TRIP TO KUALA BELALONG FIELD STUDIES CENTRE 10th - 12th April 2011
On 10 March 2011, eighteen upper secondary students from Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hasan accompanied by two teach-
ers, went on a field study trip to the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre which is situated within the Ulu Temburong National Park by the Belalong River. From Bangar, the entourage traveled 18 km by bus to the Outward Bound Brunei Logistic Centre where they continued their journey upriver by long boats called temuai to the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre, which is a 35
minutes breathtaking ride away.
For the next four days they were hosted by two lecturers from UBD who had planned a packed and exciting itinerary for these lucky students. The students and teachers were housed in a dormitory in the centre. After settling down on arrival, the students were briefed on the next day‟s activities. After a hearty breakfast the next morning, the lecturers took them hiking on a guided trail called the Ashton Trail where they were to discover the beauty and wonders of the equatorial rain forest. The Ashton Trail was made by Ashton, a British in 1960 when he came to Belalong to carry out his research on the rain forest. The lecturers entertained the eager youngsters who have never been in a forest before, with stories and facts about the flora and fauna of this forest, which is just a close distance away from the centre. The students were divided into five groups and each group was assigned two specific tasks to be carried out while exploring and studying the terrestrial ecosystem along this trail. The students carried out their tasks collecting data and looking for plant and animal specimens with much zest and enthusiasm. After an exhausting but exciting 3 hours in the jungle, the whole group returned with plenty of newfound knowledge, photographs and a love of nature. Indeed, the students had a direct experience of the natural environment of Brunei besides gaining knowledge on the natural history of the Brunei forest. They will never look at a forest the same way again. After lunch and some rest, the lecturers led the troupe to the Canopy Walkway, which is located downstream 5 minutes away by boat. The trip to the Canopy Walkway was rather difficult and tiring because the path was very steep. However all of them made it. The walk high above the ground among the trees on the Canopy Walkway was an eye opener for the students and teachers alike.
The next morning saw the students, armed with fishnets and measuring instru-ments, wading in a tributary of the Belalong River to investigate and study the river ecosystem. Again, they were divided into five groups and were dispatched to different parts of the stream to collect as many animal specimens as they can and taking measurements of some abiotic factors that relate specifically to the stream water. Their tasks was to investigate the adaptations of the stream organ-isms to the environment, to analyse the relationship between the living organisms and the abiotic factors measured and finally to make conclusions on the types of life that is supported based on the quality of water they live in. After dinner that night, the students made a presentation of their findings after much preparation analyzing the data, The two UBD lecturers guided them through their presentations asking probing questions and these helped them to open up their minds and gaining new knowledge about how to carry out field studies and to make proper conclusions and presentations. Undoubtedly, the stu-dents gained invaluable experience doing the research and presentations. The students did not sleep much that night, savouring their last night at the cen-tre entertaining themselves and just enjoying the cool clean air. The next morn-ing, they packed their bags and said goodbye to an unforgettable and exhilarat-ing experience.
