Just let us know! Children’s Book Week 22 nd - 26 th August We will be celebrating Children’s Book Week with a parade on Friday 26th August at 9.10 a.m. for all of our students in Prep to Year 6. Students are asked to carry a favourite book, dress as a story character or author. There is no need to go to a lot of trouble with an outfit - keep it simple and fun. All short-listed books are on display in the library. During Book Week the library will be open each lunchtime to help our students celebrate the joy of reading and author visits have been arranged for each class level. Reading to Children Melbourne researchers at RMIT and Melbourne University have proven what parents have intuitively known all along – ‘the more often you read to your children from an early age, the greater the positive effect on their reading and thinking skills. ''It does appear to be the case that children who are read to more often keep doing better as they age than other children,'' said Professor Guyonne Kalb. These findings send a clear message to parents, grandparents, teachers and carers that the benefits of reading, go way beyond a shared bonding experience.'' Key Findings from Professor Guyonne Kalb Research: 1. The frequency of reading to children at a young age has a direct causal effect on their schooling outcomes regardless of their family background and home-life. 2. Reading to children at age of 4 to 5 years, every day has a significant positive effect on their reading skills and cognitive skills - language, literacy and numeracy later in life. While reading to children 3-5 days per week (compared to 2 or less) has the same effect on the child’s reading skills at age 4-5 as being six months older. 3. Reading to children 6-7 days per week has the same effect as being almost 12 months older. 4. Children read to frequently at age 4-5 achieve higher scores on the Year 3 Literacy and Numeracy NAPLAN tests. 5. These differences in reading and cognitive skills are not related to the child’s family background or home environment. ..continued overleaf Term Dates 2016 Term 3 11 Jul—16 Sept Term 4 3 Oct—20 Dec Phone: 9759-6222 Fax: 9759-6211 Email: [email protected] Web: http://www.karoops.vic.edu.au SCHOOL ASSEMBLY Mon 15th August - Prep-Year 2 (This week only will be held in the mul-use room) IMPORTANT DATES - CAMPS AUGUST 2016 Thursday 11th August 2017 Prep—Story time Friday 12th August Jeans for Genes day (wear your jeans with your school uniform for a gold coin donation) ICAS Maths Saturday 13th August Working bee—CANCELLED Monday 15th August KPA meeting—7pm Tuesday 16th August GATEWAYS Year 4 Coach Approach Friday 19th August District Athletics Competition 2017 Prep: Step Into Prep—Session 1 Monday 22nd August CURRICULUM DAY Tuesday 23rd August GATEWAYS Author visit – Prep-Year 4 Friday 26th August Book Parade—Prep-Year 6 9:10am in the Gym Author visit—Years 5 & 6 Karoo Calendar JEANS FOR GENES DAY : FRIDAY 12th AUGUST 2016 This is not a free dress day, but students may wear their denim jeans with their school shirts and school jumpers for a gold coin donation.
