The feast of Epiphany is all about evangelization: God an-nounces the good news of the Savior to all peoples. Isaiah speaks of a day when peoples and nations shall be gathered in unity around the light. Any evangelization effort must promote understanding among peoples in the hope of fur-thering the coming together in harmony of different cul-tures. Part of the joy of being a Roman Catholic is the rich diversity within our church. We are not a church of one language, class, or ethnicity, but of all peoples. In many parishes, the image of Isaiah is enacted when the communi-ty goes forward to communion. Then all classes are gather-ing around the light of the Eucharist, which feeds us and enlightens our way. The star the wise men followed was also a light announcing the coming of Christ to all the world. It was in the sky for everyone to see, but only these wise men saw it and fol-lowed it in the hope they might find the king. They were not Jews, and yet they knew of this King’s coming from their own traditions and wisdom. And every religion hopes for a day of unity when all are gathered to the light. Jesus is the one in whom that light shines forth most strongly. How might we permit his light to shine through us without being obscured by our own ideas and prejudices of what that light means? And we are called to search out his light already shining in other cultures. Finding the light there helps peo-ple of those cultures recognize the same light in Jesus and helps us to allow that light to shine more clearly in our own tradition.
La fiesta de la Epifanía tiene que ver con la evangelización: Dios anuncia las buenas nuevas del Salvador a todos los pueb-los. Isaías habla de un día en que los pueblos y las naciones se reunirán en unidad alrededor de la luz. Cualquier esfuerzo de evangelización debe promover el entendimiento entre los pueblos con la esperanza de promover la unión en armonía de diferentes culturas. Parte de la alegría de ser católico romano es la rica diversidad dentro de nuestra iglesia. No somos una iglesia de un solo idio-ma, clase o etnia, sino de todos los pueblos. En muchas par-roquias, la imagen de Isaías se promulga cuando la comunidad avanza hacia la comunión. Entonces todas las clases se reúnen alrededor de la luz de la Eucaristía, Lo que nos alimenta e ilumina nuestro camino. La estrella que los sabios siguieron fue también una luz que anunciaba la venida de Cristo a todo el mundo. Estaba en el cielo para que todos lo vieran, pero solo estos sabios lo vieron y lo siguieron con la esperanza de poder encontrar al rey. The Year of our Lord
The beginning of a new year always holds potential — an opportunity to reflect on the year that has just concluded,
build on past successes, learn from mistakes, and resolve to live with greater commitment and integrity in the year
to come.
This month’s Sunday readings provide particular wisdom upon which to reflect as we begin 2019. Listen carefully,
and you will hear how precious we are in the eyes of the Lord and how deeply we are called to live as God’s holy
people in the world. We are to be light in darkness, bring healing to those who suffer, and share compassion, jus-
tice, and hope with all people.
Make 2019 “the year of our Lord.” “ Make Jesus the Lord of your life and trust in God to be with you through all the
circumstances you may experience this year. Turn to God in prayer as you face decisions, even little ones. Draw on
Church teaching or a trusted friend or spiritual advisor when making more complicated ones.
Be mindful to give God glory in your words and actions. Reach out to others with love and care; be a peacemaker at
home, office or school, and in the world. Anything that wouldn’t be pleasing to God? Let go of it, stop it, learn to
avoid it!
Remember that every day is a gift. Thank God for each new day and resolve to spend time wisely and well.
Don’t sell yourself short. You have a mission, a purpose, which only you may fulfill. In the words of John Henry Car-
dinal Newman, “God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which
He has not committed to another. I have my mission - I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the
next.”
Make 2019 truly special, a year in which you live as the Lord’s very own in the world. ©Catholic Life and Faith, 2019
El año de nuestro señor
El comienzo de un nuevo año siempre tiene potencial: una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el año que acaba de concluir, aprovechar los éxitos pasados, aprender de los errores y decidir vivir con mayor compromiso e integridad en el año que viene. Las lecturas del domingo de este mes brindan una sabiduría particular sobre la cual reflexionar al comenzar el 2019. Escuche con atención y escuchará lo preciosos que somos ante los ojos del Señor y cuán profundamente estamos llamados a vivir como el pueblo santo de Dios en el mundo. Debemos ser luz en la oscuridad, brindar sanidad a quienes sufren, y compartir compasión, justicia y esperanza con todas las personas. Haz de 2019 "El año de nuestro Señor". "Haz que Jesús sea el Señor de tu vida y confía en que Dios estará contigo en todas las circunstancias que puedas experimentar este año. En las palabras de John Henry Car-dinal Newman, "Dios me ha creado para que le preste un servicio definitivo; Me ha encomendado un trabajo que no ha comprometido con otro. Tengo mi misión: puede que nunca la conozca en esta vida, pero en la próxima me la contarán ". Epiphany of the Lord The word epiphany comes from a Greek word for manifestation or appearance. For many Christians, Epiphany refers to the manifesta-tion of the divine nature of Jesus. It is an experience of a sudden and striking realization. Generally the term is used to describe scientific breakthrough, religious or philosophical discoveries, but it can apply in any situation in which an enlightening realization allows a problem or situation to be understood from a new and deeper perspective. The three gifts had a spiritual meaning: gold as a symbol of king-ship on earth, frankincense (an incense) as a symbol of deity, and myrrh (an embalming oil) as a symbol of death. Epiphany of the Lord is one of the oldest Christian feasts.
Epifanía del señor La palabra epifanía proviene de una palabra griega para manifestación o apariencia. Para muchos cristianos, la Epifanía se refiere a la mani-festación de la naturaleza divina de Jesús. Es una experiencia de una real-ización repentina y sorprendente.
