About the Film

“A poignant and inspir ing look ins ide Israel i soc ie ty. A must-see.” - natan sharansky, aUthor, hUMan r IGhts act IV Ist

Israel InsIde: How a small natIon makes a BIg dIfference is a new feature length documentary that examines

the posit ive characteristics of Israeli society from a humanistic, psychological and emotional perspective. this insightful

and uplift ing documentary sidesteps the usual conversation of polit ics, confl ict and violence, and tells the story of the

Israeli people – whose resi l ience has propelled Israel to the forefront of world innovation and progress.

DespIte DaIly challenGes ranging from l imited resources to security needs, Israeli creativity and inventiveness help

make the world a better place; Israel has made signif icant advancements in the fields of science, environment,

medicine and technology, and has shared these developments with the rest of the world.

how did this happen? What underlying growth factors have given rise to this

small nation’s tr iumph over adversity?

the 55-MInUte fIlM Is hosteD by Dr. tal ben shahar who gave up a unique distinction as harvard University ’s

most popular lecturer to return to his native-born country, Israel. In the fi lm, ben shahar explores the core character

strengths – called “actualizers” – that enable Israelis to succeed against incredible odds. through tal’s eyes we

explore the deep-seated values such as education, family and responsibi l ity to the world (a Jewish concept known as

‘tikkun olam’), which directly contribute to Israel’s accomplishments in the economic, technological and humanitarian

spheres. and while none of these actualizers are in and of themselves unique to Israel, in combination, they are

bringing about an almost unparalleled progress, success and contribution to the world.

Israel InsIde features interviews with leading entrepreneurs, academics, and polit icians including Jerusalem Mayor

nir barkat, rabbi lord Jonathan sacks, sir Martin Gilbert, prof. alan Dershowitz, prof. Jacob frankel, tamar Jehuda-

cohen and shai agassi .

“Israel per capita is the most creative and innovative country on the face of the earth”GeorGe GIlDer – aUthor, “the Israel test” (natIonal reVIeW JUly 30, 2009).

the technology coming out of Is rael is being used to connect the world, green the planet, saves l ives and have

fun, but this innovation revolut ion goes beyond economics. Israel is , surrounded by enemies, have turned a desert

with hard ly any natura l resources into a f lour i sh ing, product ive and car ing soc iety. th i s can be att r ibuted to a

number of character strengths cal led “actual izers”.

faMIly: our famil ies often provide us the confidence to fulf i l l our potential. confidence is the abil ity to hold onto

our beliefs, and to have the resi l ience and conviction to pursue our goals, aspiration and dreams. Israelis are often

blessed with a supportive family environment and this feeling of family permeates Israeli society.

aDVersIty to aDVantaGe: crucibles are extremely harsh experiences that test people by pushing them to their l imits

and beyond. the resi l ience of Israelis to withstand and bounce back stronger from crucibles has helped generate

incredible innovation that addresses some of the world’s most challenging problems.

chUtzpah: chutzpah: it can be rude and in your face. It’s about coming through the window when you have been

thrown out the door. In a posit ive sense, chutzpah is about not taking “no” for an answer. Israelis tend to challenge

the status quo by being direct and straight at the expense of being diplomatic.

eDUcatIon: learning, the pursuit of questions, and the openness to multiple answers, have always been values to the

Jewish people. Israelis bring the ancient tradition of torah learning through questioning and debate to every thing

they do. this creates a passion for education and leads to “out of the box” thinking.

takInG actIon: an idea has no value if it cannot be realized. Israelis are dedicated to taking ideas and turning them

into actions, and bring a sense of urgency and mission to everything they do. they str ive to learn from and bounce

back from failure.

responsIbIlIty to the WorlD (tIkkun olam) : tikkun olam l iterally means “to repair the world”. from an early age,

Israelis are taught to take responsibi l ity, not only for themselves, but also for others. for Israelis, tikkun olam means

reaching out beyond their own community and making dynamic humanitarian contributions to the global community.

these “actualizers” have not only made Israel what it is, they also have the potential to help us all enjoy happier,

more successful, more productive l ives. through them we can make the world a better place.
