The date has been set for the 2014InterMarque Spring Kick-Off. It willtake place on Saturday May 10th. It willagain be held in Osseo, MN. Thiscoming year, we plan on having onlyone kind of weather instead of all thekinds of weather, like we had last year.

Last Saturday, the InterMarque Councilmet at the Square Peg and made somepreliminary decisions about the event.

The poster design is in process and theevent date has been set with Osseo.

For 2014 it looks like we are going to goback to parking by the individual clubs. Each club that contributes $100 will

get a designated parking area as well

as a trophy for their Marque. There

will be a best in show trophy as well asthe individual Marques trophies. Thetrophies will be voted by ballot by eachof the show participants, with onevoting ballot going to each showentrant.

One thing that I would like to do is visitsome of the other clubs meetings, thatwe currently have low participationfrom and promote our event. I wouldappreciate any input on clubs to visitand people to get in touch with aboutmaking a presentation about the showto their members. So, if you know ofany names and clubs I could visit, besure to let me know via e-mail. Pleasesend me the club name, a contact, a

phone number or e-mail, and when themeetings take place. I will take it fromthere.

So, does anyone have any contacts withthe Miata Club? the MetropolitanClub? the DeLorean Club? theAmphicar Club? (and no, I don’t expecta lot of rain) or whatever vintageforeign clubs that are out there?

If you wish to contact me, my e-mail [email protected].

The next Council meeting is onSaturday December 14th at 9:30. It is atthe Peg, where the elite meet to eat.

Cheers,John

25th NationalBorgwardOwners’ Clubmeet SEPTEMBER 25-29 GEORGETOWN, CA,Article and photos by Ron Engle

The 25th National Borgward Owners’ Club meet was held

September 25th to 29th in Georgetown, CA, with a rally to

Murphys, CA, where for the first time the Ironstone Concours

d’Elegance had a special class for Borgward automobiles. Monica

Borgward from Germany, the daughter of Carl F.W. Borgward who

died in 1963, was the special guest of honor.

With plenty of spare parts in the trunk, Barbara and I set out in our 1960Borgward Isabella Coupé for the long journey to California. We decided todrive straight across Minnesota through the upper middle of South Dakota onUS 212, an extremely lonely but very good road, to Spearfish. Cruising at 60– 65 mph, there was no need for an Interstate nor to overwork the 53 year old1.5 liter Borgward engine. On the second day we went south throughWyoming to Evanston and spent the third night in Lovelock, Nevada, in aquestionable1 cent Casino. With four on the tree, the Borgward hummed overDonner Pass and then downhill all the way to Auburn, near Sacramento.

We passed through old Placerville in the gold mining region of the Foothills ofthe Sierra Nevada Mountains – stunning landscape with perfect weather. InGeorgetown, we met up with the Borgward people. It was time to examineeach other’s cars and for trunks to open and spare parts to be traded. But, wait, don’t panic, my rear left tire looks low. Sure enough, but at 7:00 am sharp thenext morning the only tire shop for miles let customers wait while with gustothey raised the swing axle and fixed the tire on a marque they had never heardof before.

Highlights of the trip included avisit to Paul Thomasson’s

25th National Borgward Owners’ Club meet CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5

The Borgward group caravanned to Paul Thomasson’sforested property, where Paul had prepared a BBQ lunch forforty. It was time to enjoy his “car barn,” Borgwards, and hislatest project, the restoration of Jim Cassidy’s 1957Borgward race car – a highlight of the meet. Cassidy, whopassed away years ago, affectionately named his “BremenBucket” after the city in Germany where Borgwards weremanufactured.

Jim Cassidy, in El Paso, Texas, built the “Bremen Bucket”from a wrecked 1957 Borgward Isabella Combi StationWagon in 1959-60. Cassidy modified the 1.5 liter Borgwardengine adding double carburetion and molded an allaluminum body on part of the original Borgward chassis, which when finished looked much like the Borgward RSRennsport that Borgward used in Formula II racing. The“Bremen Bucket” reached a speed of 130 mph (208 km) andCassidy raced the car throughout the Western Unites States.Unfortunately, most of the car’s original upper body waslater destroyed. But thanks to Paul Thomasson’s dedicationand hard work, he has resurrected and restored the body toits original condition.

The next day we rallied on a twisting, turning back road7,000 ft. into the High Sierra Mountains to Wright’s Lake. It

was a rugged all day 100 mile rally and a real test drive forthe Borgward caravan, especially dodging the loggingtrucks. On our return, we appropriately ate at a GermanRestaurant near Georgetown. The Wiener Schnitzel wasenormous and the waitresses all spoke German.

On Friday we rallied to Murphys, a wonderful old goldmining town, with a three block main street filled with winetasting rooms (we counted 18 in the first two blocks!) andsmall shops. Murphys is in Calaveras County, so there areplenty of frogs in town. After settling into ouraccommodations, it was time to hang out in the parking loteating cheese and crackers and drinking wine that Hans andChau Bruckler traditionally provide. Last chance to polishthe Borgward before the big show.

Saturday morning all thirteen Borgwards headed for themain event – the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance, on thegrounds of the Ironstone Winery. For the first time, therewas a special class for Borgward automobiles. Each entrywas given a carrying case with Ironstone glasses engravedwith an automobile, and a bottle of wine. A beautifulenvironment, exciting automobiles, and an antique trailerclass that was most impressive. The placement for theBorgward class alongside a lake with shade trees could not

have been more idyllic. Klaus Tietze ’s 1958 Coupé fromCanada was selected as Best in Class and three of theBorgwards received an Award of Merit, including RandySchultheis’s 1960 Coupé, Ralf Koenigshoven’s Borgwardsedan, and the Minnesota 1960 Coupé.

The morning after the BOC farewell banquet, Barbara and Ionce again hit the road. We decided on the return route tocross the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Lake Tahoe and headnorth on a desert road to I 80 in Nevada. After Elko, inRawlins, WY, we heard that a big snow storm was expected inthe north, so we continued on through Nebraska. We stoppedin Kimball and the lady at the Nebraska Tourist Agency put aphoto of the Borgward on their Facebook page.

Home at last in Minnetrista. After 4,200 miles(6,800 km), it is time to change the oil and greasethe water pump. But I’ll be dreaming of drivingthe Borgward up Ice House Road in the HighSierras for some time to come.

Illustration from a ’59 Triumph brochure captures the excitement!

MY WEEKEND AT THEWAUMANDEEHILLCLIMBSEPT. 20–22, 2013Article by Andy LindbergPhoto by Dan Buchen

On Friday, September 20, the 20% chance of rain drizzled on us

90% of the way from Point Douglas Park to Nelson, Wisconsin. Not

an auspicious start for my first appearance as a hillclimb contender.

Last year I was a corner worker without a car old enough to qualify.

As I looked around for a car last winter, one of my considerations

was that it had to be ’83 or older so the Healey club would let me

enter this year. The ‘59/’60 TR3A not only got me comfortably under

the age cut-off but well into the elderly quartile of entrants.

So, dodging raindrops, I drove down with a Triumph TR convoy, one each ofa 3, a 4 and a 6. If you’ve ever ridden with the Triumphs, you know that erectionof the hoods (that’s Brit-speak for putting up convertible tops) is a last resort— to be undertaken only if animals are marching two-by-two. Or if spouses arepresent.

The drizzle was done by the time we arrived in Nelson for the obligatory stopat the Nelson Cheese Factory. After cheese curds and ice cream cones we madethe obligatory Triumph stop at the Nelson liquor store. Then it was offWisconsin 35 and onto the county roads for a scenic and tire-squealingconclusion to our journey.

Arriving at the Waumandee House, we checked to make sure the bartender wason duty and checked out the bunkhouse we were sharing with four other TRenthusiasts. The bunkhouse was much nicer than its name would imply.Recently redone, it had a shower and a big-screen TV. The only problems withit were the bunkbeds, whose top bunks are Mt. Everest challenges to 66-year-olds.

The evening began at Suncrest Gardens Farm for the best pizza in the upperMidwest. Bob Jensen, a gourmand’s gourmet, drove his MGA down from theCities just for the pizza and left the next day before the hillclimb. The music wasgood too. Then it was back to the bunkhouse (I only got lost once) and asomewhat fitful night’s sleep interrupted by the fire pit drunks, the snoring inour cabin, and event master Tom Hazen leaving the parking lot at oh-dark-

AT LEAST I LOOKED FAST.

thirty to get the hillclimb course prepared.

Race day (time for me to strut my stuff ) dawned cold andwet from the overnight rain. Arriving at the course, wefound the pits were different than last year. Last year’s pitswere now a corn (ethanol) field, but Tom had found us anearby field from which the cows had reportedly beenmoved two weeks ago. The rain did, however, loosen upsome of the cow pies so you had to be careful where youwalked until the late morning sun solidified them. The localGirl Scouts sold breakfast goodies and semi-hot chocolatethat hit the spot on a chilly, overcast morning. Hope theymade a fortune.

Then it was off to the drivers’ meeting. As a driver this yearI listened attentively. Especially when Tom said things like,“And you could die.” Tom does a great job at these meetings. His Johnnie Cochran-inspired rules are worth the price ofadmission. (You remember Cochran from the OJ trial, “If itdoesn’t fit, you must acquit.”) Tom’s versions of thisrhyming memory device included, “One for fun, two you’redone,” for hitting cones or haybales along the course. Andfor booze it was, “Drink a beer, you’re out of here.”

The start line is a mere five miles from the finish and the pits. Not as the crow flies or the 2+ mile course runs, but on thoseroads where I got lost the night before. I got lost againbecause I missed a few of the pink arrows used to mark theroute. Everyone’s first run was untimed so there was time towave at the corner workers, admire the beautiful scenery, quake at the twenty- to thirty-foot dropoffs on your right, and plot your more serious ascent later when the stopwatchwas running. My evaluation of the course was that the mostchallenging obstacles were not the numerous corners onBlank Hill Road but the hay bales and cones designed to slowdown drivers even more. Maybe they didn’t much slowdown cars with power steering and/or rack & pinionsteering, but they were heck for me to thread my TR3through. (“Chicane” is derived from a French word meaning“out to get me.”)

No times were announced during the day and I felt prettygood about my driving. On the gas in a gear not too farremoved from the ideal one, through the chicanes as fast asmy arms could swing that 17-inch steering wheel, andaround the curves on my 165R-15 tires without launchingmyself off the precipices. I felt so good, in fact, that as Iwalked around the pits, talking to other drivers, I shared with

them my only goal for the weekend — not to get the SlowestTime of Day (aka STD) award.

This goal seemed eminently achievable. After all the TR3has gobs of torque and I’m faster than most minivan driverson exit ramps. What could go wrong? Well, on the first runafter lunch, somebody saw me hit a cone. Remember one forfun, two you’re done? It seemed to me to be prudent to notmake any more runs. And besides, my morning times weregood enough to achieve my goal of no STD. Right?

Cut forward to the awards banquet. After the broastedchicken, Tom began to hand out the awards. Everybody getsa Fastest Time of Day award for their fastest time of day, butthese FTDs are handed out in order from the STD first andon up to the really fast times of day. So Tom did a fewslowpoke jokes and then announced the winner of the “mostcontemplative driver” award. Guess who? He smiled as hehanded it to me. I didn’t smile back. My brain beat itself intoa froth of anger and embarrassment. It’s one thing for me toget an STD when I’m driving a Citroen 2CV or a SmartFortwo. But it’s an entirely different matter when I’m reallytrying in a real sports car (even if it’s a really old real sportscar). What can I blame other than myself?

I was still boiling after all the awards were handed out. (Noway I’m telling you who was faster than me.) After buryingmy sorrows in a chocolate-chip cookie, I walked over toveteran vintage racer Rich Stadther and asked him what hedid when (if?) he came in last. He said I wasn’t last, he was.The clutch on his car gave out before he made his first run. This consoled me a bit. But not much. I mean what do I tellpeople? I’m faster than a stalled car? Last year’s STDertalked to me. We decided he ’d run next year and I’d workcorners like he did this year. But I was still upset.

On Sunday, the second place finisher (second from thebottom that is) and I had breakfast together and then droveback to the Cities without squealing a tire or breaking aspeed limit once. Several weeks have now passed. Afterreflection, my plan for next year is to recruit some driversslower than me to participate. That means you. If you didn’trace, I was a heck of a lotfaster than you. We’ll seeabout next year. Considerthe gauntlet thrown.

John Engstrom called the November 9 InterMarque Councildouble-secret meeting (to which everybody had been invited)to order at 9:00 a.m. Despite claiming to be disorganized, he distributed an agenda that some attendees honored.

Item A on the agenda was Spring Kick-Off help. Clubs notrepresented at the meeting (you know who you are), we’llneed your help too.

Item B was a co-chair for the Kick-Off. Several people notpresent were nominated for this position. (A good reason foryou to attend the December 14 meeting.)

For Item C Pat Holt volunteered to be Parking Field Marshallfor the KickOff.

Item D. The KickOff is May 10, 2014 in downtown Osseo.Gorgeous weather is predicted.

Item E was trophies and Dale Martin is working on a stunningnew design.

Item F, ballots and rules, was discussed extensively and thereseems to be semi-agreement on a proposal too complicatedto be discussed here.

Items G through I were pretty much passed over for now.

Item J was involvement of other clubs. The Mercedes, Saab(SAAB?), and Miata Clubs were mentioned as possibilities.

Another issue discussed was whether the InterMarque shouldincorporate as a non-profit. Many marque clubs have donethis. Action was deferred until somebody who knows what isinvolved (maybe even a lawyer) could be consulted.

The group also discussed whether the InterMarque shouldhave a presence at the Minneapolis Auto Show. After hearingabout fifty reasons this wouldn’t work, attendees decided topursue the idea further.
