An Adventure ~ by Taylah Marsh, Room 9 In the weekend me and my dad and sister went on an

adventure to see the enormous waves. Some were enormous! And some were just BIG. Some were middle sized waves and little waves, some even wet the car. Me and dad

went outside the car. I got wet and dad got wet too. Dad and I got pushed over then we got back into the car and went to a lake that looked like a waterfall but it was very scary because

it crashed at the bottom. There was a tree in the middle of the lake, it was funny, very funny. We carried on then we saw a flood. The lake had too much water in it, but it was shallow

so we could drive through. Then we got out of the car. I walked through the water. Dad came with me. Then the water rose up. We could not get back across the water so we had to take our shoes and socks off and walk across the water. Then we got back in the car and drove home and had a cookie and

a milo. It was an exciting day.

OFFICIAL SECTION

Kia Ora and Welcome to TAN A very special welcome to Jaxon Shaw, who started school yesterday in Room 7.

On Monday we had nine seniors attend the Careers Expo in Timaru. Although it was a bit smaller than usual (Aoraki Polytechnic is busy reorganising as Ara) the students found the range of advice about industries valuable. We received some good feedback from Trish Terpstra, HR training adviser at Oceania Dairy, which speaks to the kind of qualities we hold dear. “As an exhibitor at yesterday’s Careers Expo, I would like to express how impressed the team at Oceania Dairy were with the behaviour of all of the students we were in contact with from your school. They were friendly, respectful and very polite, a great representation of your school and its values”.

Board of Trustees nominations closed last Friday at noon, and the Returning Officer by then had received six nominations for the three places. It is great that we have this level of interest in providing good governance for the school, and I would like to thank the people who allowed their names to be put forward for doing so. They are:

Scott Aronsen Debra Hunter Jen Purdie Nyree Schaar Sarah Sutherland Jason Swain

The voting forms have been posted to all those on the parent roll. Look after them, as the Returning Officer tells me you cannot get another one if you lose it! Voting closes at noon on Friday, 3rd June. As our Board now operates staggered election cycles, there will be another election in eighteen months time for two places.

We have had Paul O’Reilly the soccer man, from South Canterbury Soccer, here for three days this week taking different groups of students from New Entrants up to Year 6, and a group of the weekend soccer players after school. It is good for our children to practice a variety of different skills from different sports, and it was great to see some adults watching as well to pick up some ideas and different drills.

I have appointed Mr Chris Heaphy as a part time school counsellor for the remainder of the year. Mr Heaphy has an M. Ed in Counselling, and a long career in Guidance and Outdoor Education around Christchurch. Currently he does two days a week counselling at Linwood High School in Christchurch, but lives in Oamaru, so we are fortunate he has agreed to come up here once a fortnight to be available for our students and staff to work with.

Year 11-13 students are off to Huxley Lodge this afternoon on our own leadership course, returning tomorrow afternoon. The aim is to develop communication and group work skills together, using the outdoors and activities around Huxley. There will also be assessment for some unit standards associated with participating in a group.
