Aoraki Polytechnic offers a range of specialist programmes that cater for various rural sector careers and roles.The South Island of New Zealand is an outstanding location which provides some of the best agricultural and horticultural opportunities in the country. Much of our teaching is delivered at our 60ha rural training centre. Our programmes cover a diverse range of subjects including raising sheep and cattle, pasture management, pest control, rural machinery and vehicles including ATVs, tractors and implements, soil and water management, nursery production and fencing.

National Certificate in Agriculture (Introductory Skills) Level 2

Starts: Janurary and July

Level: 2

Duration: Up to 24 weeks full-time

Campus: Rural Training Centre – Timaru

If you would like to work in the rural sector our certificate provides the introductory farming and labouring skills you will need for employment.

Training takes place at our 60-hectare Aoraki Rural Training Centre where you will learn rural skills in real agricultural business situations.

Our tutors guide you through your studies, assist with work experience. They also give you advice on seeking employment after successful completion of the programme.

What will this programme cover?

• Irrigation system repairs and maintenance

• Vehicle and machinery maintenance and operation

• Livestock grazing, handling and treatment

• Hazard identification and safe work practices

• Animal welfare and behaviour

• Work experience

What do you need to apply?Open entry.

National Certificate in Farming Skills (Work Ready)

Starts: February

Level: 3

Duration: 34 weeks full-time

Campus: Rural Training Centre – Timaru

If you would like to learn specialised farming skills or if you would like to turn your rural sector experience into recognised farming qualifications then this national certificate is for you.

This programme includes training in specialised farming skills that are utilised over a full farming year prior to employment in the agriculture industry. Training takes place at our 60-hectare Aoraki Rural Training Centre where you will learn work-ready skills in real agricultural business situations.

Part of your week will be spent at the centre and part will be spent on work placement at local farms giving you credible work experience and immediate contacts within the industry.

What will this programme cover?

• Livestock handling

• Personal wellbeing and first aid

• Vehicles and machinery

• Pasture, soil and water management

• Agricultural resources, machinery and tools

• Pest control

• Fencing

• Dairy and sheep farming

• Livestock species

• Animal husbandry and breeding

What do you need to apply?

It is desirable that you have 3 years of secondary education and successful completion of NCEA Level 1 with a minimum of 12 credits in literacy and 12 credits in numeracy; or completed to National Certificate in Agriculture (Level 2); or equivalent and attendance at an information sharing session.

This programme will provide you with the ability to undertake a range of horticultural tasks at a tradesperson level. The general qualification covers broad knowledge and skills relevant across all sectors of the horticulture industry. Whilst the optional strands embedded in the qualification recognise the specialised knowledge and skill in the sector chosen.

AGRICULTURE

National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3)

Duration: 30 weeks full-time

Campus: Rural Training Centre – Timaru

In a country where agricultural products are one of our main export markets qualified horticulture professionals are in demand and part of an immediate skills shortage in New Zealand. Take advantage of this gap in the job market and gain a qualification that can lead you to employment. This programme will provide you with a broad range of skills and knowledge that can be used in the horticulture industry.

Training for this certificate takes place at our 60-hectare Aoraki Rural Training Centre where you will learn work-ready skills in real horticulture business situations. This programme includes engagement and support from local industry that opens up opportunities for work experience and employment.

What will this programme cover?

• Personal wellbeing and first aid

• Vehicles and machinery

• Soil and water management

• Horticultural resources, machinery and tools

• Pest and weed control

• Propagation and nursery production

• Recycling and reuse

What do you need to apply?To enter this National Certificate programme it is desirable you have at least 3 years secondary education along with successful completion of NCEA level 1 with a minimum of 12 credits in literacy and 12 credits in numeracy; or equivalent. and attendance at an information sharing session.

Students for whom English is their second language, an overall IELTS score of 5.5 or an equivalent TOEFL score is required unless other-wise stated.

Step 1. Application

All full-time programmes require an application.

You can fill out an application form online at www.aoraki.ac.nz/enrolment/enrolment-form/

We take applications right up until the programme commences.

Step 2. Entry Criteria

You may be invited to attend an interview or information sharing meeting with the programme tutor/staff to ensure you meet programme entry criteria.

You may also view the facilities and discuss the programme in more detail.

You are welcome to bring family or whanau support.

If all criteria are met we’ll send you a letter of acceptance offering you a place on the programme.

Some programmes may “wait list” where applications exceed enrolment.

Step 3. Enrolment

Along with your acceptance letter we’ll send you an enrolment pack.

To enrol:

• Complete the Enrolment Form.

• Provide enrolment documentation as detailed in the enrolment pack.

• Return everything to us either by post or in person together with the $100 non-refundable deposit.

Special Admission Students who do not meet the entry requirements (or equivalent) may apply to the Head of School for special admission. Admission under these circumstances will be made at the discretion of the Head of School.

Recognition of Prior Learning Aoraki Polytechnic has Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) processes to assess relevant, current skills and knowledge gained from previous study and learning. Please contact Aoraki Polytechnic if you think you might have previous learning that could be credited towards an Aoraki Polytechnic qualification.
