Junior Mechanical Engineer: Flex|N|Gate Internship: May 2006-April 2007• Organized laboratory testing programs for automotive parking brakes and hinges

including static and durability testing and vehicle data-acquisition• Performed manufacturing trials to investigate manufacturing-related failures• Aided in the development of an electric parking brake actuator• Acted as the primary contact with the Ford-Oakville Assembly Plant

Engineering Intern: Astra Aero Summer of 2005• Worked in a small team to redesign a composite aero-structure• Aided in optimizing the vibration characteristics and meeting the weight target

of the structure while meeting manufacturing-driven goals• Used tools such as Pro/Mechanica for FEA of the structure and Pro/Engineer

to produce solid models, drawings and to design tooling

Owner and Chief Carpenter: KloppCo Carpentry Part-time: 2002-2004• Supervised and assisted two employees in the construction of decks, fences,

patios and flooring• Managed finances, billing, marketing and procurement of material

VOLUNTEERAND EXTRA-CARRICULAR

Technical Director: University of Toronto Formula SAE July 2007-2008• Responsible for coordinating all design and manufacturing activities of a 25-

student team which designs and builds a formula-style racecar• Collaborated with the business leader to develop and maintain the budget• Worked with another student to prepare a structural equivalence report to show

that a carbon fibre monocoque chassis design met all safety requirements

Manufacturing Director: University of Toronto Formula SAE 2005-2007• Responsible for all team contact with manufacturing-related sponsors including

machine shops, material suppliers and tooling suppliers• Implemented QA programs such as dye penetrant inspection of critical parts

• Found new sponsorship valued at 10% of the team’s annual budget

Drivetrain Department Head: University of Toronto Formula SAE 2004-2008• Managed a team a three to design, manufacture and maintain racecar drivetrain• Designed and built a custom, on-track adjustable differential• Wrote a vehicle dynamics model to determine the effects of the differential• Aided in track testing and set-up of the car• Developed analysis tools to estimate dynamic (shock) loading of driveline parts• Preformed mechanical and material testing to benchmark existing designs, val-

idate new designs and determine causes of previous design failures• Applied tools such as CAD, linear and non-linear FEA and design standards

Technology Chair: Dave Johnson and Tom Smith Campaigns 2003 and 2004• In charge of all computer and telecom systems for two political campaigns• Managed access to the party’s proprietary and confidential voter database

Machinist: University of Toronto Formula SAE 2003-2004• Aided in the construction of a racecar by fabricating, machining and welding

various components

Selected Samples of Professional Work

OptimumG

Figure 1: At OptimumG, I was involved in instrumenting several vehicles, both racecars and production cars, using a multitude of sensors including wheel force trans-ducers, slip angle sensors and inertial platforms.

Figure 2: I lead the team that developed a tire force and moment data visualizationand modeling tool. I was also involved in several tire testing projects, both rig testingin a laboratory and on-vehicle testing on a proving ground.

Figure 3: I have given a number of public seminars and written several articlespublished in magazines and online.

Formula SAE

Figure 4: During my time on the University of Toronto Formula SAE team, I designed, manufactured and tested an adjustable limited slip differential. This project alsoserved as my BASc Thesis topic.

Figure 5: I wrote several simulation programs in Matlab to investigate handling, ride, tire behavior and shock loading.

Figure 6: I ran a considerable amount of FEA while designing parts of the For-mula SAE car. This included analysis of complex mechanical assemblies (left) andcomposite structures (right).
