EARLY STAGE 1 REPORT Kindergarten have been busy with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering Arts and Mathematics) projects in recent weeks. We enjoyed learning about Rube Goldberg machines and working as a team to create our own Rube Goldberg marble run. This involved designing, making, testing, re-making, problem solving when something went wrong and creative thinking. We also practised these skills during our cup tower challenge and stick-house challenge where our Kindy engineers had to rebuild a house for one of the three little pigs that would stay upright when the big bad wolf tried to blow it over. A big thank you to families who were able to join us during Education Week and Science Week to help us with these projects. We have also conducted some investigations in class – the latest one being how a flower ‘drinks’ water to keep it alive and how it actually uses the water. We are looking forward to our excursion to the Wollongong Science Centre on Monday 3rd September with Stage One. Please remember to bring permission slips and make payment for this excursion if you have not already done so. Parent Teacher Interviews are in week 7. Please book in online if you wish to discuss your child’s progress with us. Interviews are in 15-minute slots. Mrs Harris and Mrs Werner Early Stage One teachers

On and off the Bus Safely

Your child is most at risk just after getting off the bus. To reduce this risk, meet your child at the bus stop, never

on the opposite side of the road. At the bus stop, hold hands and stand with your child, well away from the passing traffic. Never wait close to

the kerb.

Wait until the bus has driven off before choosing the safest place to cross the road. Then follow the usual road

crossing procedures with your child.

STOP! One step back from the kerb.

LOOK! For traffic to your right, left and right again.

LISTEN! For the sounds of approaching traffic.

THINK! Whether it is safe to cross.

Teach your child to turn their head in both directions to look and listen for traffic as they cross the road.

Remember, until your child turns 10, hold your child's hand whenever you cross the road.

At school, your child learns about road safety as part of Personal Development, Health and Physical

Education. Help them learn the bus safety messages by using them and sharing them whenever you are out

and about on a bus.

STAGE 2 REPORT

Stage 2 have continued to explore the journeys of different characters in books such as The Little Refugee and The Colour of Home. Students have explored topics such as lose, hope, loneliness and belonging through these texts. We hope that students will continue to develop their understanding of other cultures and the emotions and hardship that child face when coming to a new country as a refugee. We had an amazing turnout for book week! Thank you to all the parents and carers for helping dress up the students.

Congratulations to all Stage 2 students who made it into the finals for public speaking! Everyone did an amazing speech on the day and a big congratulations to the Stage 2 winners, Mia, Max and Nicholas.

Don’t forget that parent teacher interviews are next week. Please complete the online booking form to set up an interview time. Patrick Morgan and Sarah Whicker

STAGE 3 REPORT

Last week our school public speaking finals were held in the hall. Well done to all 12 students who competed, the quality of speeches in Stage 3 was outstanding, leaving a very difficult decision for the adjudicators. A big congratulations to Thomas (highly commended), Bintang (runner up), and Harrison (winner). Harrison will now go on to represent Kirrawee Public School in the network finals.

In week 8 Stage 3 will be attending an excursion to Hazlehurst Art Gallery to participate in the Art Fun/Art Trail program. The excursion will complement our natural disasters geography unit that we are currently studying for our theme work. Notes were sent home about this last week and permission slips and payment is due back by Friday 7th September. Narrabeen expressions of interest are due back this Wednesday 29th August. It is important that we get these back on time so that numbers and pricing can be confirmed ASAP. Following this confirmation a second note will be sent home regarding payment and permission.

Kind Regards, Mr McFadden and Mr Mahoney

SPORTS REPORT

Last Friday 24th August our zone athletics team represented Kirrawee Public School at the Sutherland Zone Athletics Carnival. After a wet start to the day all of our students tried their hardest and had a great day. Well done to all athletes on the day, and a special congratulations to Abbey and Max, who both made the final for the 100m. I must congratulate the entire team on their behaviour throughout the day, especially in conditions that were cold and wet at times, well done! Also, a big thank you to all the parents who assisted with transport and offered some great support to the team throughout the day. Your help is very much appreciated and makes the running of these days that bit easier, thank you!! Unfortunately due to the slippery conditions high jump was not ran on the day. High jump will now be ran separately at Sylvania Heights Public School on Friday 31st August. Notes will go home with those students affected. A reminder that PSSA begins again in week 8. Students who made it into teams were given notes last week and payment and permission is due back by Wednesday 5th September. Kind Regards, Mr McFadden

SUPPORT UNIT REPORT Support Unit students thoroughly enjoyed Book Week last week. They all enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters and had fun in the library at the Book Fair. We are all very proud of our PARROTS!! The costumes were made by Mrs Walkerden and the ladies looked amazing. Thank you very much for the support you have given to our Slice drive. Unfortunately it has had to be postponed due to medical issues. We will advise of a new date. Support Unit Staff
