About that elephant in the room.

Your editors are burnt-out. Brian’s kids aregetting so old that they no longer need to use

the car seats in the 2CV. They’re reachinga fun age. That means he needs

to spend more time withthem and to making

money to pay for theircollege extortion. Me, I’m just

getting old. Not Depends old, but old enough that I can’t spend every hourof my weekend attending car events and my whole week writing them up forthis newsletter.

So, here’s the deal. If you want to apply for the Managing Editor or theProduction Editor positions (or both), we will consider your résumé. (If youknow the difference between its and it’s, you’re qualified.) If nobody applies, new rules go into effect.

The history of the Monthly was up to us. Its future is up to you.

Cheerio. Ciao. A bientot. Auf Wiedersehen. Sayonara.

NEW RULES FOR 2013: If you don’t write a report aboutan event, there won’t be a report in the Monthly. From hereon out InterMarque Monthly will continue as a calendar andclassified-focused pub. Clarification for the hard of hearing:

• We are not going to spend our time whining for you tosubmit reports. This is the last time we'll ask for articles.

• Photo dumps without captions or blog links do notconstitute Monthly event reports.

• If others step up to write and submit articles we wouldstill feature them.

You should have been there. Can an event be a classic after only

one running? Yes, Waumandee meets all the requirements. There

was an intriguing mix of old cars — everything from MG Midgets

to formula racers to Herby the Love Bug. There was a fantastic

location — the Alma Chamber says it’s the second most scenic

site in Wisconsin.

In addition, the Hillclimb had a story of a struggle against fantastic odds — evenbefore the first car turned a wheel on September 22. Let’s go back a ways. Theimpresario behind the Healey Club’s Afton Alps Hillclimb and Amery AirportSpeed Run, Tom (Amazen) Hazen, happened upon Blank Hill Road. After climbing400 feet in two miles with eighteen curves, Tom arrived at the farmstead of MikeBlank, an 87-year-old Norwegian bachelor. Tom was impressed, and you know ittakes a heck of a road to impress Tom. What followed were discussions with Mike, the Minnesota Austin-Healey Club’s board of directors, the Waumandee towncouncil, the somewhat hesitant local sheriff, the Chamber of Commerce, and halfthe population of Buffalo County. By sometime this spring, most of the annoyingdetails had been worked out and all concerned said. “OK, let’s give the hillclimb ashot.” This in itself was roughly equivalent to achieving peace in the Mideast orgetting Congress to agree on whether the chicken or the egg came first.

All that was required then were hours and countless hours working on advertising, handholding, setting up the course, contracting with an ambulance and tow truck, begging for volunteers, and checking and rechecking the budget numbers. A fewweeks before the scheduled event, it became clear that the Healey Club would losea couple grand if they didn’t cancel it. You know what? They didn’t. Decided totake a bath this year as an investment in the future. That took guts.

Well, so much for background. Now, the Waumandee Hillclimb in pictures:

At the drivers’ meeting beforethe hillclimb began, TomHazen explained the rules ofthe game. He emphasizedthat drivers really, reallyneeded to be really careful. Ifyou hit one cone on your wayup the hill, you would beplaced on double secretprobation. Hit two or put atire off the pavement and youwere done for the day. Notonly that, but Tom noted thatif you really messed up youcould be dead – a much morepermanent set of affairs.

Friday was a darkand stormy night.Saturday morningwasn’t thatpleasant either, butthe rain eased up abit on the way toBlank Hill Road.

On Saturday, September 29th, we entered the world of classic

car regularity rallying at the Coulee Classic in Wisconsin. This is a

report of how our day went.

The event, put on by Auto Italia Minnesota, was due to start in Maiden Rock,Wisconsin, at 11:00 a.m. Since registration began at 10:00, we left home in Princetonat eight for the two-hour-plus drive. This drive included the wholly unremarkablehighways and interstates around the Twin Cities. (Although zooming through theLowry Hill Tunnel in Minneapolis kind of put me in mind of the tunnel on theMonaco Grand Prix circuit.)

Once past Prescott we started to get a taste of what the rally roads were going to belike, cruising up and down hills surrounded by trees changing color. The sceneryand views here were great. We were, however, later to find out this was nothing likethe real rally roads.

Arriving at Maiden Rock’s Village Park, we were greeted by the sight of a line ofbright, shiny cars. Old classics and newer cars too. Modern Fiat 500s (no originalCinquecento sadly) and a classic Alfa Spider were the Italian marques. British carswere the most popular classics with a Healey 3000, two MGs (our 1976 MGB namedFG and an MGA), and a Triumph TR3. Michael Barone’s 2CV was perhaps themost unusual car and a classic Porsche 356 grabbed the most attention from passers-by. Even FG the MGB was recognized by one competitor as the “self appointedmost beautiful rubber nosed MGB in Minnesota.” That was gratifying as it meanssome people do read what I put out on the internet.

After the drivers’ briefing ended, 11:00 a.m. arrived and we were all off! Traffic wasstopped on Hwy. 35 as we exited the park and headed south out of town. Very cool.Technically the cars should have gone off at one-minute intervals and we shouldhave waited until 11:12 a.m. as we were car number 12. But since this first leg wasto set the cars’ odometers, this was not an issue. It just led to a string of cars waitingat a crossroads in the middle of nowhere to begin the rally.

COULEE CLASSIC ROAD RALLY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7

A quick word ofexplanation to thoseof you who don’tknow what aregularity rally is. Itis an event over anumber of stages, some long, someshort, and the aim isnot to be the fastestbut to be the nearestto a set time for eachstage. If you matchthat time you get zeropoints. Faster orslower than that time, you get penalized. The winner has the lowest score. Zero points would be perfectbut is difficult to achieve as you’re penalized for being even ahundreth of a minute off. Setting the odometer in the very firststage is therefore important so that you know how close yourodometer is to official race distances. Another confusing thingfor first timers is that timing is done on a decimal scale, i.e., ahalf-minute is not recorded as 30 seconds but 0.5 minutes, 15seconds are 0.25 minutes, etc.

At our start time we were off, feeling our way around to startwith. If we were close to our appointed finish time on eachstage, it was mainly by luck. The scenery in the Coulee countrywas gorgeous. With the fall colors almost at peak it was extrabeautiful. The reds of the traditional barns against abackground of the trees’ yellows and oranges. All against a

deep blue sky. At times itwas difficult to concentrateon driving. Many times wewanted to stop and takepictures, but we alsowanted to have a good goat this “regularity” thing.

After three stages we had alunch break in Plum City. The sight of a dozenclassics on Main Streetcreated some interestamongst the locals, one ofwhom had brought his ownclassic car, a colossalyellow Chrysler Imperial

that was so big you could have fit four MGBs in it.

After lunch, we got confused following the instructions out ofPlum City and weren’t the only ones. I think a yellow Hondagot lost for good there. Once out of Plum City, we missed aroad sign because it was obscured by corn stalks. A rookiemistake, as experts would have been measuring distances. (Seeabove on the importance of setting your odometer.) By the endof the stage we were some 14 minutes off pace and took a 14.50-minute delay as was our right. Then we set off to recover the 14minutes. We got through the rest of the stages OK, but maybewe should have kept taking delays through the other stagesuntil the break in Durand. This aspect wasn’t explained clearlyenough for us at the briefing so we ended up gathering loads ofpenalty points over the next stages. Stage five gave us the

pleasant sight of ten Corvette owners out for a drive. We shareda cheery wave with every one of them as we passed. The breakin Durand was welcome as it got us back on schedule and gaveus a chance to chat with some of the other rallyists.

With four more stages to go we were starting to grasp theconcept of regularity rallying. Waiting until our appointed timeto leave the stage start point and judging our arrival time tocross the finish. So much so that we logged two zero pointstages in the last four stages of the race. As the marshal at oneof the stage finishes said as he handed us our slip, “You can’t bebetter than that.” We were pretty pleased with ourselves I cantell you. We were enjoying ourselves.

But that was it.

The rally was over. We headed over to the Stone Barn inNelson, for some of their artisan pizza and to turn in our scoresheet for the final results.

Now things got really confusing for us beginners. We didn’thave to turn in our score sheets until we’d done all thecalculations. We had a grasp of the math behind the scoring, butnot every finish Marshal had filled in his scoring slip the sameway. We even had two scoring slips for stage seven.

“Ask the more experienced rally-ers for help in doing theadding up,” was the instruction. Fine. No problem. That waywe got to know some other people and find out what nice folksthey are. But even they had to scratch their heads in confusion

when one scoring slip looked like we’d reached the finish of astage 50 minutes before we were due to start it!

With no results announced by 6:30 p.m., we began our two-and-a-half-hour drive back home. However many points wescored didn’t matter. We knew we weren’t going to trouble theprizewinners. But we really enjoyed the event and would do itagain. It was pretty much 9:00 p.m. when we arrived back inPrinceton tired and worn out. Nine hours and some 400 miles.FG the MGB had purred the whole way. What a wonderful carit is. It deserved a special washing and waxing after that.

A thanks to the organizers for putting the race on, especially thestage finish marshals who found themselves waiting a ratherlong time for us in the middle of the race.

It was great fun and I’m sure we’ll do one again.
