Issue 1 - Term 1 - Week 4 20 February 2014

From the Principal Great to Be Back In December, I had the opportunity to visit and revisit schools in England to discuss their learning and accreditation journeys as “Thinking Schools”. I was also able to share the wonderful and exciting work Warren Central School had

implemented in cognitive development and education during 2013. The visits to Wood Green Academy in Wednesbury and Gallion‟s Primary School in East London allowed me to see cognitive teaching and learning occurring in classrooms across the K-12 continuum. These innovations will continue to be implemented in classrooms across Warren Central School during 2014. The school is also continuing to invest in professional learning and technology that will improve the levels of engagement of the students. This year, we as a school, will be continuing the journey with our students and teachers on our accreditation as an accredited “Thinking School” with the University of Exeter in England. In doing so, we will become the first government school in Australia to be accredited. During 2014 we will continue to promote aspiration, achievement and attendance with our students and parents. When students aspire to a goal this allows them to follow the road towards achievement and ultimately succeed in the attainment of that goal. Mr Cade Wilde has returned in 2014 to coordinate the next phase of our technology revolution which includes the introduction of SmartTables in K-2 classes and our ET4L server.

Finally, I would like to thank all parents and carers who have entrusted us with the vital role of educating your children for the 21

Auscott’s Education Scholarship 2014 Congratulations to Taylor McCloskey on winning this year‟s Auscott Education Scholarship. The school and her parents are very proud of Taylor‟s achievement and wish her every success as she leaves to study Nursing/Mid-Wifery at CSU in Bathurst. Warren Central School would also like to sincerely thank Auscott Limited for their altruism and vision in supporting outstanding young people from rural and isolated communities. All small rural communities need young persons of the calibre of Taylor to be continual role models for others in the community. The future of communities in the “bush” depends on young people being supported with their further education so they may one day return to become the leaders of the future. Auscott Limited is to be applauded for making this happen. Warren Central School has a proud tradition in winning the Auscott Scholarship and we congratulate the fine achievements of some of our past winners: Maria Sutton (Doctorate in Archaeology), Janene Stephens (Bachelor of Physiology), Andrew Clarke (Veterinary Science), Jamie Moran – Davis (Bachelor of Accounting), Gabrielle Manga (Bachelor of Education), Katrina Robertson (Bachelor of Radiology), Wesley Hamilton (Masters of Physiology), Rhiannon Stephens (Bachelor of Sport Management and Tourism degree), Rebecca Murray (Bachelor of Business Management). PBL It was wonderful to return to see entries in the school‟s PBL mascot poster competition. Students and members of the community can submit a 3D sketch, model or drawing of their mascot and add a description of how it reflects our PBL values of Respect, Responsibility and Learning. I encourage all members of the school community to support this competition which closes on Friday 28 February 2014.

Parent Helpers Parents are welcome to assist in the classroom. Please contact your child‟s Class teacher, through the Front Office, if you are able to assist in this way. Walking Note Each Student is required to have a current „walking note‟ which enables your child to participate in all activities outside school grounds as well as an Internet note and permission note to be photographed. Permission Notes If your child receives a note please ensure that it is returned to school by the due date whether they will be attending OR will not be attending. This makes it easier for the staff member who is organising the activity to finalise details. For example if your child is unable to attend or represent it may be an opportunity for another child to be invited to participate. Canteen To assist with the sorting of recess and lunch orders from the Canteen, please ensure your child‟s name and year is on the paper bag. It is the parent‟s responsibility to ensure that each child‟s recess and lunch order/s are written out on a paper bag. These are placed in the metal box in the Shelter Shed before Morning Assembly and then sent to Canteen. Orders are then delivered to classrooms prior to the breaks. All food for recess and lunch MUST be pre-ordered before 10 am. There will be an opportunity for Year 1 to Year 6 students to go to the Canteen to purchase snack items only after they have eaten their lunch. Kinder students MUST order all their food requirements. The Year 1 – Year 6 students who have money will be asked to line up and will then be escorted to the canteen by a staff member. They will NOT be able to go to the canteen at recess. End of Day Routine If you are picking up your child at the end of the day, Parents and Carers are asked to collect all students at the front of the school in Chester Street. Students should NOT be collected from the Bus Bay in Hale Street. Parents collecting K – 6 children are asked to wait outside the Primary entry gate. This will assist with congestion in the walkway. All K-6 students leave the school via this walkway. Bike riders then collect their bikes and must walk them through the main entrance of WCS. This is a Work Place Safety issue.

Bus Lines Children travelling on a bus in the afternoon are to line up outside Room 12 (5/6 classroom) and will then be escorted to the Bus Bay, and are supervised by a member of the Executive until all the buses have departed. Lunches Parents delivering lunches to their children during the day are asked to leave the lunches at the Front Office as children are not allowed to go outside the supervised area or collect lunches from cars. Please note carefully

break times so that students have their food in allotted times. Children tend to be hungrier at recess! Please consider packing a more substantial recess, particularly as they adjust to not having access to the fridge at any time, with their return to school!! Lost Property We rapidly accumulate a huge pile of clothing each year at school. PLEASE LABEL ALL YOUR CHILD’S BELONGINGS SO THAT WE CAN RETURN CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT TO THE RIGHTFUL OWNERS!!!!! There are a large number of uniform items still at school from last year! Band Aids included in bags help with blisters on feet that haven‟t been in shoes all holidays! Tissues: All class teachers would appreciate each child bringing in a box of tissues each term for the classroom. NAPLAN National Assessment for Literacy and Numeracy are held in term 2 every year for students in years 3 and 5. The dates for NAPLAN in 2014 are;

Language/Writing Tuesday 13 May

Reading Wednesday 14 May

Numeracy Thursday 15 May Jumbunna Jumbunna is our fortnightly newsletter which contains information about events that have occurred and any up and coming events as well as an updated calendar. Please take the time to read through this and find out what is happening at your school. Information can also be found on the Warren Central School Website; www.warren-c.schools.nsw.edu.au. So don‟t forget to check this out also! Merit Cards Our „True Colour Welfare System‟ incorporates the awarding of Merit Cards as a positive way to reinforce appropriate behaviour and acceptable work habits and includes all students, K-12. • When students submit 10 merit cards, stapled,

clipped together or placed in an envelope, they are awarded an Assistant Principal Award at the K-6 assemblies.

• Students submit their Merits by placing them in the “Star” box found on the front bench in the Library.

• Three AP awards earn a Principal award. These are automatically awarded so students do not have to submit their 3 AP awards.

• Eligibility for nomination for Bronze, Silver and Gold is based on consistency of behaviour, uniform, attitude, attendance and citizenship.

• As a POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING school we value RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS.

Each New Year offers new experiences and challenges. We look forward to all that 2014 holds for our School and the wider School Community.

Ms J. Reeves – Assistant Principal Mrs L. Westgarth – Relieving Assistant Principal

News from the Library It is great to see so many children borrowing from the Library already this year. It is essential that all K-6 have library bag to be able to borrow. Not only does this protect the books it also helps if their book is misplaced. Children in K-2 are able to borrow one book, 3-6, two books, 7-10, three books and senior students 6 books. If your child finishes their book quickly they can always borrow another book in their own time, not just in their library lesson. Premiers Reading Challenge All children will be given the opportunity to participate in this fantastic program again this year. The school can register in early March enabling online entries of books that have been read. Children are also able to commence reading now if they wish. Further information will be given to children at school in upcoming weeks. Further information including booklists and privacy information is available on the official website at https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html School Library Blog If you are interested in finding out a little more about what happens in our library then why not visit our library blog at:

Children enjoying “Library Time” at Lunchtime

Book Club 2014 Our school library provides a fabulous resource for students and parents to tap into quality books on a weekly basis. In addition Mrs Ridley in the library runs the Scholastic Book Club. Every month your child is sent home a selection of book club catalogues that advertise books and learning aids, usually at prices well below what you would find in book shops. There are reading sets for those just beginning reading, fiction and non-fiction books

for all age groups. The catalogues are well worth checking out every month to pick up specials you can always put away for gift giving at a later date. The first issue of catalogues was distributed last week but if your child did not bring any home, feel free to call Mrs Ridley in the library. Orders for this issue will close 21 February. Mrs J. Ridley – Library Assistant

Welcome to School Banking 2014 Did you know we have a School Banking program? It aims to teach your children about the importance of putting a little away every week. An added bonus is that our P&C earns a commission on the deposits made so the more bankers we have the more we earn! If you would like your child(ren) to commence weekly banking, here are the steps:

Open an account for your children at the Commonwealth Bank (or use an existing one if they have one.)

Send in their bank book and money each Tuesday to be handed to their teacher. If students are in Secondary, they may bring their bank book to the library first thing Tuesday morning.

Your child‟s deposit books will come back with a token that should be kept in the bank book. Once your child obtains ten of these they will be replaced with a gold token. When your child would like to redeem a prize (see the rewards sheet taped inside your child‟s envelope for what's available), you simply leave the gold token in the wallet and also include the completed rewards order form. Note that not all rewards are available every term. Our school banker places one order per term at the end of the term so prizes will hopefully be sent back to the school by the beginning of the next term.
