    Kuta Weekly News Corner27 Dec - 2 jan 2016 (316)

Gday again folks and I hope you all had a great Christmas. As with themost of us its all about eating, drinking and enjoying a well earnedbreak for the years end, unfortunaltely the bills keep rolling in and thewolves are always, not so far from the door, so its back to work unt il theNew Years break. This would have to be one of my favorite times of theyear as you get to usher in the new year with a huge party and make aNew Years resolutiuon. Some people seem to make great bigpromises to themselves for the New Year, which inadvertently turns tomud, leaving the wisher with a feeling of disappointment and generally

not making a change at all. I think the best way to go with your New Years resolution is to make it an easyone. Ill be pledging to only drink green bottles six days a week from now on and probably try to not start until4pm each day, which should leave me with a big satisfied feeling as its about the norm anyways, give or takea few days. Just remmember the kiss method keep it simple silly .

There are heaps of places in and around Kuta having a New Years Eve bash this year. They have arather large event sorted at Bamboo Bar and grill, who I might add just took out an award for the bestvalue resturant in Kuta for 2012 and based on their first year in operation, Id say you will be seeing them for along time yet. You can check out their New Years Eve advert on page 23. The Bounty Hotel, as usual, ishaving a huge shin dig with their newly renovated party area near the pool. The resturant, stage and eventhe pool have had a massive makeover and have been tricked out well. They usually have a screamer of aparty, not for the faint hearted. Good music, good food, and all the cocktails and drinks you can poke a stickat, all for the one entry price. Check out their adver t on page 8, and cheers for the support Mr Sven.

Now, I guess this New Years I've saved my favorite till last and that's the New Years Eve bash thatMoo Moos Bar and Grill have got planned for everyone. Im not just saying that because one of thepapers staff members, forgot to put two pictures in the Moo Moos advert last week and the powers that beare complaining and looking for a reduced cost for the full centre page spread that caused so much attentiondue to the missing pictures. We gave them an extra two pictures this week to help balance the scales, however next week we might put the advert in upside down and see what response that gets from themanagement (only joking Mr Richard), although I am serious when I say it is my first choice for the 2013count down in Bali. They have decked the place out in a kind of white Christmas theme which will followthrough to the New Years Eve party. They have specials on about everything in the place and the staff andthe dedicated hostess's along with the boss know how to keep everyone happy and comfortable for a party.Id be getting in quick as the tables are sure to fill fast being that its really setup for the whole family or largegroups to enjoy. I like the five dollar imported Aussie steaks. Thanks again for your support guys and lets seeif you can get your artwork in before the dead line each week instead of 5 hours late as seems to be thenorm. Maybe that can be your New Years resolution ?? Like I said an easy one. Please check out thecentre page spread Moo Moo's takes each week and get on down for a few with a group.

Ok, before I sign out this year I want to offer my condolences to the family and friends of a true Balicharacter that was lost this week, mostly known at the Kuta Weekly as Sir Les, the man was a truegentleman, even though he backed the Eagles and hated my beloved Pies, he was always onto us for thepaper each week and commeneted on almost every improvement we made to the pages that you read eachweek. If it was a matter of opinion, then he was Aliasj's biggest fan. I hope you rest in peace old mate. Yourpositive feedback and conjecture will be sorely missed over a few quiet ones late at night.

Ok folks I guess thats the last thing Ill say this year, or the last thing youll read from me as its aboutthat time again. I truly hope the most of you have had a great year, whether itbe on the island or elsewhere. I hope the year ahead is a great one for all ourfamilys, friends and readers. I hope all our sponsors do especially well thisyear and hang in with us for many years to come. We cant do the paperwithout their suppor t. So, as I say every week I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remmember Don't sweat the small stuff, Lifes toshort

    Enjoy Your Week,ALIASJ.

ps: the world didn't end in 2012 you idiots.

    No Parking on the Paddocks

Tanah Ampo ResidentsRefuse Regency Plans toBuild Parking Facility onFarm Land for East BaliCruise Terminal

The Bali Post reports thatresidents at Tanah Ampo on theeaste rn coast o f Ba l i a tKarangasem are refusing to

surrender their farming lands topermit the construction of parkingfacilit ies for the Tanah Ampo

In te rna t iona l Cru iseTerminal.

L o c a l f a r m e r s a r econcerned that they will beseparated from ancestralfarming lands in order toaccommodate a parking lot for acruise terminal that, in the end, will not be favoured by the cruiseindustry.

The farmer's refusal tosurrender their lands wasconfirmed by Tanah Ampovillage chief, I Gede Suyadnya, who confirmed his efforts over

separate three meetings topersuade local farmers to selltheir lands to the port project havebeen unsuccessful.

Suyadnya explained thatthe refusal was in part promptedby the inability of Karangasemauthorities to actually put thecruise terminal into operation.Past efforts to lure internationalcruise ships to the port have hadvery mixed results due to poor

the pontoon erected toreceive ships' tenders at a portthat offers no protection to theopen seas.

Moreover, local citizenspoint out that in recent months noships have come to the port, preferring instead to berth at thesouthern port of Benoa that is ableto bring large ships alongside apier in a protected harbor.

The lack of business for thepor t has a lso made theKarangasem regency's offer of a70% - 30% split in parking feesbetween the village and theregional government less thancompelling.

The lack of promisingreturns from the proposed parkingfacility and the desire to preservetheir agricultural lands haveunited the villagers in rejecting theplan put forth by the regency forthe proposed parking lot.

Seeking a Share of the VOA ActionB a l i R e n e w sEfforts to Snag aShare of Visa FeesPaid by ForeignVisitors

    O n c e a g a i n amovement has beenlaunched in Bali to securea share of the visa-on-arrival fees (VOA) paid by

visiting tourists to Bali that is nowentirely remitted to Jakarta. As reported by Radar Bali,

the chairman of Commission IV ofthe Bali House of Representatives(DPRD Bali), Nyoman Parta, confirmed that he would soonoutline steps that should be takenfor Bali to get a fair share of theserevenues.

Parta is calling for theestablishment of a Special

    Commission in 2013 to

    examine the distribution of VOArevenues.

He claims the struggle toobtain a share of VOA fees paid byforeign visitors is realistic.

    N y o m a n P a r t a h a sestimated the total VOA feescollected at Bali's airport totalsRp. 6.5 trillion (US$670 million).

    Bad Math?The legislator's calculations

i n a c c u r a t ebased on the mistakenassumption that 2.5million foreign touristspay Rp. 250,000 eachfor VOA. Parta 'scalculation are flawedin that the cost of theVOA is closer to Rp.242,0000 (US$25)and fails to consider

that visitors f rom ASEANcountries do not pay the VOA fee.

    Parta insists that, whateverthe actual total collected, Balineeds a share of the tax feescollected for VOA in order tom a i n t a i n t h e i s l a n d ' sinfrastructure and improve thestate of the Balinese touristattractions.

Russians pay $1,000 for doomsday party in Soviet bunkerA Cold War-era bunkerdesigned to save Sovietleaders from a nuclear attackwill hosted a 24-hour partyfor Russians willing to pay$1,000 for a ticket to escapethe apocalypse, which,

according to New Ageprophesies, was last Friday.

Bunker No. 42, now atourist attraction full of red alarmlights, is located 56 meters (184feet) underground in central

Moscow, near the Kremlin, and can accommodate up to 300people.

"Many people would feelmuch calmer if they could spendthis cri t ical day enjoyingmaximum comfort and safety,"

said Alexei Pavlovsky, a tourguide at the bunker, adding therewas strong interest in the partywhich was started at midnight onDecember 20.

    Pavlovsky said the idea of

holding a party at thebunker, which has served as amuseum since 2006, came fromvisitors keen to mark the end ofan era in the Maya Long Countcalendar which came out atsunrise on December 21 - an

event interpreted by somegroups as the end of days."We don't have control

over things such as the end ofthe world. But we are ready forpretty much everything," he said.

    "There'll be a children'sroom with cartoons, for adultsthere' l l be movies, talksdedicated to the end of the worldand tours of the museum.There'll be live broadcasts fromo t h e r b u n k e r s i n o t h e rcountries."

Upon entering the bunker, built in 1956, visitors will bewhisked 18 floors down in anelevator to a warren of roomswhere loudspeakers blast outthe old Cold war warning:"Attention! Attention! The enemyhas carried out a nuclear attack!"

"The bunker is rather big,but everything here is arrangedin a way that makes people feelsafe. This is a comfortable, cozyplace to spend not just a day, buta whole war and even the end ofthe world," said Anna, a studentvisiting the bunker after theevent.

Other resorts across theworld are offering refuge for

Diving in BaliWant to plunge into the deep blue and get your mind

blown by Bali's underwater wildlife? Head right this way.Bali's dive sites offer great diversity: vertical walls and sandslopes, shipwrecks, limestone shorelines and black, volcanic outcrops, peaceful bays and ripping currents, coral-covered ridges, with both shore- and boat-diving. Expect tosee mantas, whale sharks and, from July through October, oceanic sunfish.Diving safaris are becoming the package of choice for thosewho want to see more of underwater Bali. These arebasically hotel/diving and transport packages. Becauseyou're staying near the dive sites, youcan do earlier and later dives andavoid the day-tripping crowds from thetourist areas that pack out popularsites. It also allows you to do moredives each day. Snorkelling isavailable at Tulamben, Amed, PadangBai and Pemuteran/Menjangan, sonon-diving partners and children canoften join day trips and safaris. Hereare Bali's 10 best:1. USAT Liberty

The Liberty shipwreck isconsidered Bali's most popular divesite. The American ship USAT Liberty

was an armed cargo steamship thatwas torpedoed by the Japanese in1942. The years under the sea havetransformed it to one of Indonesia's most beautiful artificialreefs. Stunning gorgonian sea fans, huge soft coral treesand big-barrel sponges all flourish here. A resident school ofbig-eyed jacks live on and around the ship and are unafraidof divers, so it's safe to enter the school and have them whirlaround you. The ship is also a haven for emperors, batfish, sweetlips and parrotfish.2. Tulamben drop-off

On the northeast coast, Tulamben Bay receivesvery plankton-rich waters and, coupled with the fact that thethree main dive sites provide totally different physicalenvironments, the bay is a stunning and diverse underwaterecosystem. The black sand in the area brings out the coloursof the corals, gorgonians, fish and other marine life. At thesouth end of the bay, a rocky point falls off sharplyunderwater to create a deep drop-off where sharks, whalesharks and sunfish have been found.

    3. AmedAmed lies to the south, along the eastern coastline.

It was traditionally dependent on salt-panning and fishing, and despite the arrival of tourists it's retained that feeling. There are three main dive sites here; head south to theshipwreck at Lipah fishing village, or a bit further south to thedrift dive at Gili Selang, Bali's easternmost point.4. Lipah shipwreck

This village is tiny and so is the wreck, which can befound at the inner bay drop-off at the north end of Lipah Bay.Divers can take a boat down the coast, or just drive along thewinding coast and walk in. It's full of copper sweepers, abatfish school, hard coral growth and waving sea fans, andcan be both dived or snorkelled. Go with a good guide, as the

currents can come up fast and strong.5. Gili Tepekong

This big volcanic hump rises out of the water not farfrom the Candi Dasa shore on the south-east coast.Underwater, the area is covered with Medusa-like heads thatvary in size from huge boulders to small sea gardens. Theyare adorned with blood-red sea fans, tunicates and sponges. In some spots, the competition for space amid the corals isincredible. Other sites include Gili Mimpang and Gili Biaha.Currents are common in this area, but that means pelagic lifelike big tuna, jacks, sharks and even mola mola come in here.6. Blue Lagoon

The shallow reefs of BlueLagoon, near Padang Bai, are used forintroductory dives, night dives and longphoto excursions. Staghorn coral patchreefs start in only 3m of water. The reefthen opens out onto an area with hugecoral bommies, soft leather corals andflowing anemones. The area here canbe good for macro buffs; there arerumours of a lacey scorpionfish beingseen here as well.7. Napoleon Reef

Named for a large Napoleonwrasse seen here, Napoleon Reef is inthe north near Pemuteran. It can be

dived deep or shallow, day or night. Onthe northeast end is the Ikan Warungfish house, bustling with various

schools. Golden sea fans and large clumps of cotton-candycoral grow beside other gorgonians along the slope.8. Menjangen Island

The drop-offs at Menjangan Island can be a realtreat. This is the site of a now abandoned gua rd post that hasa broad channel leading to the beach. Expect to be greetedby batfish. The dive offers spectacular corals and many deepcrevices and fissures, as well as small caves. Sleepinggroupers and wary big-eyed jacks are found in the darkrecesses.9. Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay, on Nusa Penida, is protected andrelatively shallow, offering enjoyable conditions for divers ofall levels. The bay has two entrances and a large rock sits inthe centre. Be careful when diving this central rock, or alongthe outside edge of the bay, as the current can be strong, sweeping divers out along the outside wall into very tricky

diving conditions. When near the drop-off, look for largercreatures, such as molas, eagle rays, dogtooth tuna, sharksand an occasional bumphead wrasse. Schooling surgeonfishare abundant in some spots.10. Manta Point

Lucky divers may have a close encounter with themanta rays that are known to traverse this dive site. One ofthe mantas is pure white, a truly unearthly creature. MantaPoint is located along the high and rugged cliffs of NusaPenida, so it's not always easy to get there due to the bigswells that sometimes hit, but it's worth it to experience thesegentle, graceful creatures.

Hi Martha,It is with great sadness in my heartthat I write to tell you of the passingof yet another Bali legend, Sir Les.

Les was well known to many from hismany drinking holes around kuta;Seabreeze, Y bar, The Pub and oflate, the Croc an Cracs to name afew. RIP SIR LES.Now how many of us expats (&tourists) in Bali have things in order if something like this was tohappen to us? To me it was a big wake up call, and don't expecttoo much help from the Australian consulate here, apart fromcontacting your family. I have known quite a few people here inBali from Australia who have passed on to pastures greenerwithout having things in order. And believe me Sunday was anightmare! However Sir Les is now buried in the Muslimcemetery next to supa nova. So, the least we can do is to putthings in order now before something like this happens to us inthe future! Spare your mates and family the added stress of notknowing your wishes etc if you were to pass on unexpectedly.

It was very lucky that one of Les's good mates was able to paythe hospital fees, to allow his body to be released for burial (youknow who you are) a big thank you!!!There will be a wake for Sir Les next Friday night the 28th Decat the Bali Bull in jalan singosari/ bakunsari k uta starting at 7pmall welcome more details call 081338726365.All donations welcome!Best Xmas wishes and a great new yearRegards,Mr Doug

Dear Mr Doug,I am very sad to hear of the loss of a local legend. Sir Les was agreat man with a lot of personality! It is a sad time for all of us at the'Kuta Weekly' as he was a great supporter & inspiration to us.

As adults we have the responsibility to make known our wishes(preferably by way of a will), should anything untoward happen to

us, it is not about age, it is about being a grown up. Theresponsibility should never fall onto anybody else's shoulders asemotions always run very high under stress & irrational decisionscan be made. As an expat or tourist to this Island & country you needto be aware that without insurance or a lot of cash you or your

family/ friends could be in a heap of hot water. Remembering we livein a foreign country with different beliefs & different regulations. Iurge you to get your affairs in order because you just never knowwhat tomorrow may bring.Wishing you all the best for 2013 dear!

"It has been the salary cap

auditor's absolute responsibility toreview all aspects of the paymentsin the contract and the negotiationsleading up to the contract.

"Ian Schubert has doneexactly what he is required to dothroughout this process and his taskhas been made more challenging bydeficiencies in the Roosters'documentation of the negotiations, which did not fully comply with theNRL's p layer contract andremuneration rules."

Mattiske said the Roosterscan expect a fine in the new year forfailing to put all their cards on thetable.

The Roosters failed to followregulations in recording andsupplying information to the ARLC,Mattiske said.

    Schubert had to seek advice

from a solicitor in rubber-stamping the deal and Mattiskesaid the ARLC would also keep aclose eye on Williams commercialagreements.

"There are a number ofassurances on the part of the cluband in relation to Sonny Bill's

commercial agreements that arebeing relied upon in this processand that will be monitored," hesaid.

"Given the unusual featuresof this contract it was necessaryfor Ian to engage a solicitor toassist with the investigation whichincluded interviews of a numberof persons and a consideration ofvarious documents.

"Ultimately, a report of theinvestigation was furnished to theCommission along with advicefrom Senior Counsel.

The Commission has alsodetermined that the club should

face a sanction ... the amount ofthis breach will be assessedfollowing a recommendation inthe new year."
