Knights Record July 2013 It is very disturbing to hear about the recent ruling to allow over-the-counter access to emergency contraception in the United States. Last month, a federal judge ordered the federal government to make the Plan B “morning-after” pill available to girls of any age without a prescription. This is putting the safety of young girls at risk and is a reckless, irresponsible decision that defies common sense. Plan B One Step works by preventing ovulation or fertilization if taken within three days of sexual intercourse. In addition, it may inhibit implantation of a fertilized egg. That means the drug has the potential to act as an abortive drug, killing a human life, being that life begins at conception. Giving potentially life- ending drugs to young girls, without any oversight from medical professionals or parents, unnecessarily exposes them to risks. Plan B uses large doses of the medicine found in birth control pills. It is almost as strong as taking a whole month’s worth of a regular birth control pills all at once. The pill is labeled as a cancer-causing carcinogen, and has a risk for causing blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, and ectopic pregnancies. It also frequently causes irregular bleeding, nausea, and severe stomach pain. Will a 12-year-old girl read and understand the entire drug insert in the box before she takes the medicine? Would a young girl having stomach pain 3-5 weeks later even recognize these symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy? No studies have even been done to study the effects of Plan B on girls younger than eighteen. This decision also tramples on the rights of parents. Why do parents have to sign permission slips for kids to get their ears pierced or to go on a field trip? In New York, a teenager can’t even buy an extra-large Coke, but she has easy access to getting the morning-after pill! Drug stores have to keep minors away from cigarettes, beer, and even allergy medicine, but not abortion-causing medication. As Knights of Columbus, we are pro-life. We believe and support the Catholic Church’s moral teaching that it is not permissible to initiate or endorse treatments that have as their purpose the removal, destruction, or interference with the implantation of a fertilized egg. A procedure that prevents a fertilized egg to implant in the womb, in Catholic teaching, is no longer contraception but abortion. As Knights, we must work to change these immoral laws. We also can talk to our family, encouraging abstinence and chastity for our unmarried family members. We might also have conversations with our teens about the impact of premarital sexual activity, including contracting a sexually transmitted disease or becoming pregnant, both of which have lifelong consequences. We must try to be good and caring fathers and father-figures, so that family members facing crisis pregnancies can turn to us for love and support. We can also pray personally, with our family, and together as Knights for a country that embraces life. As we celebrate Independence Day, we entrust our nation to God’s loving care. We pray: “God our Father, You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for your glory and dwell among your people. Send your spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of h u m a n l i f e a n d t h e responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing your will. Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, patroness of our Land, grant us the courage to reject the culture of death and promote life. We ask this through Christ, Our Lord, Amen.” Happy Independence Day! Thank you, Ric Comana Grand Knight (618)239-6174 [email protected] FROM THE DESK OF THE GRAND KNIGHT MSGR. LEONARD A. It is very disturbing to hear about the recent ruling to allow over-the-counter access to emergency contraception in the United States.

Giving potentially life-ending drugs to young girls, without any oversight from medical professionals or parents, unnecessarily exposes them to risks.

Would a young girl having

stomach pain 3-5 weeks later even recognize these symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy? No studies have even been done to study the effects of Plan B on girls younger than eighteen.

This decision also tramples on the rights of parents. Why do parents have to sign permission slips for kids to get their ears pierced or to go on a field trip? HAPPY  BIRTHDAY  TO  A  SPECIAL  KNIGHT

Not very often do we get the pleasure of wishing a Brother Knight a happy 100th birthday. Alvin Christ will be celebrating his 100th birthday with his family and friends on July 6th.

Alvin was born in Engleman Township, which is near Mascoutah, Illinois, on July 6, 1913.

He is the oldest son out of nine children. His father had tuberculosis when Alvin was 4 years old, so from that age he had to help plant the potatoes and keep food on the table for his younger siblings and family. He got married in 1935 at Holy Childhood Church, and had seven children of his own.

In 1932, due to complications on the farm with hay fever, he and his family moved to Belleville, next door to the Cathedral, where he got a job working in the coolers for the Sift Company.

Alvin dedicated his life to the church and to his family. We would attend Sunday morning Mass at 7am every week without ever missing. He would also attend the Rosary in the evenings.

Alvin retired after 37 year at age 65. Once he retired, he attended daily morning mass. He would pick up milk from the farmer and bring it in to the dairy. He would cut grass and fix family and friend’s lawn mowers.

People often ask Alvin how he stays healthy and has lived so long, and his reply is “Never stop working”.

Happy Birthday Alvin from your family and all of your brother Knights!

INSURANCE  NEWS

The Knights of Columbus is truly a remarkable, one-of-a-kind organization, and our insurance program continues to show its strength and stability in spite of economic turmoil. In fact, 2012 marked the twelfth consecutive year of growth in many categories, chief among them the volume of coverage issued. This accomplishment illustrates the faith our members have in the products and services we offer to protect their families.

• During 2012, the Order issued more life insurance than ever before in our history: $8.1 billion.

• Our total insurance in force surpassed $88 billion. To put this remarkable number in perspective, consider that at the end of 2001 we stood at $42.9 billion.

• The Order introduced a Graded Premium Whole Life plan, which makes whole life coverage more “budget-friendly” than ever before. We also made improvements to the Systematic Withdrawal Options on our annuity products. Ask your agent how these additions to our portfolio can benefit you and your family.

• We finished the year with more field agents serving our members than ever before. Still, as our membership continues to grow, new agent candidates are always in demand across the U.S. and Canada. The ultimate goal is to have all of our members served by a dedicated, full-time agent.

• Our A++ (Superior) rating from A.M. Best was reaffirmed and there continues to be no more highly rated life insurer in North America.

Take p r ide i n t he succes s you r organization is having in fulfilling the vision of Father McGivney by caring for the financial security of our members and their families. Today is a great day to meet with your professional agent to discuss coverage or review your current policies. If you don’t know who he is, please visit kofc.org/findagent. You’ll be glad you did.
