Another year, another Spring KickOff.Hard to believe I’ve been doing thisfor 21 years. What’s changed and whathas stayed the same?

One thing that has changed is thename. The first event was theInterMarque Banquet. It was held inFebruary and that, by no stretch of theimagination or global warming, qualifies as spring in Minnesota. Whilethe InterMarque piece of the originalname has survived, the banquetdisappeared when the event movedfrom the Radisson Plymouth to ComoPark four or five years ago. I considerthis a loss as there’s no longer a timefor us all to gather, even if “we”always did separate ourselves into MGtables, Triumph tables, etc., etc.

Another thing that has changed is thehost. Individual clubs used to be hosts.Minnesota Triumphs put on the firstcouple, and then it rotated among theother British clubs. Now theInterMarque chair does it, causing himor her to burn out, get divorced, become an alcoholic or die after a yearor two. John Engstrom did a great jobthis year, but he’s too nice a guy towish any of the above maladies on.Rendezvous, another big deal multi-marque get-together, rotates betweenfive or six U.S. and Canadian clubs.(Minnesota Healeys are putting it on inGrand Rapids this year. They mayhave recovered in four or five yearsand be ready to do it again.)

One more big change is the weather. Ithas never been the same from one yearto the next. And it probably never will

be so long as theevent is held inwhat passes forspring in Minnesota.

Oh yes, the cars are a bit differenttoday too. What were daily driversback then are now collector cars. Idrove a 1991 Saab 900 to see thecollector cars dragged out of storagefor that first February InterMarque. On Saturday Phil Duckert exhibited abeautiful ’91 Saab 900 SPG. (His car,by the way, is for sale, and I’mdrooling over it. Take me out of mymisery and buy it before my willpowersnaps. [email protected])

That reminds me that, of course, somethings never change. In addition to thefact that I always see a car or twelvethat brings lust to my heart, there isalso always a wonderful showing ofcars and people. Plus there’s the factthat the event has always been not tooorganized. Not disorganized mindyou, but not micro-managed either.

So some things have changed andsome things haven’t. TheInterMarque, however, rambles on.God bless it.

BLOW WIND BLOW!

I thought that I got a sunburn on Saturday, but on secondlook it turns out that it was just windburn.

Luckily there were no small children blown away, but I didnotice some of the lower horsepower cars arrived later.

Despite the wind and cold weather we had a good turnout. At 10 AM I counted 156 cars parked along the streetsas well as 14 cars in the Modern Classic Lot. I heardcomments that the turnout was smaller this year, but I hada count of 165 cars last year so, I think we were pretty closeto 2012 overall.

It seems like everyone was having a good time and all inall despite the weather, it was a good turn out. Thanks toall of you for a good event.

Thanks again to all who helped out with the event;parking volunteers, our sponsors, and the City of Osseo...it wouldn’t work out without your help!

Some of the top cars there were the MG J2 as well as somebeautiful Jaguars. The original Cobra and the replicaSS100 also seemed to draw admirers.

The three cars chosen by our resident judges were, asfollows. Gary Krukoski’s 1933 MG J2 took 1st place; MikeLynch’s Jaguar MKIX Saloon was 2nd place; and SteveDevitt’s lovely Volvo P1800 took third place.

Even though this year’s show seemed to run well, there arestill a few things that need to be tweaked for next year.

I plan on having a wrap up meeting on Saturday the 25th.First of all, I will not invite any wind for next year.

Longtime MAHC member Jim Johnson will soon begin his 60th

year as original owner of his BN-1 Austin-Healey 100. He will be

honored for upholding the marque as part of the Spring

Awakening Drive Saturday, May 4.

Jim recalled recently that he'd read about the car in magazines of the day, but firstspotted a Healey 100 at a 1953 Los Angeles air show honoring the 50th anniversaryof flight. That sighting ignited his desire to own one.

He was studying aircraft maintenance in Los Angeles after serving as a U.S. AirForce aircraft mechanic during the Korean War. The East St. Paul native and 17-year-old member of Harding High School's class of 1947 completed his airframestraining and returned to the Twin Cities looking for work. His search wasunsuccessful here, but his newly earned Air Frames & Power Plant license did helpsecure a job with the Boeing Company in Seattle. That job enabled Jim to realize hissports car dream. In summer 1954, within two months of starting work, he orderedhis Healey from Gallagher Motors, a Seattle dealership.

“My first choice for colors was red interior and black exterior. My second choicewas red and black,” Jim said. He didn't know that combination was not offeredinitially. "Years later I was told by the body shop repairing a ding in a fender thatHealey workers must have pulled an Old English White chassis off the line andrepainted it to match my color preference. They found white paint under the black,"he said.

When his new car was delivered, Jim traded in his 1952Studebaker and agreed to pay just over $2,000 as the balancedue. His 30 car payments, with interest, were about $80 amonth. He showed me copies of his trade-in and purchaseagreement, as well as original marketing pamphlets andowner materials that came with the car. The serial numberlisted on the title application is BN1L-158587.

DAILY DRIVER

Jim joined fellow employees in forming the Boeing SportsCar Club for touring, rallies, social and speed events. TheHealey continued to serve as his daily driver until the mid-1960s.

He drove the Healey to San Diego in late 1956 when hejoined Ryan Aircraft. While working in San Diego, friendsintroduced him to bicycle touring; and he began anotherlifelong passion. In 1958 he quit his job at Ryan Aircraft totake an extended bicycle tour of Europe. Enroute, he drovethe car to St. Paul and stored it.

“Except for the fender bender, Quality Coaches wentthrough the engine once and the car had regular maintenanceduring my daily driver days; but it's never been restored orreally freshened," Jim said. Since the late 1960s it has beendriven for leisure enjoyment—often years apart. “Therewere always bicycle tours, or design and homebuildingactivities that got in the way,” he said.

He noted that Steve Rixen and Curt Carlson worked hard toget it running in 2004, when MAHC celebrated his 50th yearof ownership. Among other things, they rebuilt thecarburetors, repaired and replaced part of the electrical andignition systems. The Healey has been used vary sparinglysince then. It's currently in a corner of an outbuilding/second garage at his home.

NEW CAREER

Back in the Twin Cities after his European bicyclingvacation, Jim ran into a high school chum whose familyowned Hazel Park Schwinn in St. Paul. At first he hung outthere, but soon began applying his bicycle roadside-repairexperience to assembling and repairing bikes for the shop.

Jim didn't like the repair and truing stand they were using, sohe designed modifications and added them to it. TheSchwinn salesman who called on the bike shop saw it andasked him to build another stand for the bicycle factory. Jimbuilt a second modified stand and went to Schwinn's Chicagoheadquarters to set-up and demonstrate its advantages. Thatwas the first of many orders for the stand.

Thus began his new career as the first tool designer andengineer for Park Tool Company. The firm is celebrating its50th anniversary this year as the world's largest manufacturerand supplier of bicycle tools. In addition to the original TS-1repair stand that helped establish the business, Jim designed

and had patented several tools in the company's past andcurrent catalogs.

He didn't limit his design and engineering work to tools. In1975, he bought 18 acres in Marine on the St. Croix.Weekends found him trekking the property to choose a sitefor a home of his own design. Jim did several designs andcardboard models before deciding on his favorite plan. Hequit working fulltime for the tool company and beganbuilding the house in 1984.

He and Julie Norwall were married in 1986 and moved intothe home in 1988. "It's still not finished the way we envisionedit over the years, but finishing it keeps me moving," Jim said.

ADVENTURES

He and Julie enjoyed many Healey adventures and bicyclingtours over the years. Trips in the BN-1 included severalRendezvous gatherings, wandering the coulees of westernWisconsin, plus several crosscountry journeys between theWest Coast and Twin Cities. Cross-country jaunts took himalong Route 66—the Mother Road—and other BlueHighways. Remember, the nation's freeway system wasn'tbegun until late in the Eisenhower administration. Jim also

proudly shows visitors the Best of Show plaque he and Juliewon in the Healey at the 2004 Wings & Wheels in Osceola,Wis.

One month-long bicycling tour found them pedaling acrossthe Scottish Highlands. The Highlands inspired them. Eachcaptured scenes of that trip: Julie in paints and watercolors;Jim through photography. Several of those scenes grace wallsof their home.

Jim is still making improvements to the house, althoughJulie's health began deteriorating in 2000 and she passed awayin 2008.

Jim remains a sports car enthusiast. He regularly attends theclub's annual Amery Airport Autocross and Afton AlpsHillclimb. While he doesn't drive the Healey often, heremains a manual transmission devotee. His six-speed 2010BMW 335i twin turbo spirits him to those events and annualbicycle tours of Door County, Wisconsin.

If you plan to visit him in Marine on St. Croix be sure to callfirst. He might be out on a 21-mile bicycle tour like he was theday I first tried to contact him.

That's Jim polishing his Healey 100 before a Boeing SportsCar Club rally in the mid 1950s. The original picture is fromthe Boeing employee newspaper.

Obviously it’s an engine and transmission being lowered intoa car’s frame, but which engine, which transmission and whichframe? The engine and frame have the same answer, TriumphTR4. But about that transmission. Notice its gearshift lever. Can’t see it? It’s there but I can’t see it in this picture either. The transmission is a Borg Warner Type 35 automatic. Alsonot visible here is the Triumph 2000 sedan parts car fromwhich it was lifted.

Now for the big question: Why put an automatic tranny in aTR4? The answer has to do with age, not our cars’ age but ourcars’ owners’. John Kallaus, the entrepreneurial engineerbehind this project, figures there’s going to be enough arthritisgoing around our ranks in a few years to make the autoconversion as desirable as the five-speed conversion is today. The Type 35 is found in everything from Jaguars to Volvo240s so there are a lot of them lying around in junkyards. AllJohn needs to have made is the bell housing and tailpiece. Canhe take your order today or do you want to wait five years?

WANTED TO BUY1275cc "A Plus" engineblock for Sprite/Midget.Call Tom at 612-237-1883 if I can take oneoff your hands.

TWO PROJECT CARS FOR SALE: TRIUMPH SPITFIRE 6 AND A TR7SPIT 6: Includes Spit 6 frame, suspension, wheels, and drive train from a ʼ71 GT6. Everything is stock to myknowledge. No overdrive. Drive train and suspension are currently not mounted to the frame. The frame will neednew outriggers and new hard brake lines. The engine last ran in 2004, but ran well. The twin ZS carbs are notmounted to the engine. Tub is a rust free ʼ76 with a clean MN title. There is some surface rust in places, but itʼsvery minor. Frankly, itʼs the cleanest Spit tub Iʼve ever seen. There is a very shallow indentation in the right rearfender, from when I bumped it into my mostly yellow Spit while rolling it around. Should be a minor task to repair. The bonnet is from a ʼ72 GT6. It has some surface rust, and is slightly bent along the bottom of the fenders belowthe latches. It will need a little straightening prior to paint. Youʼd have a choice of GT6 or Spitfire doors – I haveboth. I also have the lower front valence pieces where the turn lamps mount. The trunk lid is from another car,and has a luggage rack. Itʼs not one Iʼve seen before. I have a windshield, fuel tank, steering column, ʼ71 GT6wiring harness, gauges, bumpers, soft top frame, exterior lights, steering rack, calipers, clutch slave, heater box, wiper system parts, grill, and seat frames. Iʼm not sure if I have the brake and clutch master cylinders. Things thatI know are missing are the transmission cover, wood dash, interior trim panels, seat covers and foam, carpet, parcel trays, and soft top. There are other things Iʼm forgetting, both included and missing, but this is what I canrecall at the moment. Iʼm asking $1000 for the whole thing.

The TR7 coupe was built in April ʼ75. The car is 95% complete, but the engine needs to be rebuilt. The enginehas been sitting outside for 30 years. I donʼt know if it can be salvaged. The body is very clean. The only rust isthe spare tire well, and a couple of spots on the boot lid. There is surface rust on the roof. The floors and rockersare solid. The interior is complete, but has suffered from sitting for 30 years. I got the car to save it from thecrusher. Given that these cars tended to rust quickly, it seemed a shame to “waste” a solid restoration candidate. It was simply too clean and complete to scrap. I took a bunch of pictures when I got the car, which I can email onrequest. $300 takes it. Both cars in stored just south of St. Peter MN. Contact Bill, 612-850-4072
