WINTER SKILLS AVALANCHE AWARENESS

WINTER NAVIGATION

INTRODUCTION TO WINTER MOUNTAINEERING

INTRODUCTION TO SKI MOUNTAINEERING

DEC - FEB DEC - FEB

DEC - MAR

MARCH MARCH

You’ll be amazed what we can teach in one day, learn and practice those all essential winter skills for safely journeying through Scotland’s winter mountains.

Our courses concentrate on how to use your equipment, calculate risk and make the right decisions to safely travel in winter conditions.

Our mountain experts will help you to enjoy the Scottish Mountains more confidently and independently & even the most experienced walkers need to stay well practised when it comes to winter mountain safety.

For walkers, climbers, skiers and snowboarders. Don’t get caught out! This course will not scare you… but, give you confidence and guidelines on how to avoid avalanche prone terrain.

The course will cover how to use internationally accepted guidelines and the safety equipment you should consider taking with you. We will unwrap the big three factors: Planning (knowing what the forecast hazards are before setting out), Your Journey (Knowing what to observe and when during your journey) and Key Places During Your Mountain Trip (by the time you reach key places you know what the hazards are but more importantly having confidence making good decisions. The course will cover what is happening beneath the snow pack and the influence of weather on top of the snow pack.

The course is for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts…from beginner to the experienced. All participants will be provided with an Avalanche beacon for the day.

This course will analyse your navigation behaviours and introduce techniques associated with poor weather navigation. Knowing which navigation technique to use and when is our main emphasis, including; understanding the links between navigation technique and its impact on your decision making i.e. route strategy.

We will help build your knowledge and confidence but improve your accuracy and efficiency at the same time. The course also introduces GPS systems including GPS phones, alongside advanced conventional navigation techniques. So if you have already experienced our micro navigation courses then move on to the next level. GPS units are provided but please bring your own if you have one, maps reference sheet number and locations will be given on the Friday evening.

In winter, knowing which navigation skills you need to get there and back again safely is often underestimated. Navigating in winter is a serious business but help is at hand. The most important single mountain skill you need is knowing how to navigate when it matters. Coping with winter white-outs with confidence is a huge challenge for anyone.

This course is completely hands on, utilising maps*. Coaching is delivered by highly confident winter navigators who use these skills on a daily basis.*Maps are not supplied. Sheet numbers will be made known before the event.

Progress from winter walking to mountaineering! Learn the basic but essential rope skills to help you safely tackle difficult and tricky terrain. This course has a definite hands on approach and packs a lot into one day.

Knowing what to do comes with practice and in return builds your confidence and provides a reliable blueprint to always draw from.

This course is led by professional mountaineering instructors, amongst the top in the UK, delivering a constant flow of top tips and handy hints.

This popular day course is designed for individuals aspiring to learn the fundamental skills for off-piste ski travel.

Our goal is to develop safe, self-reliant ski-mountaineers ready to climb and ski locally or in the great ranges of the world.

This course is truly an excellent foundation for any skier seeking independence in the Scottish alpine arena.

Participants should have some on-piste ski experience and be able to ski around comfortably on groomed piste and have an interest in winter walking.
