Ayurveda, a 5000 years old Indian health care system is predominantly based on the illness and opinions of an individual. This traditional system of
medicine is now experienced worldwide as complementary and alternative system of medicine. Over the centuries, several Ayurvedic formulations as well as surgical procedures have been established for the management of numerous diseases and disorders.
Yoga is based upon a profound philosophy of life and consciousness. It is not a system of mere practices devoid of any theoretical background. It is safe to say that the philosophy of yoga is one of the greatest philosophies in the world and can be the subject for a lifetime of study and contemplation. It is important to reintegrate Ayurveda and Yoga in order to bring out the full healing and spiritual potential of each. Bringing Ayurveda with Yoga provides a Yogic and Vedic system of medicine to allow for the full healing application of all aspects of Yoga. It provides a diagnosis and treatment in harmony with Yoga philosophy, as well as a diet and herbal treatment that follow the spiritual approach of Yoga. Bringing Yoga with Ayurveda adds a spiritual and psychological dimension to Ayurvedic treatment, without which Ayurveda tends to get reduced to a physical model in which its full Vedic healing powers cannot be easily realized.
In the ancient time, Ayurvedic physicians prepared all Ayurvedic medicine by their own self as per the requirement of patient for the treatment. Therefore there was no any issue regarding the quality, safety and efficacy of formulations. But, due to commercialization as well as explosive population growth in the modern era, the preparation of a medicine by the pharmaceutical industry require more concern regarding the quality, safety and efficacy parameters of Ayurvedic formulations.
Like all other industrial products, pharmaceutical product is always subjected to very stringent and highly regulated Quality Control and Quality Assurance Tests. The whole purpose of these tests is to confirm and re-confirm “Quality”, “Purity”, “Efficacy” and “Safety in Use” of any pharmaceutical product. All these four parameters are equally important for any pharmaceutical product. There is also a need for extensive research to be carried so as to understand the reasoning and concept behind the classical principles related to drug administration and safety.
Finally, there is a need for increased research to provide evidence to the positive effects of Yoga on certain pathological conditions, we may acquire due to our busy lifestyle, work, diet, habit, injury, and exercise. Research and publications in the area of benefits of Yoga are still growing, but strong evidence-based research is recommended in the future. Therefore, we need to encourage new investigators to participate and conduct controlled clinical trials on benefits of Yoga on physical therapy interventions and its healing effect.
In the present time, what are the recent advances developed in the field of Ayurveda and Yoga therapy and what will be the future perspectives to develop these traditional systems of Indian medicine bounce back world wide.
Keeping in view, we are going to organize an International conference with the title “Recent Advances and future perspectives in Ayurveda and Yoga” at Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, Banaras Hindu University, Barkachha, Mirzapur on
th th8 and 9 April-2018.
