From the Pastor Dear Parishioners: One of the “casualties” of these months of the pandemic has been the situation faced by couples planning their weddings. When you think about all the preparation and details that go into staging an event like this it is hard to accept that an invisible virus can wreak havoc on even the most detailed and efficient planning. Faced with the challenges of shuttered churches, venues unable to accommodate large groups, family, and friends fearful of traveling or being in close proximity to others, these perspective brides and grooms had to carefully re-access their options. Some rescheduled several months later only to find that the situation had not changed that dramatically. Others faced with uncertainty in the near future put their date off until next year. Some decided to scale down their event to respect the existing public health norms and had a smaller celebration than what had been planned. Each of these couples- to- be were faced with challenges to their plans that they had to confront and make decisions about what they had originally planned for their special day. They had to reflect upon how their decision would affect others, weigh the possibilities, and then move ahead. That experience as upsetting and unsettling as it was, perhaps could be seen as the first real test of their marriage. It involved consideration, compromise, flexibility in pursuit of a common goal. This weekend at the 10:00AM Mass at OLPH we are honoring those couples who are celebrating “milestone” (25th or 50th) wedding anniversaries in 2020. This was originally scheduled to take place in May but had to be postponed. As we look at these couples renewing their vows, it is important to realize that each of them has a unique story to tell. Their journey to this moment in their relationship no doubt had twists and turns that they would not have imagined on their wedding day. To get to this moment they had to use many of the same skills that our engaged couples had to use. Each time they did so their commitment to each other grew stronger and their love grew. As a parish we exist to nurture, prepare, and encourage couples planning a life commitment together. We can talk and give them different ideas how to work collaboratively but there is no lesson better taught than a married life well lived. Today we honor those who are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year and we thank them because they are living examples for others to follow. Sincerely,
Rev. Robert J. DeJulio, Pastor
