The Christmas Eve and Christ-mas Day second collection will benefit Catholic Charities Atlanta, a 65-year legacy in Georgia of charity for our most needy broth-ers and sisters and a mission inspired by our Catholic faith.

Many of the clients are members of the working poor who work sev-eral jobs and long hours to support their families. Many of these indi-viduals are also facing a life crisis, are alone and frightened. Catholic Charities Atlanta staff help to identify their problems and provide them with the resources to put them on the path to independence.

The “O Antiphons” refer to the seven antiphons that are chanted or recited preceding the Magnificat during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. They cover the special period of Advent preparation known as the Octave before Christmas, December 17 — 23, with December 24 being Christmas Eve and Vespers for that evening being for the Vigil for the Solemnity of Christmas. The importance of “O Antiphons” is twofold because each one highlights a title for the Messiah and each one also refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah.

Novena of Posadas Posadas are an important part of Latin-American Christmas celebrations. Posadas are also becoming popular in the United States. The word posada means "inn" or "shelter" in Spanish, and this tradition re-enacts Mary and Joseph's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Posadas are held on each of the nine nights leading up to Christmas, from December 16 to 24. The celebration begins with a procession in which the participants hold candles and sing Christmas carols. Sometimes there will be Individuals playing the parts of Mary and Joseph who lead the way, or occasionally images representing them are carried. The procession will make its way to a particular home (a different one each night), where a special song (LThe Song Asking for Room in the Inn) is sung. Below are the Hosts for the Posadas this year. John baptized with water —The Messiah will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire Third Sunday of Advent Week of December 16, 2018 Listen to the Word (Luke 3:10 – 18) What words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Look into your life Question for children: Why is it so important to keep promises which you have made? Question for youth: What do you remember from stories about your Baptism? What does your Baptism mean to you now? Question for adults: How can you live the promise of your Bap-tism each day? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: We are called to live the promise of our Baptism each day and be signs of Jesus’ presence in the world. Ask each family member to tell how he or she can be a sign of Jesus to others. Together, decide on a family project for this week, such as preparing a meal for a family that has experienced hardship or is new in the community. For your family prayer one day this week, place a bowl of water in a central location in your home. Have family members come to the water and bless themselves in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As they do this, remind them of their Baptismal promise to be examples of God’s love in the world. Conclude with the Lord’s Prayer. This is the Third Sunday of Advent, a day to rejoice. Do a fun activity with the family, such as making cookies, or driving together to see the holiday lights. Light three candles (two purple and one pink) on the Advent wreath. Have each family member offer a prayer of thanks for someone who has shown the presence of Christ by his or her love, patience, or forgiveness. Conclude by praying the Lord’s Prayer together.
