PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As we go to press this week we find ourselves on the eve of our 50th Anniversary celebrations. This is certainly an exciting time but has also given me cause to pause and think about the importance of the local comprehensive high school in its local community.

The local high school has the potential to inspire, nurture that inspiration and then encourage its students to pursue it in the full understanding that they have the skills to be successful.

For fifty years Pennant Hills High School has provided exposure to ideas, activities, and fields of knowledge that one might never have encountered otherwise. Whether that is through the 3 R’s (reading, writing and arithmetic) or the creative and performing arts, through sporting endeavours or social justice, Pennant Hills High School continues to invigorate. Consequently the graduate of Pennant Hills High School has the skills and more importantly, the deep understanding of the importance of giving back to their community. It is this partnership between school and our local community that has continued to reinforce the excellent reputation our school has in the local area. Coupled with huge involvement from the local community Pennant Hills High School has provided an environment that encourages its students to take risks, comfortable in the knowledge that there is a safety net that envelops each student as they progress through school. So it is with great anticipation that I look forward to celebrating our 50

th year with students, staff, parents and friends

both past and present.

I would also like to acknowledge the huge commitment the organising committee have made to ensure the occasion is marked as it should be: Fiona Ackerman, Janelle Dennis, Marnie Finch, Janette Louis, Robyn Munari (class of ‘71), Roger Niccol and Brendan O’Byrne have all worked tirelessly on behalf of us all at Pennant Hills High School.

Last Sunday saw the Great Penno Reno team swing into action, work its miracles and consequently our school really is looking fantastic for tomorrow. The commitment and hard work of this team that work so relentlessly for our school really is very much appreciated and enriches the learning environment for our students and staff. This important parent partnership is very much valued by Pennant Hills High School and they have my great thanks.

The Pennant Hills High School Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Festival 2016 was an

outstanding success. The opportunity to walk amongst the artworks at the opening last Wednesday evening and have the pleasure of mixing with the artist as they spoke about their work was fantastic. In particular listening to Evie and Jacqueline highlighted the joy, intricacies and the sheer hard work of art making.

Congratulations to all our students who exhibited work and in particular to our Year 12 students with which this was the culmination of their Higher School Certificate Major Work. I would like to give huge thanks to our Visual Arts staff Janelle Dennis (Head Teacher), Kirstie Clark, Lauren Erickson and Michelle Livingston for the design, preparation and coordination of the Visual Arts Exhibition.

Friday evening concluded the CAPA Festival with the Year 12 Music Soireè. Once again I was blown away by the quality of the student performances to which we were treated. A variety of genre through classical, jazz and the more modern works were an absolute pleasure to listen to. In addition to family members in the audience it was also extremely pleasing to see the number of current and former Penno students who attended the performance to support their friends and peers. I would like to thank Carol Coomber and Christopher Nugent who have done a fantastic job in organising this event and working alongside our students as they prepare for the Higher School Certificate.

Spirit Week comes to a close today and I would like to congratulate our Student Representative Council as they worked so hard to preserve and inspire the Penno Pride of which I have heard so much. The SRC were ably led by Elizabeth Ford and Ashleigh Greer and I thank these two fine teachers for the energy and organisation they bring to the coordination of the SRC. I have been to the Pokemon Sausage Sizzle, eaten slices, cakes, cookies and pancakes including the purple variety, judged the Penno Short Film Festival and marvelled at the Pennant Hills High School multicultural extravaganza. School Sprit is certainly more than alive and well at Pennant Hills High School.

CAPA FESTIVAL WEEK

Thank you to all staff and students involved with the HSC Music performances and the Visual Arts Exhibition last week. Once again the CAPA Festival enjoyed strong community support and the students enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their considerable talents.

Each event in the CAPA Festival drew strong audience support. Many current and past students, staff, proud parents, grandparents, relatives and friends attended the festival.

The Visual Arts exhibition drew a large gathering on opening night. Everyone commented on the variety of artworks on exhibit and on the bold, joyful concepts and techniques on display. We had lots of groups and individuals visit the exhibition during school hours, including the K-6 students from Pennant Hills Public School, who visited the exhibition over the three days that it was open. The art exhibition offers our feeder primary schools a wonderful opportunity to visit their local high school for a culturally enriching experience.

Two Year 12 students, Jacqueline and Evie, spoke about their Collection of Works at the Opening Night ceremony. A copy of their speeches can be found on page 9.

The MPC looked amazing with the HSC musicians playing in our Soireè to a large audience whilst surrounded by the Visual Arts exhibition last Friday night. There were some highly entertaining performances on the night.

Thank you to Mr Warren, who attended each evening event of the CAPA Festival. His support of the Creative and Performing Arts is highly valued and much appreciated. Thank you to the senior students and their parents who contributed to the refreshments served on the nights of the CAPA Festival, to Harrison of Year 12 who entertained us so beautifully on the Grand Piano at the Visual Art Staff Morning Tea and at the Opening Night of the Visual Arts Exhibition.

Congratulations to our CAPA teachers, and in particular the teachers of Year 12 - Mrs Coomber, Mr Nugent, Miss Clark and Mrs Ackerman - who have once again, gone above and beyond to not only support me but also our Creative and Performing Arts students - helping them to achieve their best.

To all our Year 12 CAPA students - good luck for your upcoming HSC Examinations.

Congratulations Year 12 2015 Visual Arts student Slade, has had his ARTEXPRESS sculpture The Lure nominated for the Wilkins Acquisition Award for Excellence.

Slade’s sculpture was selected out of all the 2015 ARTEXPRESS artworks to form part of the art collection owned by the Department of Education. The collection consists of exemplar artworks dating back to 1975.

The artworks are loaned out to government offices around Sydney. Indications are that Slade’s sculpture may possibly tour the USA in 2017. A deserving accolade for an exceptional Visual Arts student.

Congratulations to Courtney and Shannon, Year 11 Music students, who recently performed at the Education Week Assembly at Thornleigh West Public School. They were commended for their fine performance on the day and are fine ambassadors for Pennant Hills High School.

Congratulations to Year 11 Drama and Ms Hickey for their wonderful drama production The Little Prince earlier this term. The time and effort that goes into such a production is extraordinary. Not only was the audience on the four evening performances truly entertained, Year 11 Drama students have had a fantastic introduction to the running of a complex drama event in readiness for their HSC year. Well done to all! As a side note, we were especially pleased to be able to use our new stage floor in the Drama Studio for this event.

Jacqueline Collection of Works - Beeeyond Yeoval

For me this art-making journey has been a very personal one, as you can see behind me, the basis of my work was inspired by my great grandparents who were well known and highly regarded Australian beekeepers in the 1940’s. They are the two figures looking down onto the bee frame in my first panel. I also wanted to create an awareness through my body of work about the importance of bees and migratory beekeeping to our environment and our lives because as I quote from Einstein, “If the bee disappeared off the face of the globe then man would only have 4 years of life left.”.

In 1947 they, along with their 5 children, departed from their home in Yeoval on a 6 week journey to the karri forests in south-west Western Australia, near Manjimup returning to Parkes 5 years later in 1952. To my great grandparents, beekeeping was their livelihood and their transcontinental migration was more a matter of necessity as the trees in NSW weren’t yielding enough honey.

One of the reasons why I chose beekeeping as my concept was because I had access to an abundance of resources. I had old family photos, old beekeeping equipment, and old documents of registration, awards, letters, queen bee packaging, and newspaper articles such as from the Australasian Beekeeper Magazine and the Australian Women’s Weekly, in which my great grandparents’ transcontinental migration was featured in. You may notice some of them attached to the bee frames. I also wanted my artwork to also be a sensory experience for the audience. As you look at the drawings, you can also smell the beeswax coming from the bees in the hive, and it will take you on a journey of your own, so you begin to reminisce about you own experiences in the Australian countryside.

I’m going to be realistic here too, the making of a body of work like many of you would know is a very long and tough process that requires a lot of attention and assistance at times. As my family like to joke about, for us it was a ‘family project’ not only because of the concept that we all hold so closely to us but also because when my artwork was at home I had a whole bunch of critics! They just said it like it was. Even though I may not have appreciated it at the time it was the kind of feedback I needed to further progress my work. My extended family also lent a helping hand. My grandmother, aunties and uncles were only a phone call away and were more than happy to provide resources and information. For those of you in the audience who are beginning their HSC BOW next year or are thinking of doing art for Year 12, I advise you choose a concept that you know really well, you love or is close to you. Like anything in life real ly, if you choose something you know, then there’s a great chance you will excel at it. You’ll also find as the going gets tough, you will stil l have that motivation to keep pushing through as you have a great interest in what you’re doing.

Secondly, try to be realistic. Don’t start out from the beginning, like I did for example wanting to make hundreds of bees. It just wasn’t going to happen because I needed to balance art with all of my other subjects as well, so it’s better to do less works that have strength compared to a lot of works which aren’t so good.

On an end note. I would have to say although it’s a long process completing a body of work, it is very rewarding to see your own work finally

hung on the wall, so congratulations to all the Year 12’s on completing their works. Thank you.

Jacqueline, Year 12 Visual Arts Student

Evie Collection of Works - Dare to be Different

My artworks are the big animal heads on the stage. I still remember when I was in Year 7 and looking at all the Year 12 works on the stage imagining mine would be there one day.

I must admit I had an idea of what I wanted to create for my body of work back in Year 10, just from visiting lots of galleries, which I suggest you next Year 12s do. Mum told me not to tell anyone in case they steal my idea. This would be the biggest kept secret I’ve had.

I believe Art can be anything you put your imagination to, which can then be reinterpreted by different audiences. The biggest success is to find your passion. You will then have a positive mind set and you will enjoy whatever it is that you’re doing. I knew that once I had developed my ideas into something huge, I would spend a lot of time producing those huge animal heads. I spent most of my lunchtimes bending wire, papier mâché-ing layers of paper and applying lots of paint. But I didn’t mind, I enjoyed making them. Art is my passion. But by the last head I was getting pretty sick of papier mâché. I pushed on. I had a lot of fun filming the animals with my friends in public places, especially seeing the reactions of randoms, making their day brighter. I know that my friends also enjoyed being a part of the film which I am so grateful for.

Dare to Be Different expresses the message it’s OK to be different, being the same to fit in is boring. Each of my characters represent a different aspect of teenage social issues and their development as they come out of their shells. Each animal has an aspect of their appearance changed - making them stand out in a crowd.

The lion represents rebellion. The giraffe represents trying to be someone you’re not - to fit in. The owl represents a fish out of water showing the struggles of making friends when you are shy. The gazelle represents sexuality, equality and gay pride. Lastly the hippo represents body image stressing that everybody is beautiful no matter what your shape or size.

Evie, Year 12 Visual Arts Student

SPORTS SHORTS…

Regional Athletics Carnival Congratulations to the following athletes who have also proceeded to the NSWCHS Athletics Championships: Nicholas – 100m and 110m Hurdles, David – High Jump and Kayla - Discus.

Year 7 and 8 Gala Days The Year 7 Gala Day went very well last Wednesday. Congratulations to all students on their excellent behaviour and great sportsmanship towards the other schools in the Zone. Everything went smoothly and most teams came back with very favourable results.

Students from Year 9 and 10 PASS classes did an outstanding job in coaching, refereeing and umpiring all the sporting teams from our school. Taking on these responsibilities is no easy task and we would like to thank all these students and their teachers for their contribution to a very successful day.

At the Gala Days Pennant Hills High School is responsible for the organising of Netball at Pennant Hills Park. The preparation before the time is extremely challenging, demanding and very time consuming. Jessica in Year 10 and her team Hannah, Caitlin and Meagan did an excellent job working out the draws and score sheets. Their responsibilities were to manage the processing of all results after each game, rotate the umpires, report and address any injuries and make sure that the general organisation of the day went as planned.

The Year 8 Gala day is on Tuesday 6 September and we wish all students, coaches, referees and umpires good luck for another successful day

Knockout Netball Gala Day A team comprising of Year 7 and 8 Girls will be competing in a Gala day on Wednesday 14 September at Garnet Adcock Park, Gosford. We wish them good luck in the competition.

NSW All School Taekwondo Championships Good luck to Harrison in Year 8 who will be competing in the NSW All School Taekwondo Championships on Saturday 3 September at St Ignatius’ College.

Open Boys Football Knockout The team played Lambton High School in the State Semi-final of the CHS Football competition at Valentine Park, Glenwood the head-quarters of Soccer NSW, last Wednesday. Our boys played well but were defeated 2-1 in a tight match between two well matched teams - with Lambton scoring the winning goal in the second last minute of the match. Izaack scored with a fine header from an Andrew corner.

Our boys displayed great teamwork and determination in a skilful and intense contest. They are also to be commended for their admirable sportsmanship.

Congratulations to the team on achieving Pennant Hills' best ever result in this competition. We scored 35 goals and conceded 8 in 7 matches. Izaack scored in every match, finishing with a total of 13 goals, while Jack scored 8 times. Andrew was an outstanding captain. The team was: Liam, Ewan, Taylor, Daniel, Anthony, Russell, Matthew, Jack, Oliver, Ryan, Shannon, Alec, Izaack, Cody, Jordan, Brad and Andrew.
