Time seems to fly by more quickly each year. I would like to report on our progress and some excit- ing activities happening. Our on-time graduation rate has improved to average about 82% for the past four years, while the state rate is about 77% over the same time period. While this improvement is good, we have a long way to go. With the new state minimum credit requirements moving up to 24 (class of 2019), we will continue to look for ways to increase academic success for more stu- dents. I ask for your support and patience as we enter State testing season in full force in the next few weeks. Your student may appear to be a bit more stressed than usual as they take the new Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium tests. Washington is one of 23 states participating in the SBAC tests in Math and English/Language Arts. Although passing the SBAC test is not required for juniors to graduate, there are some distinct advantages for juniors to do well. One advantage is all state colleges are using the SBAC tests as free college placement tests for the class of 2016, 2017 and 2018. Readiness for college-level coursework will be based on their scores on the 11th grade Smarted Balanced assessment. Sophomores will take the SBAC Eng- lish/Language Arts test in May. The 10th grade students are required to meet a cut-score as a part of graduation requirements. The testing schedule is noted in the upper left corner of this newsletter. One of the best parts of my job is getting to attend events that show student talents outside the classroom. Recently I saw spring concerts in choir and instrumental music as well as the musical Bye Bye Birdie. I was also impressed by the Pass In Review presentation by our award winning NJROTC program. Finally, our Robotics Team and the Termi-Knighter robot recently finished first in a district competition in Auburn. I look forward to spring sports and many program events in the next couple of months. I hope the content of this newsletter is helpful to you. Spring sports are in full swing, and there are many more upcoming events on the calendar. I look forward to seeing you at a school event soon. This spring, the Smarter Balanced assessments will be replacing the existing tests in math and reading in our state.

The Smarter Balanced Assessment is a new test based on more rigorous standards and is not comparable to the Measurement of Student Performance (MSP) or High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE). The scores from the new assessment will provide a new baseline. Because the new test is measuring higher standards, fewer students are ex-pected to meet this new standard. This does not mean that students or schools are doing worse than before; only that we have a new baseline.

We are committed to continuing to work with our staff to provide them the necessary tools, curriculum and pro-fessional development necessary to meet these standards. This may include updating curriculum that aligns closely to the standards.

  • Key Club News

    PNW District 66th Annual Convention

We had a great group of 24 students attend this year’s convention at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. They joined over 2,000 students from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Canada to celebrate their ac-complishments, take workshops on their upcoming lead-ership roles, and make plans to serve even more in the upcoming year. They came back exhausted, but ready to make an impact in their community.

    “Caring, Our Way of Life”

This is the Key Club Motto and the students are deter-mined to live it. We show our caring in a number of ways. We’re inclusive. All are welcome and quickly be-come part of the Key Club family. We love to serve. This year we had a goal of “6 for 60” (6 students having 60 service hours) by March. We had 8, with one student having over 100 hours! Wow, that’s dedication. We’re thoughtful. This year we created Valentine’s cards to deliver to a local assisted-living facility to bring smiles to the faces of the residents. We also help to spread Christ-mas cheer by creating “choirs” at each of the doors of Fred Meyer while helping the Bremerton Kiwanis bell ring for the Salvation Army. During that time period, the most money was raised for the Salvation Army in the whole season!

    Membership

Students are welcome to join throughout the year. Be-cause we are a national organization, there are dues of $16. If your student is interested in joining, they can pick up a form from Ms. Irish in the Career Center.

    Our Great Supporters

We couldn’t do half of what we do without the great support of the members of the Bremerton Kiwanis. They come to our meetings, chaperone our events, provide transportation, and make sure we always have great snacks! They lead us by example and are always there to encourage us and build us up. We are so thankful for their love and support!

    Teens and Drugged Driving

All parents worry about the safety of their teen behind the wheel even when driving conditions are perfect. While most parents edu-cate their children about the consequences of driving under the in-fluence of alcohol, the topic of drugged driving isn’t always part of the conversation.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among young people aged 16 to 19.” 1 When a teen’s “relative lack of driving experience is combined with the use of marijuana or other substances that affect cognitive and motor abilities, the results can be tragic.”2

    Here’s what you should know:

In Washington State, driving under the influence (DUI) refers to operating a vehicle while affected by alcohol, drugs, or both. This applies to both legal and illegal drugs, including prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs.3

Our state maintains a Zero Tolerance policy for the presence of any THC in the bloodstream of drivers under age 21

Underage drivers with any THC found in their system face DUI charges

For adults over age 21, the legal limit for THC is 5.0 ng per mL of whole blood 4

Adults over age 18 with a medical marijuana prescrip-tion are not exempt from DUI for THC blood levels at or above the 5.0 ng per mL limit. 5

After using marijuana, impairments include subjective sleepiness, distortion of time and distance, vigilance, and loss of coordination and can persist for up to 24 hours after consumption. 6

In a comprehensive study on unsafe driving by high school stu-dents, 30 percent of seniors reported driving after drinking heav-ily or using drugs, or riding in a car in which the driver had been drinking heavily or using drugs, at least once in the prior two weeks.7

    Here’s what you can do:

Talk with your child early and often about the negative conse-quences of drugged driving

Set clear expectations for safe and sober driving

Know who your child is spending time with and where they are.

Check in with the responsible adult where your child is visiting.
