Our EYFS provision aims to provide:

• quality and consistency, so that every child achieves their full potential

• a secure foundation through learning and development opportunities which are

planned around the needs and interests of each individual child and are

assessed and reviewed regularly

• partnership working between practitioners and with parents and/or carers

• equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice, ensuring that every child is included and supported

We are registered by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) which inspects all care and education provision. Copies of inspection reports are available on request for parents and carers and online at www.ofsted.gov.uk.

Parents

Parents and carers are important members of the setting with valuable knowledge and information to share about their children. By sharing information, you can make sure that the setting provides the most appropriate care and education for your child.

We encourage you to become involved in all aspects of the setting. We also keep you up-to-date and involved by holding Coffee Mornings, Parent Conference Mornings, inviting you to assemblies, school trips etc. Newsletters and a parent’s notice board are used

Page 9:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

to share the latest information about class and whole school activities.

Staff

Our EYFS Department complies with regulatory requirements and has the appropriate number of qualified staff for the children attending. We provide in-service training and staff development opportunities to continually update their skills, knowledge and experience. Due to our commitment to safeguarding children , we follow a carefully structured recruitment and selection procedure. All new staff must undergo a range of security checks including criminal record disclosures, reference and qualification checks and successfully complete a probation period.

Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the statutory framework for young children’s learning and development from birth. We provide a broad range of challenging and stimulating play activities, both indoors and outdoors, that promote children's overall development. Individual planning enables each child to meet his/her personal goals and we take into account any special educational needs.

There are seven areas of learning and development that must shape educational programmes in early years’ settings. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

These three areas, the prime areas, are:

Page 10:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

• communication and language

• physical development

• personal, social and emotional development

The children are also support children in four specific areas, through which the

three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:

• literacy

• mathematics

• understanding the world

• expressive arts and design

Communication, Language and Literacy

Ideas to Support your children

Taken from Sounds and Letters: Phonics information for parents and carers with children in reception classes, The National Strategies (2009)

Speaking and Listening

Make time to listen to your child talking – as you meet them from school, as you go home, in the supermarket as you shop, at meal

Page 11:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

times, bath times, and bedtimes – any time!

Switch off the TV, radio and mobile phones – and really listen!

Show that you are interested in what they are talking about – look at your child, smile, nod your head, ask a question or make a response to show that you really have been listening.

Make a collection of different toy creatures – for example, a duck, a snake, an alien, say the sound it might make as you play together.

Listen at home – Listen to the sounds around the home. Can your child tell you what sounds they heard, in the order in which they heard them?

Play-a-tune – and follow me! Make or buy some simple shakers, drums and beaters, then play a simple tune and ask your child to copy. Have fun!

Use puppets and toys to make up stories or retell known ones. Record your child telling the story and play it back to them.

Writing

Magnetic letters -Buy magnetic letters for your fridge, or for use with a tin tray. Find out which letters have been taught – have fun finding these with your child and place them on the magnetic surface.

Making little words together -Make little words together, for example, it, up, am, and, top, dig, run, met, pick. As you select the letters, say them aloud: ‘a-m – am’, ‘m-e-t – met’.

Breaking words up -Now do it the other way around: read the word, break the word up and move the letters away, saying: ‘met – m-e-t’.

Don’t forget the writing box!

Spelling is harder than reading words – praise, don’t criticise. Little whiteboards and pens, and magic boards, are a good way for

Page 12:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

children to try out spellings and practise their handwriting.

Reading

Read in short friendly sessions (10-15 min a day) – full of praise and encouragement.

Make it a relaxed and enjoyable time.

Handle books in a caring way.

Practice reading using picture clues.

Ask questions about the cover, the book and the pictures. What might happen next?

After the children have heard the story several times, they will retell it from memory.

Teach lots of nursery rhymes – each one tells a different story.

Enjoy and share books together – make sure your child can read the print and see the pictures. Buy or borrow books that will fire their imagination and interest. Read and reread those they love best.

Make time to read with your child throughout their time in school – PLEASE continue reading to your child, even when they are reading independently. This is very important – your child needs to practise their reading skills every day, and needs the support of an interested adult. Grandparents, older brothers or sisters can help, too.

Let them see you reading – grown-ups can share their magazines about their favourite sport or hobby.

Read with your child – ask your child to attempt unknown words, using their phonic skills and knowledge. Make sure they blend all through the word.

Talk about the meaning of the book, too – take time to talk about what is happening in the book, or things that they found really

Page 13:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

interesting in an information book. Discuss the cover, characters and important events. Ask them their views.

Explain the meaning of words (vocabulary) that your child can read but may not understand, for example, flapped, roared.

Teach your child some action rhymes – ‘Heads, shoulders, knees and toes’, ’Here we go round the mulberry bush’, ‘We all clap hands together'. Use CDs of nursery rhymes to sing along to.

Read simple rhyming books together – leave out a rhyming word now and then, and see if your child can work out the missing word. If not, you say it.

Borrow or buy the best books you can to share with your child. Libraries and bookshops can advise you of the most popular books.

Add sound effects when reading a story and encourage your child to join in.

COVID 19 amendments

The school will be implementing a Recovery Curriculum with a stronger focus on PSED to support the children transitioning back to school.

Attendance

At Northwold Primary School we are committed to supporting our families to enable their children to attend school regularly. Attendance is statutory and poor attendance is closely tracked by the school. Failing to attend has a direct impact on your child’s learning and outcomes.

Page 15:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

Children are expected to attend school every day. If your child is unwell on any given day, please call the office to let the school know. If the school does not hear from you, we will call home following our safeguarding procedures. If you do not provide a reason for your child’s absence, it will be marked as unauthorised.

Please be reminded that the school is unable to authorise holiday within the term time. If taken, this will be unauthorised and may result in a fine of £60 per parent per child.

Forest School

Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.

Forest School is an inspirational process that offers regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees. (Forest School Association, 2012)

By engaging in regular short achievable tasks in a wood land environment participants have the opportunity to develop intrinsic motivation, sound emotional and social skills.

Children who use real life tools, play, learn boundaries of behaviour, both physically and social, establish and grow in confidence, self-esteem and become self-motivated.

What do we do?

We get ready to go in our waterproof gear and make our way to Springfield Park or Abney Park. We find our “base camp”, remind ourselves of the Forest School rules and then take part in motivating Forest School activities with Mr. Howie, the school’s Forest School

Page 16:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

teacher

We assess how young children are learning and developing by observing them frequently. We believe that parents know their children best and we ask them to contribute to assessment, sharing information about what their children like to do at home and how parents are supporting development.

Settling in

You will be informed of a home –visit prior to your child starting at the school. We want your child to feel happy and safe with us. During the settling-in period you will meet your child’s key worker and they will be able to support you if you are feeling anxious and answer any questions you may have. An on entry assessment will take place within 6 weeks of your child attending the school. This will inform planning, provision and practice with regard to your child’s developmental needs.

Daily routine

Our setting believes that care and education are equally important in the experiences which we offer children. The routines and activities that make up the session/day in the setting are provided in ways that:

help each child to feel that she/he is a valued member of the setting

ensure the safety of each child

help children to gain from the social experience of being part of a group

provide children with opportunities to learn and help them to value learning.

Every day is carefully planned so that children can take part in a variety of child-chosen and adult-led activities. These take account of children's changing energy levels and interests throughout the day.

Page 17:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

Outdoor activities contribute to children's health, their physical development and their knowledge of the world around them. Messy play is an integral part of the offer at Northwold Primary School.

We encourage children to be as independent as possible and this includes toileting. Please let us know if there are any issues in this regard so that a support plan can be put in place.

Your child’s ‘special book’ celebrates his/her experiences over their time in the nursery. It will show the journey in their learning, the friends that they have made and the activities that they enjoy doing.

Your child will have a designated Key Worker who will observe them closely during play and guided activities. These observations will inform future planning of activities that will support your child’s developmental needs and requirements. We will collect evidence of your child’s development in their ‘Special book’ in order to track their progress made. Although the book usually stays at school, it belongs to your child and it is available to you to view and discuss with your child. Inside the ‘special book’ we include:-

Photographs capturing moments in your child’s learning, their interests and explorations. We will annotate what they say about their experiences

Observations – these are quick notes of learning that has happened

Collections of work – these are all the creations that your children have made with an observation to explain what your child said or did.

Extended Observations – detailed observations that give a snapshot of learning that children have initiated themselves with an annotation of how to respond to meet the child’s needs

Page 18:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

We want to work in partnership with you so please share with your child’s key worker any developmental progress you have witnessed at home. So much happens so quickly! We can share the excitement and pleasure in their learning together.

Mealtimes

Snacks and meals are a shared activity when everyone eats together. We plan the menus for snacks and meals so that they provide the children with healthy and nutritious food taking into account all dietary requirements. The weekly menus are shared with parents. If you child has an allergy or additional dietary needs please inform us as soon as possible.

( Please refer to additional information below regarding adjustments made due to COVID 19 re-arrangements)

Safe- Guarding

We believe that children learn best when they are healthy, safe and secure, when their individual needs are met.

All staff understand the safeguarding policy and procedures, and have up to date knowledge of safeguarding issues. Training is constantly made available to enable staff to identify signs of possible abuse and neglect at the earliest opportunity, and to respond in a timely and appropriate way.

These may include:

• significant changes in children's behaviour

• deterioration in children’s general well-being

Page 19:   · Web viewOnline Safety training for children (3) 14/09/20. 18th Jeans for Genes (Children wear jeans with school jumpers and bring £1 to support charity) (4) 21/09/20. 24th

• unexplained bruising, marks or signs of possible abuse or neglect

• children’s comments which give cause for concern

• any reasons to suspect neglect or abuse outside the setting,

If you child has been injured at home please inform members of staff.

Behaviour

We aim to work with the children to enable them to develop self-discipline and self-esteem in a safe environment of mutual respect and encouragement. We promote positive behaviour and have developed strategies for dealing with unwanted behaviour. We work closely with parents to support children who may be demonstrating inappropriate behaviour, sharing strategies and providing additional one-to-one time for the child if they are in need of extra emotional support.

To promote positive behaviour we have implemented the following.

We have developed some simple rules for the children. These are explained to everyone. We involve the children in helping to agree rules wherever possible.

All adults in the setting ensure that the rules are applied consistently, so that children have the security of knowing what to expect and learning right from wrong.

All staff provide a positive role model for the children with regard to friendliness, care and courtesy. Modelling polite manners such as saying “please” and “thank you”.

Staff in the setting praise and encourage desirable behaviour such as kindness, turn taking and willingness to share.

We will take positive steps to avoid a situation in which children receive adult attention only in return for undesirable behaviour.

Nutrition

Our philosophy is that eating should be a relaxed, happy and social occasion. In our nursery the children eat altogether in the dinner hall. We use mealtimes as an opportunity to develop and encourage children's eating and social skills.

The children are taught to wash their hands before snack and any meal. Sweets, crisps etc. are not allowed in pack lunches and children are not allowed to eat on the playground. Please do not provide any foods in your child's lunch box that contain nuts or may have traces of nuts to safeguard other children who have a nut allergy.

Please inform the school if your child has an allergy

Collection Procedure

The school must know who is collecting the child each day and who is not allowed contact (where appropriate).

If another adult is to collect the child, the setting should be informed in writing, the day before if possible.

We will ensure no child leaves unsupervised

If you are unavoidably detained and cannot arrive on time to collect your child, please telephone to inform us. We reserve the right to charge for extra time that your child stays at the setting.

If your child remains uncollected, we will phone all contact numbers after 15 minutes and if we cannot make contact the police or local authority social care for children will be contacted

Please inform the school of any change in personal information details for example, change of address, contact details etc.
