ON THE COVER: AdvancedDistributors Tech Session on June 2brought in a nice range of classics thatincluded the white 1960 MGA in theforeground.

You’ve probably already read the handwritten notereproduced here. So what’s the back-story?

The radio in the Miata has been hissing for a coupleyears, and the non-glare coating on the time/stationdisplay was now peeling off. Replace it, fix it, or livewith it? Living with it was my first choice. (It alwaysis.) But finally the static and not being able to read the timegot under my skin.

Fix it? It is a 22-year-old radio with a cassette player. No eight track but it’sstill solid state and unlikely to be helped by gentle ministrations with ahammer and vice grips.

So maybe replace it. But with what? One of those new gadgets with theTokyo-by-night displays, a USB input, high- and low-pass filters, 300 Altoid-sized buttons, a detachable faceplate, and MP3/WMA playback? No, I don’tthink so.

Why not get an OEM replacement? Now you’re talking. Not only will iteliminate the new gadget learning curve, but also the Miata will score muchbetter at Pebble Beach with the stock unit. But where can you get one?

I have to admit I didn’t even call Mazda. And eBaywasn’t too helpful. How about Craig’s List? Nothinghere in MSP so I went to SearchTempest and it foundone on Craig’s List in Maryland. No picture and a $20price tag. Can you trust a Craig’s List poster?Especially one a thousand miles away? Nothingventured, nothing gained. I sent him a twenty-dollarbill and one of those pre-paid mailing cartons. Andthen I worried. Good-bye $20? Ciao mailing carton? Then the carton arrived at my house. What was in it?Two pounds of Radio Shack trash?

No. What was there was a nice-looking Miata radio.Hidden at the bottom of the carton was an envelopethat almost ended up in the recycling. The envelopecontained the note that you’ve already read plus a $20bill and a $10 bill.

Just when you think there’s nobody in the world butTom Petters/Denny Hecker wannabes, thensomebody (Mike Wagner in this case) shows you thatthere are a lot of decent folk out there.

P.S. The radio worked great, the $20 bill is on its wayback to Maryland, and the $10 bill will be in thecollection plate next Sunday.

Let me begin by thanking some very important people who made

this event a reality: Terry Tobin, Chris Peterson, Alex Donaldson,

Tom Moerke, Jay Griggs (the airport manager), Heather Hegarty

and the Amery Girl Scout troop, Bill Lozito, Don Gettinger, Dale

Sanders, Tony Viau, Geoff and Giorgio Rossi, Ioannis Nompelis,

Bob Mortenson, Jim Klein, and all the Hot Flag Girls. Thanks also

go to all the drivers and spectators who stepped up to help with

chalking cones, corner working, and clean up. Sorry I didn't note

the names of everyone else that helped, but I appreciate you all!

Without the hard work of these dedicated volunteers, this event

simply could not happen.

This year, for the first time, we used a “leader board” to display timing results rightaway. This proved to be a big hit. Also the course was slightly longer than inprevious years. A few extra seconds per run added up to many minutes by the endof the day, which limited drivers to three runs each.

For me, the most important result of the day is that everyone stayed in control in thebraking and cool down zone. This was the tenth running of this event, and for thefirst time ever there were ZERO reports of trouble after the finish line. THANKYOU DRIVERS FOR KEEPING SAFETY NUMBER ONE!!!

Hats off to Alan Halverson, who earned Fastest Time of Day honors whipping his2005 Lotus Elise through the autocross course in just 55.88 seconds. Nice driving,Alan! Fastest Vintage Car goes to Jeremy Fohrenkamm who was hot on Alan's tailat 56.89 and continues to impress with his 36-year-old Triumph Spitfire. Aj Mehtawins the Top Speed prize, blasting his 2006 Corvette Z-06 past the finish line at 136MPH on his last run. Way to put the hammer down, Aj! Top speed for a vintageforeign car went to Jay Gallentine in a 1990 Lotus Esprit SE at 104 MPH.

The “Continuous Improvement” award is shared by JeremyFohrenkamm, Phil Ethier, Charles Kim, Andy Burrington,Alan Nemitz, Tyler Hoffman, Don Gettinger, Ryan Buck,Dave Kemp, Jay Silverberg, Art Gutierrez, Kurt Schroeder,Mitch Steinhoff, Patrick Adee, Bryan Carlson, AaronNielson, Matt Schaffer, Brandon, Flesher, Steve Rixen, DeanBorris, Joe Sarych, Eileen Wetzel, Jason Taylor, Kim Crotty,Jeff Ayers, Gary Hamlin, Jay Gallentine, Dick Hebl, TerryTobin, Mitch Oman, and Greg and Suzanne Willodson, all ofwhom stayed “in the red” on the leader board by going faster(and/or cleaner) every successive time they hit the course. Not an easy feat as the temperatures rose in the afternoon, decreasing engine performance, especially for the forcedinduction engines.

68 driver/car combinations made a total of 195 starts. Thatincludes several instructor runs, but not the “Girl Scout FunRuns” right after lunch. Every driver who stayed all day gotto make three timed runs.

Thanks again to everyone who helped out and smiled back atme all day. I have the time of my life running these events, andI love you all dearly. Especially the hot flag girls.

Yours in Speed,Tom

For those of you Porsche, Fiat and Citroën drivers not familiar

with British Car Week, it originated some 15 or twenty years ago

based on a Peter Egan column in which he lamented not seeing

any old sports cars on the road anymore.

Even though Egan was specifically referring to bathtub Porsches, the British carcommunity took up the challenge and has tried to get as many of its cars out on theroad as possible during a week in late May.

It’s been pretty much a local event with some national cheerleaders, chief amongthem Barry Harrison. This year Harrison decided to make it a national event in HotSprings, Arkansas. Among those attending this first national semi-intermarqueevent were Orrin McGill and Joe Bisanz from the Minnesota Triumphs club. Theydrove down in their TR6s.

Orrin reports that the organizers deserve nothing but praise for putting on a verygood show. In addition, the local club was very helpful and friendly and thesponsors were well represented, Moss had three of their guys there, alone. Theconcourse d’ elegance was held in the largest gated community in the U.S., “HotSprings Village” with five or more golf courses. From the gate, it was five miles tothe event. Everything along the way was groomed to the nines. Orrin also says thatthe roads of Arkansas are made for sports cars and there was no lack of curves topower through.

The 2013 event is already being planned.

Most of the 25+ cars at the Advanced Distributors event were

MGs. More MGAs than I’ve seen in one place before, but also

MGBs, Midgets, and one YA sedan and an MGC/GT coupe.

InterMarque interlopers included a Spitfire, a Mk II Jag, a Lotus

Elan, a Miata, and a couple modern lumps.

Jeff started the tech session by saying he didn’t get a sheet printed up because aretaining wall collapsed a week ago. Ain’t the country wonderful? If he had hadtime to put together a handout, here are some things that would have been listedunder the heading, Little Things Most People Don’t Check:

• Manifold bolts. Your mixture will be too lean if they’re not torqued down.

• Flange bolts on the carbs. Torque them once a year.

• Fuse boxes. They will corrode. Jeff removes them, dips them in Tarn-X silverpolish, and then rinses and replaces them.

• Corrosion on electric fuel pump connections. This is particularly a problemon MGBs and other cars on which these things are hidden underneath andsubject to road spray. If the pump isn’t getting enough voltage, it will overheatand time out. Jeff has a neat tweezers with a file on the inner face that he usesto clean off the inside of spade connections.

One other tech tip I got before heading off to coffee and doughnuts: Those orangesilicone gaskets you buy to stop oil leaks are 50/50 at best even with sealant. Thickcork is best. Oh one more: If there’s an electrical connection that is crimped and notsoldered, it will corrode. Don’t blame Lucas for your crummy connections.

The purpose of a British Car & MotorcycleDisplay (I wasn’t able to get any Britmotorcycles to commit this year) in ourMinnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games isto show visitors to the Fair, the kinds of carsand bikes that they might see, or have seenin the past, in Scotland that have a UKheritage. The cars present this year thatmight have been seen the most in years pastare the Land Rovers & my Morris Minor. Most farmers and crofters, if they couldafford one, would have had a Land Rover.Morris Minors were ubiquitous in Scotland(and all over the world). Next year, the Fair &Games will be on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Wehope to keep it on the first Saturday in Mayindefinitely as that was the traditional datewhen the Fair was at Macalester for 31 yearsand is etched in many people’s minds.

It was billed as a Solar Celebration, but it was actually aretirement party for QC’s most valuable employee. No, not Mark Brandow or Randy Byboth or any of theother mechanics. We’re talking really important. ValWallrich — front office impresario, your first contact at theCoaches, soother of ruffled feathers, and first-name buddyof every new and used car part purveyor in the universe.

Highlights of the Solar Celebration included electric carsand rides up and down in a scissors lift (to view the solararray on QC’s roof). Highlights of the retirement partyincluded a Wuollets cake, Sebastian Joe’s ice cream, andmuch good humor.
