When we look at most Nativity scenes we see the Three
Kings assembled with the shepherds, angels and animals
around the Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
This scene is historically and Biblically inaccurate because
we know from today’s Gospel that the Kings showed up at a
house, not a stable and we also know that Herod had all the
children under two killed to try and kill the Messiah –
the Holy Family did not live in a stable for two years. Putting
aside this technicality, looking at the traditional Nativity
scene provides some important insights. The shepherds were
poor, the magi rich. The shepherds were Jews, the magi
Gentiles. The shepherds were nearby, the magi travelled for
nearly two years. From this we see that Jesus has always
drawn to himself people from all walks of life. This is true
even today, no matter what our economic status, our race,
where we live or anything else that makes us different from
each other, Jesus calls to us. We then have to respond to that
call. We see from the example of the magi that sometimes it
is not an easy process to draw close to Jesus, but in the end it
is worth more than “Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh”
