In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalam Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Dear Families and Friends,

There are numerous types of literacy programmes from individual teaching experience to popular educational theory. All the same, no matter what programme is chosen, an effective literacy programme should always incorporate six basic components: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing.

With this understanding, our valued teachers keenly help students build confidence in their ability to comprehend content-area texts, by providing a supportive environment and making literacy experiences more relevant to students’ interests, everyday life, and important current events. Enjoy the photos in this newsletter to observe some of the many methods our valued teachers use to engage students into learning.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Engaging students in fun-filled activities improve the learning outcomes.

Reception A

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge”

Year 1Our year 1 students began writing their very own recount ‘On the weekend …’. Students were much excited to express their experience in writing. They shared their writing with the class thereafter.

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge”

2

Recognising and acknowledging different cultures

Reception B

We use pop-up pirate to practice our tricky, non-decodable words. We read a peg and then push it into the barrel...and sometime the pirate POPS!

We sound talk (sound out) and blend simple words and feed them to our robot. Oral blending and segmenting help us hear and articulate sounds clearly.

We use letter tiles to build sim-ple words. Sometimes we know what a sound looks like, but our hands aren’t quite strong enough to write it carefully yet.

Year 2In our Year 2 class, students learn and increase their literacy skills through practical tasks and written activities. In this photo, the students are collating words that have similar meaning (synonyms). They were fully engaged in this writing activity and some students were observed helping their friends solve the task.

This activity will help them find alternative words to use in their sentence writing while expanding their vocabularies. The more students read and write, the more students broaden their vocabulary and can articulate concepts accurately and more effectively to others inshaaAllah.

Year 5AStudents listened to the Procedure text created and followed the steps given. The end-product is compared between the participating students. Feedback given to the procedure text, in terms of word choice and sentence structure.

PRIMARY SCHOOLYear 3To incorporate our weekly spelling words, Year 3 students love to play “Buzz Off” whenever we have a few minutes to spare! This is a fun and engaging elimination-type spelling game where students verbally spell out the given words until there is one winner left. It is a great way to accommodate for different learning styles as some students remember spelling verbally better than in writing. It is one of our favourite games!

HIGH SCHOOL

“High school literacy is a whole school matter not just for English Teachers to take on!”

Literacy occurs inside and outside of English classes. It exists in all subject areas like HASS, Maths and Science. Literacy is also learnt in various ways. Here is a preview of some of the interesting activities done in HS classes.

Making Literature Alive!

In Year 7 English, we have been studying the novel “Wonder”, writing and sharing funny stories and baby photos of how the children “Came to Life”, preparing oral presentations of Favourite Star War Characters and Creating their own Star War Creature Creations.

The year 7’s was also asked to collect and to swap “The Little Tree House Books” miniatures they obtained from Coles Supermarkets so as to encourage the love of reading and to help improve their reading for meaning.

For the Year 8s, in order to get students excited and make reading Hatchet relevant, we have focused on different writing prompts every week where students used imagination and critical thinking to solve issues and reflect on them through writing creatively.

Think and Create!

Year 7’s HASS in the subject of Civics and Citizenship, students have learnt about the state coat of arms and the significance of its symbols. Students had been busy creating a new coat of arms and explaining their thinking and layout in a paragraph.

Year 8’s HASS Geography, students have extended their poetry skills by writing Acrostic Poems describing various Landscapes students have chosen.

Spelling Police!

Spelling Fun in Year 7, 8 and 9: Every week, one student is assigned as the ‘Spelling Police’ who is responsible for testing other students’ spelling words and definitions. Peers then work together to finish the literacy tasks and practice the list words. Students have become more enthusiastic about spelling and have shown improved use of vocabulary.

Friendly Debates

The Year 9 students are practicing how to construct strong arguments for their debates. Last Friday, students learnt how to rebut the opposition and state their own position using examples and explanations. Students work in groups to identify as many points as they can and prepare their arguments before engaging in the debate. In the process of the debates, students practiced effective listening and critical thinking skills.

Language in Advertisement

In Year 10 English, we have analysed the language of advertisements used to persuade consumers to purchase a product or service. Students then designed their own products and created advertisement posters to promote it.

Reading opens the door to unlimited knowledge
