Stage Reports

Early Stage 1 Report Curiosity is a wonderful attribute to encourage and we have noticed our Kindergarten students are asking so many interesting and thoughtful questions so we have decided to set up a ‘Wonder Wall’ outside the Kindy classrooms. We will put up the questions that our students ask on the wall and endeavour to investigate the answers together. If your child has a question about our weather topic (eg why is the sky blue? Or ‘How are rainbows made?’) or anything at all (scientific or not!) please jot their wonderings down and give them to us/send an email to the school so we can add them to our wall and we will endeavour to investigate.

If you or another family member have a spare 20 minutes to an hour a week/fortnight to listen to children read, please come and talk to us if you are interested. It is time well spent to help these budding readers improve their decoding skills. You just need to submit your Working With Children Check number to the office prior to volunteering. Thank you for your support. Mrs Sarah Parker and Mrs Catherine Harris - Kindergarten Teachers

Stage 2 Report Stage 2 enjoyed a wonderful day on Thursday along with the rest of the school with some amazing activities and learning opportunities on Science Day. Everyone had an opportunity to make a soaring paper plane, a long-floating parachute, a skyscraping tower and learn about the Solar System from Mr Hester and then place their planet in a spot closest to the correct spot on the model on the oval. Fantastic hands-on activities. We also visited the Science Fair and saw some incredible displays of work made by students of KPS. In Geography we have been learning more about the features of our wonderful country and our location in terms of the rest of the world. We are researching facts about other countries in Computer lessons and will be putting these together to present at the end of the term. Mrs Beckman, Mr Morgan and Mr Mahoney Stage 2 teachers

Stage 3 Report What a super busy week it was. KPS had to juggle Science day, Sutherland Shire School Music Festival and the Zone Athletics Carnival all into one week. We all had a fantastic time experimenting and creating on Thursday during the Science Fair. The tower competition has us planning, creating, testing and re-planning again. Although it seemed easy, trying to make the tallest tower with weak materials proved challenging but surprisingly, tall towers prevailed! Selected stage 3 students were busy practicing their impromptu speeches for the KPS Public Speaking competition to be held in Week 6. Be sure to come along and hear our talented speakers present their opinions on a variety of topics. Looking forward to more events and learning as the term progresses. Mr Mahoney and Mr Macfadden Stage 3 Teachers

Sports Report PSSA Netball Superstars Our Junior and Senior girls’ netball teams did Kirrawee Public School proud at the PSSA Semi-Finals and Finals on Friday 11th August. The Seniors won their Semi-Final comfortably over Lilli-Pilli and played Gymea Bay in the Finals, narrowly losing to them by just 3 points: the final score was 8-11. The Junior team also played very well, they tried so hard against the Gymea Bay Junior team. They were disappointed not to make the Finals but must remember how much they have improved over the season to come this far. I also reminded them that Gymea Bay PS is a huge school with four times as many netballers than KPS so we should be even more proud of our achievements. We have many girls for whom this was their first season and they have learnt the rules and skills of the game very well. Players should be congratulated for their efforts, enthusiasm and wonderful team spirit which made it difficult to pick the women of the matches. Those who really stood out were: Senior Semi-Final: Sophie Keers (GA) for her consistent and accurate shooting, calm demeanour, knowledge of the game and superb teamwork with Josephine Webber. Senior Final: Abbey Stewart (GD) for her fabulous interceptions, being all over the court and a dangerous defence player along with Kanak Sharma. Junior Semi-Final: Tyler Thorn (GD) for her consistent effort, energy and resilience even when the game wasn’t going the way she wanted. Well done girls! Mrs Catherine Harris

Major School FUNdraiser Success $4258 raised on Science Investigation day

Dear Parents/Caregivers, Well, what a day and what a phenomenal success! Kirrawee PS celebrated National Science Week last week and by all accounts it was one of the most enjoyable and memorable school days of the year! There was much excitement and activity surrounding the planned activities and the students enthusiastically embraced the learning challenges on the day. The Science Fair was a huge success and there were more than 30 entries/ exhibits/ displays/ experiments etc. It was wonderful to see the level of effort that was applied to preparing an exhibit. It is also heart-warming to see science being embraced by the students especially when it involves the students preparing an item as an additional home learning piece. We should congratulate the student/s who made the most successful design challenges on the day;

A huge thank you needs to be extended to Dr James Hester, an ANSTO Scientist, for his time and expertise given on the day. Dr Hester led a Solar System explanation which culminated with the students placing a designated planet on a 120m scale model of the Solar System. This was a phenomenal sight to see 225 scale planets all placed in relation to the sun along the full length of the oval. The day was not only a success in terms of the learning goals achieved but we would like to personally thank all of the families who raised sponsorship for the school for this day also. As a result of your hard

work the school was able to raise $4,258; a huge amount for which we are most grateful. These funds

have been targeted for specific school resources and will be a much valued asset to the students and school. There were some students who deserve special recognition for their efforts; RAISED $50-$99; Tyrus B - KH Dominic F – KP Jade L – KH Lily O – KH Keiley R – KH Emily S – KP Robert C – 5/6M

Snr Choir and Dance Report Last week was another big week for Kirrawee Performing Arts members. On Wednesday, the senior choir and dance teams rehearsed at Sutherland Entertainment centre to iron out all the bugs and prepare ourselves for the following night’s main event. Thursday night came and once again a wonderful night was had by all. All dance and choir member performed superbly. Thank you to all parents and carers involved in the hard task of ‘support crew’ and these nights can be especially difficult to manage. Finally, a big well done to all students involved. We hope you cherish these creative memories forever and perhaps look back at these events when you’re big and famous! Mrs Whicker and Mr Mahoney Dance and Senior Choir Coordinator
