Since the introduction of the PBL band system, day one this term, we have seen an increase in positive behaviours displayed throughout our school by our students. The students are rewarded under the three PBL focus areas; Respectful, Responsible Learners by means of a teal band. Students acrew these bands for displaying positive behaviours during school. HOW DOES THE BAND SYSTEM WORK? When the students gain three teal bands they trade these for a pink band. The students then gain teal bands to continue trading up gain three pink bands. Once they have three pink bands the students trade up to Purple bands and receive a

merit card for their continued efforts under the PBL structure. The students continue going through the teal and pink until they gain three purple bands. Then the three purple bands are traded for a yellow band which entitles the students to a yellow letter being sent home to parents and caregivers which acknowledges the students positive efforts and a morning tea with the deputy principal, this is happening in the last week of term. The final band to gain after three yellow bands is a rainbow which entitles the students to the end of term celebrations day activities which is organised and selected by the SRC.

Building on their already outstanding reputation for events catering, Warren Central School students have been working hard again in the community, most recently preparing and serving dinner for the Silver City Bush Treadlers’ send-off dinner.

Each year the group of keen cyclists take on the challenge of a ride through the Australian outback to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS ) South Eastern Section. Their 2014 tour started in Warren on Sunday 20 July and Ms Rice and her hospitality students were approached to cater for the dinner on the Saturday night prior. With an 800km ride through to Lightning Ridge, Hebel on the boarder of Queensland then back to the Macquarie Marshes on Friday 1 August they were going to need a hearty send off meal. Our team did not disappoint with a three course dinner for sixty-five in the school hall proving to be no drama.

As always Ms Rice and Mrs Mayger volunteered their time to assist our young team of caterers on the night and were pleased to receive many compliments from the cyclists as well as from our Mayor, Rex Wilson, who also mentioned the students in his column in the Warren Weekly. Many of the cyclists were particularly impressed with the food being made from scratch by the students (some had thought the desserts must have been purchased!) and with the professional manner of dress and delivery of service.

Although the students volunteer for most of their catering jobs, the experience they have gained and reputation for professionalism and diligence they have achieved has brought them to the attention of professional caterers and on occasion offers of paid work. During the recent school holidays a number of our past and current hospitality students were approached by Relish Catering of Narrabri to work at the Warren Rugby Club's 60th Anniversary Dinner with 450 guests! For the Warren Central School families present on the night it was a proud moment to see our students going about their jobs efficiently and hear the positive comments from other guests on the night.

Congratulations to Ms Rice, Mrs Mayger and our Hospitality caterers; you make us all proud.

Education Week Next week is Education Week and there will be activities where the parents and community can come into the school to celebrate and share our success. At the end of last term Annabelle Taylor and Prue Murray were informed that they had been successful in being chosen in a select group of twenty students to participate in the Department of Education and Communities’ “Secretary for a Day”. This program enables Year 11 students from around the state to shadow a senior officer from the DEC for a day. Prue and Annabelle are the first students from Warren Central School to ever be chosen to participate in this program. Prue will be shadowing Mr Greg Prior (Deputy Secretary of the DEC) and will be participating in the Education Week launch at Campbelltown School of the Performing Arts on Monday. Annabelle will be shadowing Ms Cheryl Best (Executive Director – Learning and Business Systems) and will also be at the launch in Campbelltown. On Tuesday both students will be participating in a Student Leadership Forum in Sydney.

Congratulations to Prue and Annabelle on being selected to participate in the exclusive program. At Warren Central School on Wednesday a number of activities will be held to celebrate Education Week. During period 4 there will be an opportunity for parents and the community to see our students’ learning through open classrooms. All classrooms for Kindergarten to Year 12 will be open for display from 12:30pm. This will be followed by our traditional picnic lunch which will be held in the primary playground. All primary and secondary families are invited to attend. Finally we will be holding our Bronze and Silver Assembly in the Hall at 2:00pm. At this assembly Year 8 will be presenting our PBL mascot “Aquilla” the wedge-tailed eagle. Visitors to School and Communication with Teachers I would like to remind all parents, carers and members of the public to conduct all their enquiries and business through the Front Office. I would like to remind members of the school and community that if you need to move to another part of the school you will be given a visitor’s tag which must be worn and returned to the Front Office. All parents and carers are reminded that they cannot go to classrooms during school hours as this disrupts student learning. All packages and bags must be left at the Front Office and staff will distribute it to students at breaks. Again the school would like to outline for all parents and carers the lines of communication that will get you the answers to your questions and queries sooner. If you have a concern about your child’s learning please contact the classroom teacher as soon as a problem arises. So many issues can be easily solved when the parents and teachers are talking as the concern arises. If you are not satisfied with the solution please contact the executive supervisors (Head Teachers and Assistant Principal) and then the senior executive (Deputy Principal and Principal). The Deputy Principal is the best contact for welfare issues and the Principal is always available to deal with serious concerns and policy matters. My door is always open and I thank the parents who regularly take up the opportunity to discuss their concerns with me. Online Payments Reminding parents that it is now possible for them to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the school’s website by selecting $ Make a payment. Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject fees, excursions and sales to students. When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter the student’s name and any one of three stated criteria. These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system. For any enquiries regarding the Online Payment please contact Roz Hunt on 6847 4438 during business hours. Updating Information It is important for parents and carers to update their contact phone numbers and addresses with the school. This allows us to contact you if there is an emergency or other matter that requires prompt attention. Incorrect information will affect where confidential letters and reports are posted. Parents and caregivers must also notify the school of any medical conditions so that if illness or accidents occur your child can receive the best medical treatment available. Please contact the school during school hours on 6847 4438 to amend your details.

K-6 News - Respectful Responsible Learners We would like to welcome back everyone from the two weeks’ vacation to a very busy, but rewarding term. The K – 6 students look fantastic in their full school uniform so thankyou to all parents and caregivers for supporting us by making sure each student wears the correct uniform. Our next Assembly is on Wednesday 30 July at 2pm in the JB Renshaw Hall. This is a K – 12 Assembly and everyone is invited to attend. Performances Over the next two weeks all K – 6 students will be participating in some different activities which will enhance their classroom lessons and learning. We are very fortunate to have Musica Viva this week, fully funded by the school Equity Program, a puppet show on Friday brought to us by the SRE group Outback Patrol and the Life Education Van which is heavily subsidised by the Macquarie Cotton Growers group and the school Equity program. We would like to thank all these groups for the continued support of our students. Also thank you to Mrs Val Soulsby for organising the Macquarie Cotton Growers funding. With this funding students only need to contribute $3 for the Life Education visit and book. CWA Students in years 5 and 6 who would like to enter the CWA Public Speaking competition should be thinking about their topic of choice and organising their points so they are ready ahead of time to participate. The competition will be held towards the end of this term and you will be informed of the exact date when confirmed Students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 this term will be working on the CWA poster competition featuring the country of study: Republic of Botswana. Children can find information at home, in the town and school libraries and during lessons. Teddy Bears' Picnic Kindergarten students were invited to visit the Warren Shire Library's Teddy Bears' Picnic on Tuesday and walked down with their teddy bears and favourite stuffed animals firmly in hand. They joined students from St Mary's, the Warren Preschool and Little Possums for stories and songs inside the library, with a guest appearance by the much loved Reading Bug. Afterwards they headed out in the glorious winter sun for a picnic. To everyone's surprise and delight the library had ordered a batch of specially made teddy bear cup cakes from talented local Lisa White for all to share. The event is organised annually by our Shire Library to promote familiarity with the Warren Library and encourage new members.

Musica Viva Visit There was music in the air last Tuesday when the wind quintent, ‘ The Chambermaids’, visited as part of the Musica Viva music in schools program.

Students learnt how the french horn, flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon work; how music can tell stories and even how to make their own back yard french horn with the help of a bit of garden hose, a tap fitting and funnel! The classically trained professional musicians all work regularly with Australia’s various symphony orchestras, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and other chamber ensembles but come together as ‘The Chambermaids’ to foster a love and appreciation of live music in schools throughout Australia.

SECONDARY NEWS

Wood work wonders There were some proud owners of new furniture amongst the families of Year 8 students at the end of last semester. Students undertaking the subject Design and Technology diligently worked on a woodwork project over the course of semester one and Mr Martin could not have been prouder with how the students applied themselves. "I gave them the challenge to make whatever they wanted to, with no restrictions, as long as the final product was good. They certainly exceeded my expectations. Jack Taylor's fishing rod holder in particular was a creative idea that met a real need in his home and I've heard his piece has generated a lot of interest. Who knows, it might even lead to a small business for him!" The students will now rotate with those who did Food Technology in semester one and will no doubt be watching keenly to see what their fellow students can come up with.

Book Week It is that time of the year when the Library becomes a hive of activity! Book Week is on in Week 6 (18-22 August) and we have many activities planned. The theme for this year is “Connect to Reading”. The Book Fair is on again and will be open all week between 8.30am and 3.15pm every day. We have hundreds of quality books for purchase. All children will be given the opportunity to visit the fair early in the week and will bring home a “wish list”. We hope as many people as possible will be able to support the fair as this support benefits the library as we are able to gain a percentage of the sales in books. We also welcome any donations of books to the library. Remember Christmas is just around the corner! Books make great gifts! We will once again be having guest readers in the Library at lunchtime throughout the week. The Book Week assembly is on Thursday 21 at 1.30pm in the school hall, followed by afternoon tea in the Library. We would like all children to dress up for Book Week as their favourite book character or something do with the theme. If possible, it would be fantastic if all children could bring their book with them or see the library staff this week to borrow one or put it aside. Mrs Ridley has a limited supply of costumes available for hire for $1. Children will need to organise this with her by the end of next week as it is too busy during book week.

We are also running a variety of competitions with some wonderful prizes on offer. These are not compulsory and are just for fun. Competitions must be into the library by Monday 11 August for judging. Winners will be announced at the assembly. Please contact us in the Library if you have any questions relating to Book Week. Premier’s Reading Challenge The challenge finishes at the end of August. To allow time for registration it is necessary for all reading logs to be in by the week after book week. If you child has been reading at home and is almost finished please encourage them to finish it if possible. Certificates are generally received by early December. Mrs N Whittaker - Teacher Librarian

NETBALL TEAMS PERFORM WELL U16’s Netball Team Warren Central competed in the State Central School’s Under 16’s Netball competition. The under 16’s team representing Warren Central School played a very polished game of netball, winning their first 3 games convincingly, beating Yeoval Central, Coolah Central and Walgett Community College. Warren Central had qualified for the semi-finals and were to come up against the older and more experienced Dunedoo Central team. It was a predictably tough came, goal for goal at first, pushing our girls to the limit, the Dunedoo side coming out winners. Warren Central came 3rd out of the 9 teams entered in the gala day on the day. Well done girls!! The Warren Central School Under 16’s netball team showed exceptional team work and team spirit, supporting and encouraging each other throughout the day. Thank you to Ms Rush who organised the day and coached the team. Thank you also to Mableah Fuller and Jo Fuller who helped umpire and the parents who helped with transport and cheered the girls along.

Open Netball Team has State Netball Carnival in sight Our Open netball team played brilliant netball to win the open division Western Region Central School’s Netball Carnival last term in Dubbo. “Our girls worked like a finely oiled machine; they were just so smooth,” said an excited coach Ms Rush. After three convincing wins the girls went up against Barradine Central School. In what was a nail-biting final the two teams went goal for goal for the majority of the game. In the end though, sheer determination pulled the girls through, with a four goal lead. “It was a great display of fast, slick netball and quite a number of schools’ players and coaches stayed on to watch” said Ms Rush. The Central Schools State Final title is now in the girls’ sights and they will be counting down till August 22 when winners from the southern, northern and western regions of the state will meet in Dubbo. Coach Ms Rush complimented all the girls who participated in the two day carnival. “They showed exceptional team work and team spirit and conducted themselves in a manner in which I was proud.”
