MARCH is finally here. Spring arrives this month, and although the weather is unpredictable, guild activities are not. It’s time to think of next year’s leadership, time to start (or finish) the box top chal- lenge due in April, time to sign up for a last retreat or workshop. It’s also time to start thinking about next year’s quilt show. The commit- tee certainly is! While I’m on the subject of time, it has just turned into a “@#&$” four letter word for me. I thought my quilting for March was predictable, box top challenge being first on the list, but my husband and I have just been invited to a celebration that requires a gift. Buy something or make two quilts? TIME is critical, as the party is in April. And I have two other projects that I NEED to start and finish first! We’ve all been in this position before, but it is one situa- tion that doesn’t seem to get any eas- ier with practice! Please take the time to read the news- letter, seriously consider participating in the various activities/positions avail- able, and continue to make our guild a place you want to be. We belong to something special, but it needs YOU to keep it going. HAPPY QUILTING! Report from the "inch" collector Your inches have turned into a total of 1.71 miles (2.4 km)!

Congratulations! Our total for February is 30,739 inches - our

longest month of the whole campaign!

In Orleans we have stitched from the

MIFO centre, along Carriere, down Or-

leans Blvd. to St. Joseph, left on St. Jo-

seph, right onto Jeanne D'Arc and

across the bridge to Fortune Ave.

See the picture of the final "inch" quilt that brought up the end of

our Bring and Brag session in February on page 4.

I have enjoyed collecting the "inches" each month and was so im-

pressed with the participation and enthusiasm displayed by the

members of the guild. You are a wonderful talented group of la-

dies and I am proud to be a member along side of you.

I shall report the cross country distance at our March meeting.

Susan

Spring is approaching… I think. I know, it is still snowing out there and quite cold, but I am pretty sure that spring is around the cor-ner soon enough and YES, it will come. You know what else comes with spring? The time to finish your Guild Quilt Challenge. I bet you were thinking I was going to say the election of the executive and committees. OK, I have to admit this was my next topic. As you know, we need to fill some vacant Executive and Committee

positions for the 2013-14 year. Have you ever thought of joining the executive or a committee? Make this year your year. You will not be left to figure out what you are supposed to do; the executive and committee members are there to help you learn your new functions, to support you and act as mentors to ensure that you are set for success.

Please support your Guild. Your Guild is as good and interesting as its members make it. Your involvement and input are always welcome and only makes for a greater organization.

Looking forward to working with you.

How can you help? You can sign out a bag of do-nated fabric to sew into a top or finished quilt; or sign out a quilt top to be quilted; or donate a quilt, backing or batting.

1) The Common Thread Quilt Guild collects monthly donations of Cuddle Quilts for use at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital. Our goal for 2012-2013 is 350. 38 were delivered in Febru-ary.

SIZE MATTERS: Check out the size requirements: for optimum utility, please make your Cuddle Quilts 18” x 24”, or make them 22” square. Our battings and backings are cut 24”x 24” to finish 22” square.

2) We support the women’s programs and seniors programs at the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre with adult themed Comfort

Quilts (40" x 60”). We have a request from the Eastern Ottawa Re-

source Centre for walker pockets. These are pouches that hang on walkers and are used for carrying items like glasses, wallets, magazines, etc. We are asking that you return the finished pockets by March. In December we delivered 10 walker pockets and have committed to giving them 30 more.

3) CHEO Children’s Oncology –Children’s quilts from tots to teens.

4) CHEO Dialysis - Children’s quilts from tots to teens.

5) Chernobyl Quilts - All sizes from infant to adult can be donated for shipping to Chernobyl.

6) Interval House - Bright and cheerful quilts.

Thank you Jan. 25, 2013

Dear Victoria,

All of your quilts are bagged and

ready to go!! Dave has a special place for the 40 x

60’s and the small ones are for the baby

orphanages. They will love them for sure!

It’s exciting for us to see the different colours and

designs. Frankly, I don’t know how your guild

does so much. Sometime after Feb 5th, we’ll turn

over the quilts.

Many, many thanks.

Mary Bernard

P.S. If it’s any help, you could machine stitch on

the bindings, they are more durable that way.

Good day ladies! Here’s the line-up at press time: • May 4 (Saturday) – Quilt Diva – Notre-Dame des Champs in Navan – bring

your pattern – (available at Dragonfly Fabrics – not sure if Quilty Pleasures or Aunt Beth’s has it)

Our regular workshop fees are $35 for CTQG members and, $40 for non-members. Special workshops will be priced differently. Remember that we need a minimum of 6 registered quilters that have paid, to run a workshop or else it gets cancelled and fees get reimbursed to those who had registered and paid. I'm looking for fresh and new quilt workshop ideas. If you have workshop sug-gestion, send me information at: [email protected] See you at the March meeting!

Just a reminder that your completed Challenge pieces are due at the April 9th meeting. For those of you who like to work under pressure, you have one month left, it’s not too late! Please remember to also bring your box top and to label your project, but cover up the label so that voting will be fair. The pieces will be displayed at the meeting on May 14th where everyone in attendance will get to vote for their favorite. You will get to take your piece home with you after the May meeting.

Quilt Musing Jane Maddin

I have been listening to new podcasts this week, while I am away from my sewing machine. I was listening to one that relates to quilting and the inter-viewer asked the interviewee what she was working on. And the interviewee (whose name I did not catch, but who was a blogger who details her pro-gress on-line) proceeded to talk about the quilts that she was working on. And she sounded embar-rassed to admit that she had about 5 quilts in pro-gress AT THE SAME TIME. I thought the interviewer (also a quilter) handled the whole thing very well, because she said to her, "Oh, you are just normal, then!" I have written musings on this topic before. I think I mentioned the woman in the fabric store who only allows herself to buy the fabric to make ONE project at a time. And her personal rule is, she must finish that project before she goes on to do another. (I have to say, if I worked in a fabric store this would be the only way that I would ever get to take home a paycheck... otherwise I would just sign the thing over, and walk out with additions to my stash...) I have many quilting friends. And I don't think I know ANYONE else who follows that personal rule. I love to have several projects on the go (as long as they don't get too far ahead of me, of course!) I like to have something that I am binding, something that I am cutting, something that I am planning, some-thing that I am piecing (although that stage usually gets me so excited that I forge on with it and get it quilted and the binding on there) AND something all ready to quilt. (I'm not keen on having something ready to go onto the frame - but I am pretty pleased with myself when I have something ON the frame, ready to go!) I'm also pretty enthused about having something that I am learning on the go too, some-thing new to me... I'm beginning to think about what to do with these one-off blocks... Each stage in a quilt is different. The nice thing about binding something is that that is a portable

project (when so many quilting things are not!) And, of course, when the binding is done the quilt is finished too. (Usually) The nice thing about cutting is that once the pieces go on the design wall, you be-gin to see how the quilt is going to look when it is all finished. The nice thing about piecing is that it works up so fast and you can see progress happening before your very eyes, and the nice thing about planning is that it is SO exciting!!! And the quilting itself is wonderful (when everything goes well) because you are beginning to finish the quilt! I love all those steps and I feel eager to get on with each one of them. And I might actually get bored with working on the same quilt or project. Sometimes I intermix projects as a reward. Do this boring bag, and you can be rewarded by starting that pretty baby quilt... or make these three blocks, so that you can be rewarded by taking this quilting class and starting THAT neat project! Interspersing steps means that I will shortly have two exciting projects done rather than one that I have gotten slightly tired of working on! I know that there are people who work so hard on something, or they find it so difficult, or they are so worried that it isn't perfect that they grow to hate a project; and as a result it goes under the bed or in a box and never gets finished. I have never had this happen with quilting. It may be because I don't tend to let projects carry on too long -- so I don't get tired of them. I have made a few projects where I will never do again (stack and whack comes to mind) but I finished them (and gave them away!) So here's the point of this diatribe: Normal is de-fined as: conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; not abnormal; regular; natural. By this definition, if you have several projects on the go (and even a few that aren't actually going any-where) then you are absolutely NORMAL!! So, I would like to invite you to embrace your nor-malcy, enjoy your quilting and have fun!!
