“2 A Word From Our Pastor

…is the title of the autobiography of one of America’s best loved and most popular evangelists. Brother Doctor Junior Hill was born in Hartselle, Alabama a long time ago. Although his family didn’t attend church, a lady in his town invited him and some of his friends to go to Sunday school and church. He was saved and not long afterward, he was called to preach the gospel. He graduated from Howard College and then graduated from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. After serving as a pastor for nine years, God called him to be a full-time evangelist. Since 1967 God has used him all over the United States and in several foreign crusades. He preaches

They Call Him “Junior”in mega-churches and in churches on dirt roads. His messages are simple, scriptural, Spirit-filled, and anointed by the power of God. Junior Hill is coming to First Baptist Church of Pelham on February 13th for all three morning services. He wanted me to entreat you to bring your lost and unchurched relatives, neighbors, friends and associates. When he comes we have an opportunity to invest in his ministry. Pray for Bro. Hill and his wife, Carole. Bring people who need to hear the gospel. Pray for a powerful movement of God in the services. I love you, I love you, I love you. God bless you and God bless America!

Dear Dave, How much do you put into your old car for maintenance and repairs before it makes sense to buy a new vehicle? ChristyDear Christy, I know a lot of people don’t believe this, but it’s almost never mathematically justifiable to go out and buy a new car, or even a newer one. Let’s say you’re driving a $1,000 car, and you keep having problems and putting $250 worth of repairs or maintenance into it each month. Do you realize how long you can keep putting that $250 into the car before you reach the point of it making sense to buy a new $10,000 car? I mean, we’re literally talking about years! Really, it all boils down to a couple of things. One, do you have the money sitting around to pay cash for a new car? If you’ve worked hard and can go to the dealership and write a check for a new car, then go for it. The second thing is the hassle factor. Is the car absolutely unsafe, or is it driving you nuts in terms of inconvenience and repair costs? If so, then, you might need to look into getting

a newer vehicle. You’ll notice I didn’t say a new car, right? And you still pay cash. You don’t want five or six years’ worth of car payments hanging around your neck. I’m not against you having a nice car, Christy. What I’m against is your nice car having you! Dave

Dear Dave, I’m 54, my husband is 56, and we still have three teenagers at home. Recently, we were told that it’s the perfect time for us to buy long-term care insurance. What do you think about this idea? Terri

Dear Terri, My guess is that you were advised to buy this by someone who sells insurance. I’d also call this a conflict of interest! If you’ll do a little bit of research, you will find that there’s about a one percent chance of folks your age needing long-term care insurance. So no, it’s not the perfect time for you guys to do this. I don’t insure things that have such a miniscule chance of happening. Once you turn 60, the chances of something unfortunate happening rise practically every day. That’s why I advise people to start shopping for long-term care insurance on their 60th birthday, regardless of their income or assets. Think of it as a gift to yourself and your family. Nursing home care can run anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 a year. That will crack and scramble most people’s nest eggs in a hurry! Do you want long-term care insurance? Absolutely. But my advice is to wait until you’re 60 years old. Dave*For more financial advice, you may visit www.davesays.org.

The Counselor’s Corner

We all know that communication is an extremely important factor in suc-cessful marriages. Many couples seem to spend a large amount of time “talking to one another”, but at the end of the day don’t feel they have successfully communicated. I have listed below some suggestions or guidelines that will prove to foster and enhance communication in your marriage.

1. Be a good listener. Being a good listener conveys to your spouse that you care. It takes skill to wait until the other person is totally finished with what they are saying, and to concentrate on what they are saying, rather than on what we want to say.

2. Communicating is more than speaking words. Some experts believe that words are only 20% of the communication process. Body language and tone of voice each con-tribute up to 40%. Saying the words “I’m sorry” with an angry tone and

expression really doesn’t convey its meaning.

3. Don’t overuse problem-solving skills. Problem solving is a great form of communication when, and only when, someone asks for your advice.

4. Communicate your feelings. Avoid telling the other person how they should feel. Use statements be-ginning with “I feel” and avoid using the word “you”.

5. Don’t use absolutes like Never, Always, or You Make Me when in conflict. These will surely invite a defensive posture from the other person.

6. Choose the right time and place for discussing challenging issues. Reserve the bedroom for intimacy and sleeping, and the kitchen for eat-ing and family time. Avoid discuss-

ing challenging issues late at night or when you are extremely tired.

7. Avoid right/wrong conclusions. In many circumstances spouses are neither right or wrong, they just have different opinions and feelings. Agree to disagree.

8. Deal with one issue at a time. Stick to the issue at hand, leaving old argu-ments out of the discussion.

9. Be positive. Learn to say things in a positive, respectful way. Second to Christ, the person you should respect and esteem most is your spouse.

10. End with an encouraging word. Although you may not arrive at a perfect resolution, reaffirming your commitment to the marriage and your love for your spouse will pave the way for more open communication in the future.

Deadline to register is Feb. 4

Dear Senior Adults,

Maybe the bad weather is over for this year! Since we had to cancel the January luncheon, we will get another shot this month. Feb-ruary 8th is our scheduled luncheon date and John will be cooking for us. Since that is the week prior to Valentine’s Day, you can come celebrate with your loved ones (other senior adults). I know that some of you are concerned about the possible date of our Senior Adult Mission Trip. There is a lot going on during AEA week. We are planning our trip on April 4-8. The months of March and April are packed full of activities and we want to be cooperative with the whole church schedule in our planning. We have already been on mission trips several times before, and we will get it done. I will be able to tell you more about it at our meeting on February 8. It is possible that we will go back to New Orleans, but that depends on finding activities suitable for us. We will also get back on schedule with our day trips as soon as all this weather settles down. I am looking forward to seeing you again on the 8th. For His Glory, Bro. Paul
