During an official visit to Nusa Penida Island, located a short distance of Bali's southern coast, governor Made Mangku Pastika was so disturbed by the site of plastic refuse scattered along his journey that he spontaneously included an unexpected offer in a speech delivered during a town hall meeting at Balai Desa Batu Nunggul.As reported by Seputarbali.com, the Governor challenged his audience to join his personal war on plastic trash. “I will replace 1 kilogram of plastic trash with 1 kilogram of rice,” Pastika told his large audience. The governor then immediately shelled out Rp. 10 million (US$1,000) of his own money, leaving the fund available and on hand for instant redemption on his promise.

The Bali traffic police have announced that heavy vehicles and trucks not engaged in the carriage of essential commodities will be banned from operating on the island's road from A u g u s t 4 u n t i l approximately August 8, 2013, in order to reduce traffic congestion.

Gday again punters and welcome to the weekly. What a week just

gone with the A.F.L , as with most of us almost getting the full tote until

the weagles spoilt that one. I think there chances are all but dashed

for one of the top spots this year. A damn close game with the Pies

almost getting pipped until they found their feet and took a nice win. Ill

get straight into a letter we received this week in reference to

something I briefly wrote about last week. The letter is as follows:

I would like to refer to the article your wrote last week regarding the show 'Dark Side Of Bali' and

some of the antics that some people (I prefer to call them idiots) think they can get up to whilst on

holiday in Bali, what annoys me is that they certainly wouldn't do it whilst at home in Australia so why

do they think it is ok to do it as Ambassadors for their country whilst away on holiday. I believe that

most Australians are sickened by their dreadful behaviour, I know that I am. It does appear that there

seems to be an under tone to Bali that most of us don't see and it is such a shame that people have

lost their lives whilst holidaying there. I must say that I have visited the Island on numerous

occasions and have never had any trouble whatsoever. I guess that wherever you travel there are

things that we don't usually see as Tourists but it is sad to think that women have been raped and

even murdered. All that aside I will still return to Bali for another visit in the near future.Keep up the

good work, I really enjoy reading your comments each week.

Vivienne. Bali is a progressive and growing place and I think

you will find a bad part of town anywhere you go in the world. I

also found a very well written article on a local blog which I

have put on page 38 and 39 which I would ask you all to read

as to date, its about the best explanation I have read in along

time. Unfortunately many tourists do come here and go

crazy. One fellow I often have a few quiet ones with has

always said “they check their bags in at the airport and check

their brains out” which is sometimes true.

We all hate to see the young blokes coming here and getting

messed up to the point where they have trouble, but hey, they

are as entitled to be on holidays as much as the next person.

If you take it easy and just enjoy the island for what it is you

generally will never have a problem.

Ok folks in closing this week I will bid you all a great week and

trust that the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and

always remember, when a good deal is too good to be true its

probably isnt…

Bali Property: A Bubble That's Ready to BurstBank Indonesia Says Bali's High Property Prices are Not Sustainable

Solopos.com reports that the Bali branch of Bank Indonesia will continue to try to control real estate prices on the Island in a sector the Bank views as “on alert” against a possible bubble, capable of bursting and sending prices tumbling.

Dwi Pranoto, the head of Bank Indonesia – Bali and Nusa Tenggara said the rapid and significant increase in real estate prices from year to year requires caution in the face of high costs, especially in South Bali.

The close supervision of p roper ty p r ices by Bank Indonesia is needed to prevent a b u b b l e e c o n o m y. B a n k Indonesia's current view is that p roper t ies a re p r i ced a t unsustainably high levels.

C o n t i n u i n g , D w i described how real estate brokers in Bali are involved in speculation. He contends that the g row ing bubb le bu i l t by speculation resembles past bubbles that have occurred in Jakarta, South Sulawesi, Batam and Riau. “In fact, the price of land in Bali, in real terms, is not so high,” Dwi said.

The Bank Indonesia executive blamed the current spike in property prices in Bali on brokers who justify higher prices with the completion of various infrastructure projects, including the Island's first toll way, the underpass at Simpang Siur and the renovation of the Ngurah Rai Airport.

To try to moderate Bali's property prices Bank Indonesia is reviewing loan to value ratios against loans extended by Indonesian banks. Changes in

the current loan-to-value ratios will be introduced by Bank Indonesia in September 2013.

M e a n w h i l e , B a l i business interests are urging the government to quickly define areas reserved for tourism development in the face of d i m i n i s h i n g l a n d a r e a s remaining for shared public use and other purposes.

Government Failing its Regulatory Responsibilities

The chairman of Real Estate Indonesia-Bali (REI-Bali), Putu Dewa Selawa, said the increasing loss of land for development projects demands that clear zoning laws be implemented as soon as possible. Developers need clear guidelines on lands available for d e v e l o p m e n t a n d l a n d s reserved as no-build green zones.

At the same t ime, S e l a w a , c a l l e d o n t h e government to set aside areas for essential services, such as hospitals and places of higher

learning. The real estate businessman reminded the government that they are failing in their role as a regulator by not clarifying zoning regulations.

Selawa acknowledged the need for a role by foreign i n v e s t o r s i n p r o p e r t y development in Bali, while, at the same time, insisting the role of foreign property investors must be controlled by firm rules in order to prevent losses to

Indonesia.He said that a lack of

socialization regarding no-build green zones in Bali has resulted in people purchasing land in these areas.

Tourism operators are also urging the government to del ineate tour ism zones, residential areas, and zones for government or public use in order to improve the business and investment climate in Bali.

RIGHT OF USE (HAK PAKAI)This is the right of use over state-owned

(crown land) or property owned by public or private persons/entities for a specific purpose for (generally) a finite period and occasionally for an indefinite period. This land right may not be sold, exchanged or transferred unless explicitly state in an agreement.

Hak pakai may be held by and Indonesian individual or entity. Or foreigner permanently domiciled in

Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIKThis structure is a regularly practiced

procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner.

Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee.

The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

Bali Legislators Calls for Relocation of Province's Capital to East Bali

A member of the Bali House of Representatives (DPR-Bali), I Gede Sumarjaya Linggih, has put forth the ideas of relocating the capital city of the province from Denpasar to K u b u i n t h e Karangasem Regency.

Quoted by the State News Agency Antara, the Golkar party legislator said:

“Up until now, the development in B a l i h a s b e e n central ized in the south. Efforts are needed to equalize (development) and one way is by moving the capital from Denpasar to Kubu.”

Linggih cites the extreme poverty of the people living in East Bali due to the lack of employment opportunities that continue to be concentrated in the Island's south.

“This is a form of injustice. It is a sin if leaders do not provide

justice and equality (of opportunity) in development,” said Linggih at a celebration of the election of Made Mangku Pastika and Ketut Sudikerta as governor and deputy-governor of Bali.

For this reason, Linggih also support the policies of the provincial government of Bali in isuing a moratorium of new hotels in South Bali that includes the regency of Badung and the capital city of Denpasar.

“If the development of hotels is not stopped, the investors will continue to build

hotels in that area,” said Linggih who hails from the regency of Buleleng.

Linggih, also known by the name of Damer, cited the minimum quality of health services in Bali's east and north.

Indonesia Institute Reveals Hardly Rank Among the Most Dangerous Destinations for Australian Holidaymakers

The Aust ra l ian-based Indonesia Inst i tute recently published its own rebuttal to media portrayals of Bali as having a “dark side” – incorrectly suggesting that Bali is among the most dangerous

destinations for A u s t r a l i a n holidaymakers.

Citing data from t h e A u s t r a l i a n Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) that records Australian deaths abroad over the past year, Bali did not rank anywhere near the top of three list for the deadliest destinations.

The report continued: “Bali is suffering from poor i n f r a s t r u c t u r e , p o l l u t i o n , corruption and simply too many tourists (rather than 'travellers') who treat this island as if it is their own backyard. It's not.”

Concluding, the Indonesia Institute says: “But despite all this, over 99% of Australians come home safely having had a really good holiday...even though we don't always deserve to do so!”

numbers of reported deaths Bali is one of the safest top 10 destinations for Aussies (at #8 on the list). Thailand is by far the worst at the top of the list with 111 Aussie deaths in 2012. So to use our intrepid reporters formula one Australian dies in Thailand every three days on average, now that's almost 3 times the Aussie/Bali death rate he reported on Sunday nite, but I don't see Aussie reporters and film crews in Bangkok drumming up a similar story, or on the streets of Manil la in the Philippines where 68 Aussies last year met their fate at a rate of close to one death every 5 days, almost double that of Bali.

Indeed, on a per capita basis Greece has the worst statistic as a place for Australians to visit with some 60 deaths recorded against only the 98,000 Australians who visited the country last year, and with a statistical chance of around 1 in 1600 of meeting your maker in Greece. Now that “statistic” w o u l d s u r e l y m a k e a headline…..not in Australia it doesn't! One of the major causes of deaths in Bali is traffic accidents, particularly motorbike accidents, with speed, lack of driver experience (most tourists don't ride motorcycles at home and are unlicenced), no helmet and alcohol are the main contributing factors. You also have people dying from drug overdoses, alcohol poisoning and yes occasionally the "odd" death caused by violence (and usually by drunken tourists fighting one another). Bali also has quite a large expat

population, so included in the number of reported deaths are the deaths of retirees and ex-pats, and people dying from natural causes while on holiday, from heart attack, strokes etc….but our intrepid reporter didn't tell you that on Sunday night, did he?

Sure, Bali can be a dangerous place, especially if you ride around on a motorbike on shoddy roads with no helmet, or get rotten legless drunk in nightclubs and end up in brawls in the street, but lets not forget that Indonesia is s t i l l a developing country and is l a c k i n g a l o t o f b a s i c

infrastructure and its usually when people (part icularly younger people) travel overseas they let their guard down and perhaps take more risks and do things that they would not normally do at home, and that's what causes accidents.

As stated DFAT recorded 904 Australians who died overseas in 2012, a 13 per cent jump from the year before. But DFAT officials are saying that the increase reflected a boost in the overall number of people travelling abroad and that there have not been any unusual trends in the figures for deaths of Australians overseas in 2012.

Accord ing to DFAT illness statistically account for 25 per cent of deaths followed by natural deaths (22 per cent), accidental (7 per cent) and suicide (0.6 per cent). Overall, the highest number of deaths were recorded in Thailand, the Philippines, Greece, Vietnam and the United States. One of the highest-profile cases reported was that of former Port Adelaide player John McCarthy, who died during a trip to Las Vegas, his death being classified as an accident.

Much of the negative stuff that gets reported about Bali is usually focussed around the

drunken “Aussie Bogan” tourists in a small strip called Kuta. Its in this area o f Ku ta where the nightclubs are located and where much of the “bad side” of Bali is seen. But again its not indicative of Bali's culture its what the tourists bring in with them. Yes, true there is an element of danger, chaos and risk in Bali, but its certainly no better or no worse than many other 1st world countries I have seen. I won't turn this into more

"tit for tat" but please Google how many foreign tourists died in Australia last each year.... you will be horrified at that number and will agree with me that the "pot shouldn't be calling the kettle black".

N e v e r t h e l e s s , I personally think that Bali is a safe place to visit and I still feel comfortable in taking my family there for a holiday and will be doing so again in 6 weeks time.

"Pink Panther" jewel thief escapes Swiss jailA r m e d m e n have broken a member of the so-called Pink Panther gang of jewel thieves out o f a S w i s s prison, police said.

B o s n i a n g a n g m e m b e r P o p a r i c M i l a n escaped the jail in the Swiss canton of Vaud, along with another prisoner, after accomplices in two vehicles forced their way through a gate and fired at prison guards.

The Pink Panthers, who have a weakness for expensive watches, have staged about 340 robberies on luxury stores in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and

the United States since 1999, making off with booty worth more than 330 million euros ($436.77 million), according to Interpol.

Milan, 34, had been serving a jail sentence of six years and eight months for robbing a

IT is one of the most famous cars in the history of the movies and when it goes under the hammer this September it could fetch over a million dollars.

But the James Bond submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me nearly sank without a trace.

The customized Lotus Esprit was forgotten about in a storage container in Long Island, New York. It only came to light after a local contractor bought unseen the contents of the container in 1989, paying less than $100, according to reports.

When the con t rac to r opened up the container with his brother he found the white sports

car without wheels and with a dented roof.

"They really didn't know what it was at first," said Doug Redenius, co-founder of the Ian Fleming Foundation, which authenticated the car.

Not knowing the value of his find he loaded the car on a truck. It was only after other truckers told him over the CB radio what it was and he had rented the film and seen the car in

act ion that he realized the value of the find.

MrRenediussaid t h a t e i g h t d i f f e r e n t versions of the car were driven by Roger Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me. This one will be sold by RM Auctions in London on September 9.

A documentary aired on network television in Australia on Sunday night (21/07/2013) titled, "The Dark Side of Bali". This program was promoted days earlier with the tag “One Australian dies every nine days in Bali”, used to hype up the prime time viewing slot.

Normally I just let these things blow by without comment, but unfortunately with todays technology, what should have been yesterdays fish & chip wrapper has become world news and couldn't let it just pass this time without balanced comment. Just type the phrase into Google and see the damage its caused to Bali's reputation globally with news services and RSS news feeds around the globe picking up on the headline. But what does this “statistic” actually mean, was it used out of context, is it untrue or is Bali really such a dark and dangerous place to visit (or live) ?

Look, the facts are very simple, the Dept Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirm that in 2012 a total of 904 Australians died whilst abroad. But it's when you compare the number of Australians visiting Bali against other popular destinations around the globe,

that you see these so called “statistics” in a fairer perspective. And let us start by remembering that Indonesia ranks just behind New Zealand as the most popular overseas destination for Australians.

In 2012 more than 797,000 Australians visited Bali and during that period there were 39

reported deaths on the island, so the news report was "technically" c o r r e c t t h a t o n e Australian dies in Bali every 9 days (9.35 days to be precise). But more i m p o r t a n t l y a n d statistically, that works out to be one in every 2 0 , 4 3 5 A u s t r a l i a n visitors to Bali who died on the island.

Now I'm sure everyone would agree that just one death is a tragedy but when we are clinically looking at “statistics” a 1 in 20,000+ chance of dying while holidaying in Bali pales into insignificance when compared to other Top 10 Aussie Holiday Destinations. Indeed when looking at tourist numbers statistically and on a per capita basis (per number of visitors) then Bali comes out number one as the “Safest Place To Visit” by Australians.

Bali Governor Standing Firm in His Support of Benoa Bay Reclamation Project

Bali's Governor Made Mangku Pastika made a spirited defense of a recommendation he issued on behalf of PT Tirta Wahana Bali International (PT TWBI) for the development and reclamation of an island in Benoa Bay located within a protected mangrove forest area.

the governor made the following points:

P a s t i k a defended the reclamation project covering 838 hectares in Benoa Bay as being of critical importance to the people of Bali.

The Governor vehemently denied as without basis corruption allegations filed with the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Agency (KPK) that he had received a bribe in connection with his support of the reclamation project.

P a s t i k a explained that the planned reclamat ion wi l l actual ly generate new land owned by the province and will yield more than 400 hectare in new forested areas.

The operating license to be granted to PT TWBI is for a fixed period of 30 years, extendable for an additional 20 years, meaning the new land mass created will eventual ly be under the complete ownership and control

of the people of Bali.Denied claims that

the recommendation granted to PT TWBI is in violation with existing land-use laws, insisting those who drafted the recommendation were lawyers well versed in the law.

R e s p o n d e d t o those saying the new project will transgress his office's moratorium on new hotel projects in Bali, saying that Bali is not oversupplied with accommodation. In a reversal o f a n e a r l i e r s t a n c e o n accommodation supply in Bali, Pastika now says calculations of the supply and demand in hotel rooms done by the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) are in error.

In a move to achieve a consensus and quell the ongoing debate over the reclamation planned for Benoa Bay, Governor Pastika will invite all interested parties to an open meeting to discuss the project planned for August 3, 2013.

I have made a stupid mistake and don't know what to do. One night when I was drunk and my girlfriend was fighting with me i put a picture of her online. It shows her face and everything. We have made up since then and things have been really good. I almost forgot about the picture but recently I was on some other sites and I saw her picture. It wasn't the same place i posted it...i deleted that one but its obviously got passed around. I don't know what to do? I know if she finds out she'll kill me. If I hadn't already said she is naked in the photo and you can see her face.

Are you serious? I mean, who does that? Who decides they are that upset with someone they are dating or someone they are supposed to love they'll post an intimate photo of them on the internet? You know the internet...the place where nothing ever goes away?You've committed such a gross act of betrayal it's really hard to think of a way out for you. You've posted an image online that has now been seen by strangers maybe a handful, but more likely hundreds or even thousands. And her face is showing!Your girlfriend clearly trusted you enough to send you that photo in the first pace or let you take it. And you pay her back by treating her with that sort of contempt and disrespect. It's hard to imagine doing something like that to someone I hated, let alone someone I cared about. Even if I was angry.But whatever your motivation; whatever your level of drunkenness when you posted that pic; whatever your level of mental impairment, you've done it now so there's no going back.My first thought is you need to tell her. You need to front up and confess you've done the wrong thing and beg her forgiveness. You need to do everything possible to get the pictures taken down. I'm no tech expert, but I know you can put an image into Google image search and find where it's running. If that's the case you might be able to make some attempt to retrieve it.If that sounds a bit lame and hopeless it's because it probably is. If the picture is interesting and appealing people will pass it around and they will not care about giving it back just because you're feeling remorseful.So that was my first thought. Try to get it taken down and be honest. But then I wondered...Will it help her to know her image is being viewed by strangers? Will it help her to have that knowledge? I'm not sure in her position I'd even want to know. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss. The moment you tell her that picture has gone around you will ruin her year. Maybe her decade.So perhaps there is a genuine case for saying nothing at all. And maybe as time passes the picture will move out of circulation and she'll never realise she was unmasked so publicly.Please, if nothing else, try to make it your life's work to not act like a total arse again dear!

"Leaps and Bounds" / "Bradman" is a double A-sided single by Australian rock group Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls released in January 1987. "Leaps and Bounds" is from their debut double album, Gossip (1986). "Bradman" did not appear on a studio album until the international version of Under the Sun (1988). The single reached top 100 in the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart. Due to possible racist connotations the band changed its name, for international releases, to Paul Kelly and the Messengers. In 1997, Kelly was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, at the ceremony Crowded House paid tribute to Kelly and performed "Leaps and Bounds". In October 2003, Xanthe Littlemore covered "Leaps and Bounds" for the tribute album, Stories of Me – A Songwriter's Tribute to Paul Kelly. In 2005, rock music writer, Toby Creswell described two of Kelly's songs: "Leaps and Bounds" and "From Little Things Big Things Grow" in his book, 1001 Songs. For the former, Creswell observed "The grand themes ofhis work are all there – Melbourne, football, transcendence and memory... he is a detail man – the temperature, the location , foliage". On 26 March 2006 Kelly performed at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in Melbourne, singing "Leaps and Bounds" and "Rally Around the Drum". In February 2009 Patience Hodgson (of The Grates), Glenn Richards and Kelly performed "Leaps and Bounds" at the Myer Music Bowl for SBS-TV's concert RocKwiz Salutes the Bowl. On 29 September 2012 Kelly performed "How to Make Gravy" and "Leaps and Bounds" at the 2012 AFL Grand Final although most of the performance was not broadcast on Seven Network's pre-game segment.

Swans beat Tigers by 47Sydney finished round 18 in third spot on the ladder after a 47-point defeat of Richmond at the SCG on Sunday evening.

The Swans struggled early against a fired-up Tigers side but they gradually got the upper hand before clinching their fifth straight victory 16.14 (110) to 9.9 (63).

Richmond's defence could not cope with the Swans' tall trio of Kurt Tippett, Jesse White and Mike Pyke, who scored eight goals between them.

White (four goals) was on the outer at the club last year, rejected by the Crows in the trading period as a makeweight for a deal for Kurt Tippett to come to the Swans.

He has now kicked eight goals in three games since coming back into the side.

But he remains in a fierce contest for an ongoing spot as a tall in the Sydney forward line with the likes of Tippett, Pyke, Shane

Mumford, Adam Goodes and long-term injury list player Gary Rohan all trying to fit into the Swans' future plans.

White told Grandstand that the move for Tippett had affected his confidence.

"The initial thought was I thought it was going to be pretty tough for me," he said.

"I had to sit down and see what strengths I brought to the side.

"I'm now playing as a sort of half-forward and really enjoying it.

"If I can bring my strengths to

the team which I think I'm doing, I'll continue to keep playing (for Sydney)."

The Tigers led by 13 points early in the first quarter but that was as good as it got for the visitors, who were tied at quarter time and 15 points down at the main break.

When White kicked his fourth of the day a minute before three quarter time, the Swans' lead was out to 34

Power down Lions to return to top eightIn a see-sawing contest the lead changed five times but the home side prevailed 9.17 (71) to 9.8 (62).

Port Adelaide had the lion's share of free kicks, awarded 21 frees to Brisbane's 11, and the Power led by 10 points at quarter-time and half-time.

A five-goals-to-three third quarter then saw the Lions briefly grab hold of the lead before the Power hit back to hold a four-point margin with a quarter to go.

In a tight final term there was no score whatsoever until the 16-minute mark, when Brisbane's Daniel Merrett played on after taking a defensive mark in the goal square, and the Power finally scrambled the ball home at the third attempt thanks to Chad Wingard.

The Lions' Dayne Zorko missed a kick from just outside 50 a minute later, Sam Mayes missed a set shot with three minutes left and when Power defender Cameron O'Shea marked on the goalline with a

minute to go, the game was Port Adelaide's.

Jay Schulz kicked two goals for the Power, while Zorko and Jonathan Brown kicked two each for the Lions.

Schulz told Grandstand that difficult conditions and pressure had played their part in the Power's unusual fumbles with the ball against Brisbane.

"A little bit of that (pressure) and probably a little bit of conditions as well," he said.

"Our kick to handball ratio today wasn't good as well, I think when

our kick to handball ratio isn't right that tends to be when we fumble, because we put each other under pressure a bit when we handball to guys who are under the pump.

"That's something we've got to work on, we've got to kick the footy more and get it right because we're a much better side and a much better attacking side when we do that."

Schulz praised Wingard, who kicked the initial ball into attack, before running forward and crumbing the ball for the vital opening goal of the final term.

"He's a very talented player ... everyone knows he is going to be a superstar for us for the next 10 to 15 years," he said.

The Power's win leapfrogs them above Carlton into eighth spot with five rounds left.

The loss al l but ends Brisbane's season, with the Lions now three games out of the top eight.

Russians smell something fishy

There was a time when Vladimir Putin's macho antics i n s p i r e d p r i d e a m o n g Russians, but many are finding it hard to believe the president's latest stunt catching a huge pike in Siberia.

Video footage released by the Kremlin last week showed Putin dressed in camouflage fatigues and sunglasses, fishing, driving a motorboat and petting reindeer in a remote region of Siberia with his prime minister and defence minister.

But the images of the 60-year-old president hauling in a pike which the Kremlin said weighed 21 kg (46 pounds) proved too much for some Russians to swallow.

Within hours, online satir ists were questioning whether the incident was staged and whether the pike was really as big as the Kremlin said.

"Wonder who planted that fish for Putin to catch," said a caption placed under two online pictures, one of Putin holding the fish and the other showing Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev emerging from a river in a wetsuit with a satisfied look.

election commission chief Vladimir Churov who is accused by the opposition of conjuring victory for Putin's party in elections which they say were marred by fraud. He denies doing so.

P u t i n h a s o f t e n burnished his image since first coming to power in 2000 with outdoor exploits such as riding a horse with a bare torso and

shooting a tiger with a tranquilizer.

But the Kremlin admitted under pressure that a stunt in 2011, in which Putin found ancient artefacts at the bottom of the Black Sea, was staged. When he flew with migrating storks last year, he was widely mocked online.

This time, the Kremlin stood firm.

"I personally saw the scales and was present in the weighing. It was seriously more than 20 kg (44 lb)," Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov said.

Putin remains Russia's most popular politician, with a recent opinion poll showing his trust level at 45 percent, but his authority was dented by mass protests in Moscow and other big cities that began in late 2011 and carried on into 2012.

Lewis Hamilton breaks Mercedes duck in Hungarian Grand Prix as Mark Webber recovers to fourth place

It was Hamilton's 22nd win of his career and a success that restored him among the challengers for this year's drivers' championship.

He is now fourth in the title race with 124 points behind leader Vettel on 172 and Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso on 134 and 133 respectively.

"It's an incredible feeling and I'd like to thank all the fans here," said Hamilton.

" M y t e a m d i d a n incredible job, we studied a lot last night and were hoping the tyres would last.

"We had no idea it would go that well, but I was hungry for it today. I was going all out. Usually, I get stuck in traffic, but today I was going for every move I could. I wasn't having any of that.

"This has been one of the best and most important wins of my career.

"To change teams and to win here for Mercedes Benz. This is a real privilege for me and I hope there are many more to come."

Lewis Hamilton ended weeks of frustration on Sunday night when he finally won his first race for Mercedes by claiming a dominant textbook triumph in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The 28-year-old Briton led from pole position to the chequered flag, apart from three short spells for pit-stops, as he secured his fourth victory at the Hungaroring in sweltering conditions.

The 2008 world champion came home 11 seconds clear of Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and third-placed defending triple world champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull, who was unable to force his way into second place in the closing laps.

Australian Mark Webber finished fourth in the second Red Bull ahead of two-time champion A l o n s o a n d s i x t h - p l a c e d Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus, who endured a familiar race of incidents and penalties.

G r o s j e a n w a s l a t e r penalised 20 seconds for a clash with Jenson Button but he retained his sixth-place finish.

Raikkonen said: "I keep making my life difficult on Saturdays so we pay the price. I had a good car, we did two stops, it was tight with Seb at the end, but we gained some good points in the championship."

Vettel, who appeared upset by a brush with the Finn during their duel, said: "It was not the best race. The start was difficult and when Lewis pulled in we thought we could do it on the softs.

"But I damaged my front wing which did not help. I tried to hang on in there and tried to fight back with Kimi. I could not get him on the straight. I told Kimi I was not happy, but he was laughing. That's racing."

It was the Mercedes team's third win of the season, German Nico Rosberg having won the Monaco and British races.

Bu t ton came home seventh for McLaren ahead of Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Sergio Perez in the second McLaren.

Pastor Maldonado delivered the Williams team's first point of the season by finishing 10th.

Hamilton's pole was his third in successive races that had seen him unable to exploit the advantage - a spectacular tyre failure at Silverstone wrecking his hopes while leading the British Grand Prix.

But this time, in Mercedes' 350th race as engine suppliers in Formula One, he enjoyed some of the luck that had been missing elsewhere to mark his 120th Grand Prix with a well-taken win.

The blog was momentarily taken down after concerns were expressed by her employer but was re-posted with “no apologies” added to the title. A disclaimer was also added to the new blog.

Party pooper ends karaoke with shovelThe Village People famously sang the line, "Nobody can stop the music".

Well, apparently all it takes is a party pooper with a shovel.

Police are looking for a man who was so fed up with the musical talents of guests at a karaoke party in Tully in far north Queensland that he took matters into his own hands.

He allegedly entered the Pease Street home just before midnight, smashed the machine with a shovel and left.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 175cm tall with a proportionate build, aged in his 50s with blond and grey hair and a moustache.

Birth just hours after discovering pregnancyA 41-year-old British woman has given birth to a healthy baby girl just 15 hours after finding she was pregnant.

Amanda Ross was shopping with her partner Paul Dean, 53, when she complained of stomach cramps.

M s R o s s complained to her doctor o f recent bouts of bloating, blaming it on constipation.

Her GP referred her to a midwife who told a surprised Ms Ross she was in fact seven or eight months pregnant.

M s R o s s , o f S o u t h Gloucestershire, was sent home to rest but at 1.30am told her husband her stomach was

rumbl ing and they needed to get to hospital.

At South Hospital in Bristol doctors performed an emergency caesarean section. Baby Chloe was born soon after 15 hours after Ms Ross found out she was pregnant.

T h e s h o c k e d new mum said she was still getting used to the i d e a o f h a v i n g a newborn.

The Mail quoted her as saying: "My first reaction when they told me I was pregnant was one of sheer terror.

"I thought 'Oh my God', I could have done this 10 years ago but I'm in my 40s.

"I had no idea I was expecting there'd been no flutters, no cravings, no kicking, no

morning sickness, no kicking, nothing.

" W e w e r e t o t a l l y unprepared for a new baby we hadn't even got a cotton bud.

“Thankfully our families have been really good, running around to get everything we need."

Vampire beast strikes again in USLocals in North Carolina believe a legendary beast may have struck again in the United States.

Since the legend of the mythical Mexican predator first emerged, there have been reported s ight ings of the chupacabra all over North and Central America.

The Lat in Amer ican monster is known for attacking livestock, usually goats. After it has maimed its prey, the chupacabra drinks their blood.

The name chupacabra comes from the Spanish 'chupar' (to suck) and 'cabra' (goat).

Descriptions over the years include spikes or quills on its back to hairless dogs with fangs and claws.

Scientists believe the creatures are merely coyotes infected by parasites after one animal was discovered last July following a fatal attack on

livestock.T h e f i r s t

reported sighting was in 1995, when eight sheep were found dead in Puerto Rico with identical puncture wounds to the chest a n d c o m p l e t e l y drained of blood.

It was their mysterious deaths supposedly spawned the legend of the

chupacabra in Latin America.Months later, the creature

was allegedly spotted in north-eastern Puerto Rico where 150 animals perished.

Since then, there have been attacks allegedly carried out by the chupacabra across South and Central America, and even into New Mexico and Texas.

Brisbane's desperate fight to stay in the NRL finals hunt has copped a hit with New Zealand international Alex Glenn requiring surgery for a broken thumb.

Glenn suffered the fracture in the Broncos' gritty 18-16 win over North Queensland on Friday night and faces four weeks on the sidelines.

The Kiwis back-rower was booked in for an operation after meeting with a Brisbane surgeon on Monday morning and will struggle to be return in time to have an influence on Brisbane's play-off hopes.

Glenn has been among the struggling Broncos most consistent performers and captained the side in the absence of Sam Thaiday during the State of Origin period.

While he will miss Friday night's away clash with Newcastle, there are hopes former Queensland Origin front-rower Ben Hannant can return to take on a Knights' pack that will be missing Willie Mason (calf).

Hannant has struggled to overcome his own calf injury and had hoped to be back for last week's trip to Townsville before being scratched on match eve.

"It's been a hard road for him trying the get back there but hopefully he can be back this week as he can definitely help us out in the middle there," back-rower Matt Gillett said.

"They've got a big pack... and it all starts in the middle and finishes in the middle so our pack has to get over their pack."

Maroons trio Thaiday, Justin Hodges and Corey Parker also missed training at Red Hill on Monday but Gillett insisted they were being rested and would play in Newcastle.

Brisbane's two-point win over the Cowboys, stolen with a late Hodges try, kept the club's season alive and took it to within four points of eighth-placed Newcastle.

"It was a bit of relief to finally get that win," Gillett said. France will play t h r e e T e s t matches against Australia in June next year, the French Rugby Federation (FFR) a n n o u n c e d overnight.

P h i l i p p e Saint-Andre's side, which was beaten three times by the All Blacks on tour this year, wi l l begin a g a i n s t t h e Wallabies on June 7 in Brisbane - a week after the end of France's domestic Top 14 season.

The tourists will then leave for Melbourne for a second tie on June 14, before a third game against new Australia coach Ewen McKenzie's men on June 21 in Sydney, the FFR said.

Les Bleus ran out 33-6 winners against Australia at the Stade de France in Paris last year.

But they have struggled away from home, with their most recent victory back in 1990, when Saint-Andre and current backs coach Patrice Lagisquet were part of the team that won 28-19 in

visit to Australia was in 2009, when it lost 22-6, also in Sydney.

Saint-Andre's team has only won once in eight matches in 2013 and embarassingly finished bottom in the Six Nations tournament last season.

Bulldogs too strong for Eagles at DocklandsIt was a must-win game for the Eagles but, although they started the stronger, the visitors were overhauled by the Bulldogs who finished with a 16.15 (111) to 13.11 (89) victory, the team's fifth of the year.

The loss is a devastating blow to the Eagles' already tenuous finals chances, as John Worsfold's men are now three games outside the eight.

The home side was stronger across most facets of the game, with the advantage in clearances, stoppages, forward 50 entries and contested possessions.

However the Bulldogs trailed for most of the first half before steadying with a five goal to three third quarter which gave them a 14-point advantage at the final change.

Young gun Luke Dahlhaus made the difference for the Bulldogs, kicking two goals in the second quarter and another two in the third.

When Jarrad Grant scored early in the final term the lead was out to 21 points, and small forward Tory Dickson's third at the four minute mark proved to be the sealer.

The visitors pegged the lead back with three late goals, but in the end the Eagles headed west empty-handed.

Bulldogs skipper Matthew Boyd told Grandstand his team-mates had nearly paid for going into their shell in the final term.

"We probably were a bit

tentative and went away from taking the game on like we did in the first three quarters," he said.

"The senior guys have been through it all before, the younger guys rely on us to get the set-ups right and stay composed.

"I thought we were able to do that pretty well out there."

Boyd said the win over the Eagles was an impor tan t s ign o f the Bulldogs' development.' I t ' s rea l l y impor tan t ,

especially for such a young group," he said.

"Just the belief that we can win games of footy if we play the right way for long enough.

"When the bad patches did come we were able to hang in there - I think early in the year we were blown away in those bad patches."

Grant and Dickson both finished with three goals, while Josh Kennedy and Josh Hill kicked three each for the Eagles.
