C.W. 5.4.2020 Addition of Large numbers

Addition of large numbers is the same as for smaller numbers. The numbers we add are

called addends and the answer in addition is called the sum or the total.

The properties of addition of large numbers are also the same as for smaller numbers.

We can add numbers in any order and still the sum will be the same. Eg. 3,092 + 1,200 = 1,200 + 3,092

Zero added to any number gives the same number as the sum. Eg. 7,689 + 0 = 7,689

Example 1: Add 61,327 and 39,855

C.W. 7.4.2020 Subtraction of Large numbers

Recalling what is subtraction and the related terms:

Terms like take away and find the difference imply subtraction. To answer questions like how many left, how many more, how many less, we do subtraction. Terms used in subtraction are minuend, subtrahend and the difference.

The number we subtract from is called the minuend. The number we subtract is called the subtrahend. The answer in subtraction is called the difference. 7 3 9 5 Minuend

Properties of Subtraction

A number subtracted from itself is equal to zero. 852 - 852 = 0 Zero subtracted from a number is equal to the number itself. 852 – 0 = 852 The properties of subtraction and the method of subtraction of large numbers are the same as they are for smaller numbers.
