SFR:Temperature : 650ºC Diameter 10.73 mmDose : > 150 dpa Thickness 0.500 mmStress : up to 100 Mpa Thin tubes several
meters long(R.E. Logé, CEA)
Requirements:- High temperature (creep)
resistance
- High swelling resistance
- Compatibility with coolant (liquid metal)
Candidates:- Oxide dispersion
strengthened (ODS) steels- Creep strength enhanced
ferritic (CSEF) steels (through termomechanical treatments)
Both are also candidate fusion materials

ODS tubes can be fabricated …
• ODS cladding tube fabrication has been demonstrated: France, Japan, Russia, US …

… but much R&D remains!
• Increase ductility (ODS tend to be brittle)
• Control microstructure (reduce anisotropy of thin-walled tubes)
• Reduce fabrication cost (powder metallurgy or new routes)
• Scale to industrial fabrication
• Fully qualify material for application as cladding
• …

Research in SP2
• Monitoring national programmes European activities on ODS/Enhanced creep alloys “Catalogue” of available materials / producers
• Exploring new fabrication routes: (FP7/MATTER) Improvement of powder metallurgical process and optimization of final thermo-
mechanical treatment Conventional steel making techniques (introducing the oxide particles in the
melt) Spark plasma sintering techniques
• ODS cladding tubes characterization (FP7/MATISSE, FP7/GETMAT follow-up) Microstructural stability under high temperature and irradiation Anisotropy studies (biaxial mechanical testing) Screening activities under accidental scenario

Next steps & links
• Identify new industrial partners
• Dissemination & international cooperation (INERI-USA, IAEA, NEA)
• Consider other innovative steels: CSEF
2015 2017 2020
• Validated conventional and/or cheaper fabrication routes
• Production at industrial scale
Optimised ferritic and martensitic ODS cladding tubes: controlled microstructure & mechanical properties
• Same materials as for fusion: operating conditions & form differ, but fabrication problems and requirements of radiation resistance are similar
• High temperature resistance is of use also for other energy technologies links with other EERA JPs, EMIRI, ESTEP (for fabrication), …
