it reached an all-time high of 1,693,000 tonnes owing to the economic growth of Lanzarote, mainly on the back of tourism.

La Autoridad Portuaria ha decidido además adjudicar una concesión para la construcción y operación de un puerto deportivo para yates en el Puerto de Naos.
PUERTO DEL ROSARIO
El Puerto del Rosario, en la costa este de Fuerteventura, ha experimentado un rápido crecimiento – al igual que el Puerto de Arrecife – a consecuencia del desarrollo económico de la isla, que superó 1,5 millones de toneladas por primera vez en 2007.
El tráfico de contenedores y las escalas de cruceros constituyen los principales sectores de tráfico en este puerto, que cuenta con 1.005 m. de muelle, con calado máximo de 12,0 m, y 205.000 m2 de superficie terrestre.
El Puerto del Rosario tiene una terminal de contenedores, recientemente ampliada, con 340 m de muelle (7,0 a 12,0 m de calado), una superficie de playa superior a los 30.000 m2, una grúa pórtico buque-tierra y un movimiento en los últimos años de 25.000 a 45.000 teu. Además de instalaciones para el manejo de cargas, cuenta con dos silos para cemento. Se ha habilitado recientemente un Punto de Inspección Fronteriza (PIF) aprobado por la EU.
Se dispone de dos rampas fijas y una estación marítima para la atención del tráfico ro-ro y de transbordadores con otras islas del archipiélago. Más de 9.000 pasajeros utilizaron estos servicios regulares en 2009.
Más significativo es el tráfico crucerista del puerto, que registró 34 escalas y 56.000 pasajeros en 2009. El puerto cuenta con un muelle para cruceros recientemente construido, de 305 m de largo y 10,0 m de calado.
El más importante proyecto en curso es la construcción de un puerto deportivo para yates en el lado oeste del muelle de cruceros, el que también se ampliará en 100 m.

Under the Port Authority’s Investment Plan for 2010-2014, key projects at Puerto de Arrecife include further length-ening of the Muelle de los Mármoles (€17.0 million) and construction of a new cruise terminal through large-scale reclamation works, starting from the northern section of the Naos breakwater, west of the existing facilities.
Phase 1 (€16.6 million) will consist of a new 315 metre quay. On completion of the whole project, the port will be able to receive up to eight cruise ships at a time.

Container traffic and cruise ship calls are the main traffic sectors for this port, which has 1,005 metres of quays, with a maximum draught of 12.0 metres, and 205,000 square metres of land surface.
Puerto del Rosario has a container terminal, recently extended, with 340 metres of quay (7.0 to 12.0 metres draught), a yard area of over 30,000 square metres, one ship-to-shore gantry crane and a throughput of between 25,000 and 45,000 teu over the past few years. In addi-tion to cargo handling facilities there are two cement silos. An EU-approved Border Inspection Point (PIF) has been set up recently.
There are two fixed ramps and a maritime station to serve ro-ro and ferry traffic with other islands of the archipelago. Over 9,000 passengers used these regular services in 2009.
More significant is the port’s cruise traffic, with 34 calls and 56,000 passengers in 2009. The port has a newly built cruise pier with a length of 305 metres and 10.0 metres draught.

En 2009 el complejo de puertos dependientes de la Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas (Las Palmas, Salinetas, Arinaga, Puerto de Arrecife y Puerto del Rosario) recibió 8.797 escalas de buques mercantes y 1.007 de buques pesqueros, resultando en un movimiento de 19,4 millones de toneladas de mercaderías manejadas.
Desglosando estas cifras en grandes categorías, este tráfico está compuesto por 4,2 millones de toneladas de graneles líquidos, casi 0,7 millones de graneles secos, aproximadamente 12,6 millones de carga general (incluyendo contenedores y tráfico ro-ro), y apenas algo menos de 2 millones de toneladas de búnkers y otros abastecimientos para buques.

Broken down into main categories, this traffic consists of 4.2 million tonnes of liquid bulks, nearly 0.7 million of dry bulks, about 12.6 million of general cargo (includ-ing containers and ro-ro traffic) and just under 2 million tonnes of bunkers and other provisions for ships.

Los valores correspondientes al tráfico de pasajeros revelan un panorama bastante distinto: en 2009 se experimentó una tendencia a la suba en comparación con años anteriores, tanto para el sector de transbordadores como para el sector crucerista, con un movimiento total superior a1,25 millones de personas.
El fortalecimiento de la denominada Autopista Marítima de Canarias, así como la utilización de buques nuevos con una mayor frecuencia de servicio, ha engrosado el volumen de pasajeros de transbordadores a 723.545, en tanto que el número de pasajeros cruceristas alcanzó una cifra récord superior a los 530.000. En consecuencia, las perspectivas de crecimiento a corto plazo lucen prometedoras.
REPUNTE EN 2010
En general, durante 2010 se aprecia un importante repunte. Desde la mitad de este ejercicio el Tráfico Total se incrementa más de un 7%, entre los que destaca el tráfico de contenedores, que crece más de un 15% y el de pasajeros (13%).

These performances were heavily affected by the global economic downturn, which has reduced traffic volumes since 2008. In the years ahead, a recovery is expected that could push up port traffic close to the record level of 2007 (26.7 million tonnes).
Graphs on these pages outline the main aspects of traffic structure and trends in the complex of five ports under Las Palmas Authority, while two 3D maps show the distribution by berth of overall throughput and general cargo handling (inclusive of containers) in the Port of Las Palmas proper.
Figures for passenger traffic reveal quite a different picture: 2009 saw an upward trend compared with previ-ous years in both the ferry and the cruise sectors, with a total movement of over 1.25 million people.
The strengthening of the so-called Canary Motorway of the Sea, also making use of brand-new vessels with a higher frequency of service, has boosted the number of ferry passengers to 723,545, while the number of cruise passenger reached an all-time high of more than 530,000. So the outlook is bright for short-term growth.
Recovery in 2010
In general, there has been a significant recovery in 2010 with total trade up by more than seven per cent since the middle of the year. In particular, container movements have increased by over 15 per cent and passenger move-ments by 13 per cent.
