Sun City got a treat inthe form of a new weeklyFarmers Market in front

of the Orchard CreekLodge on May 26.The Farmers Market is

organized by Sierra FreshFarmers Market, and willbe held from 8 a.m. tonoon every Wednesdaythrough Aug. 25.

Billie Jean Salle is themanger for Sierra Fresh.She said the first day forthe market was an awe-

some day.Everyone is smilingand happy. Its a goodday, Salle said.

A variety of produceand crafts can be perusedat the weekly market, as

well as flowers and meat.Its been a good first

day. I cant complain,said Bob Sorensen.Sorensen and his wife,Shirley Field, own CoffeePot Ranch, and sell beef,pork and lamb raised inSheridan. There havebeen lots of people and apositive response, andpeople are actually buy-ing stuff and not just ask-ing questions.

Marilyn Sharp and Bet-ty Maxie were also ven-dors at the market, sellingtheir crafts. Sharp makes

bookmarks and lavenderand rose sachets from hermothers and aunts hand-kerchief collection. Maxiesews vintage aprons foradults and children.

I thought it was reallygood and we got a niceflow of people, Maxiesaid of the day. It was nottoo hot, not too cold.

At least 50 shoppers

were walking around themarket while The News

Messenger was there, andmany of them gushedabout how close the mar-ket was to their homesand the accessibility ofgood, local produce.

Its fantastic and fun. Ilike the fresh fruits andvegetables, and its just afun atmosphere with peo-ple in a good mood, said

Paula Fogg. It seems tome like they (fruits andvegetables) are freshpicked.

Jan Johnson was look-ing for organic produceand meats that day, andsaid she loves the freshfood.

Im glad its close. Thisis great, Johnson said. It(the food at the market)

tastes better and its fromthe farm to your table.

Summer time is justabout here, and althoughthe weather has been

playing tricks lately on us,it will soon be time forplaying in the sun andkeeping cool in the pool.

All of that sun and chlo-rine can wreak havoc onboth your hair and skin,though, so we talked tosome local experts abouthow to still have fun andprotect yourself from theelements.

There are also sometips for gardening andstaying fashionable thissummer.

say is to get a good sun-screen. What happens isphoto aging, and you canget hyper or hypo-pig-

mentation, which aredark or light spots on theskin.

Also, your texture getscoarse and you can getenlarged sebaceouspores.

We also have skin can-cer, which is one of theNo. 1 killers. So we wantto put on a good sun-screen and use mineral

makeup, which is a phys-ical sunscreen.

Use a 30 SPF sunscreen,and if youre out in thesun and sweating, youregoing to have to reapply.

Keep hydrated and stayaway from alcoholbecause its dehydratingand ages the skin. Stayinghydrated helps our wholesystem to operate correct-

ly and to detoxify, and itplumps the skin.Have antioxidants in

your diet so eat goodfoods like broccoli, redbell peppers, dark redgrapes. The foods high inantioxidants fight againstcell damage and free rad-icals that mess up theskin.

Get a spray tan, I know we like to have our skinbrown in the summer but

tanning beds and layingin the sun are not theways to go.

We do need the sun forvitamin D so go out in themorning, get your Vita-

min D and then put onsunscreen.

Aloe is a great naturalhydrator and condition-ing therapy for the skinand scalp.

be found in natural foodstores or some grocerystores.

Massage gently for afew minutes, rinse andcondition or leave on asan alternative to hair gel.

Though I hadnt typical-ly thought of The BrickHouse Coffee Companyas a place to go for lunch,

my mind was changedafter eating my middaymeal there last Wednes-day.

My husband and Isidled up the counter, andit took a good five min-utes for us to choose fromthe selection of cold andhot sandwiches.

After the barista behindthe counter raved aboutthe Moms Chicken SaladSandwich, I knew that

was the way to go, and thehubby chose the MitchellDeno pananni, which we

were told was very popu-lar.

As we waited for oursandwiches, we sat in atable by the window,

which made for primepeople- watching andseeing activity of down-

town Lincoln.The smell of coffee and

pastries also waftedthrough the air and themusic playing was funand cheerful. It was over-all a mellow place to relaxand eat.

Our food was deliveredright to the table and wenoted that the size of thesandwiches were the per-

fect size, not too smalland not too gargantuanlike you might get at othersandwich shops.

The Mitchell Deno fea-tured sourdough bread,honey ham, jack cheese,and secret sauce, grilledon sourdough bread.

Andy described thesandwich as cheesy andmelty, and said the house

salad was really good. Thesalad was topped withpecans, dried cranberries

and poppy-seed dressing.My sandwich was top

notch, as well. The MomsChicken Salad Sandwich

was chicken breast, celeryand whole grapes in adressing, served up on acroissant.

Unlike some chickensalads Ive had, this one

was not drowned out bythe dressing but had a

nice dressing-to-chickenratio. I also enjoyed thecrispiness of the celeryand the whole grapes.

As far as our drinkswent, we were both prettysatisfied.

Im pretty picky when itcomes to iced tea becauseit cant be too bitter orsweet and the iced tea Iordered definitely hit thespot.

Andy ordered an Amer-icano, which is something

he drinks on a daily basis,and he said the Ameri-canos he gets at BrickHouse are every bit asgood as or better than theones I drink elsewhere.

We finished off themeal with a warmed-upapple-pecan cinnamonroll, and the cream-cheese frosting madehaving it heated worth it.

To sum it up, BrickHouse is not just a placefor great coffee but for anice sit down lunch as

well.

No tomatoes until August? No melons forFourth of July? That may

well be the case this year.It doesnt take the

National Weather Serviceto tell us that it has beenan amazingly cool and

wet spring. As we head toward

summer there are predic-tions for more record lowtemperatures and morerain. Not to fear though,although the summercrops may be a bitbehind, the spring crops

are very happy in this coolweather.

The first of the cherriesare in. They arent assweet as they will be laterin June but they are per-fect for todays recipe,Cherry Clafoutis with

Almonds.

We love Clafoutisaround my house. Full ofdairy, eggs, and fruit, thisdessert also makes arespectable breakfast.

I have a couple of tipsabout the recipe: how topit cherries and how tocreate your own slicealmonds.

To pit cherries withouta pitter, first pull off thestem. Then poke a smallhole in the stem end withsomething the size of aten-penny nail. (I used anail for baked potatoes remember those?) Put thenail back through the bot-tom end and force the pitout through the stem end.It should come right out.

I cleaned a pound of

cherries in about sevenminutes using this tech-nique.

Next, the almonds.Sliced almonds dont grow

on trees. They have to besliced by a machine.I made respectable

homemade slicedalmonds by laying the nutflat and making twolengthwise cuts.

The slices arent perfectbut I also didnt have topay an exorbitant pricefor stale, packaged slicedalmonds from the store.

WITH ALMONDS

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups fresh sweet cherries,pitted (about 1 pound)

1 tablespoons kirsch (cher-

ry brandy)

1/3 cup chopped almonds

1 tablespoons butter (

tablespoon softened, 1 table-spoon cut into small pieces)1 cup whole milk

2/3 cup all-purpose flour, sift-

ed

1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon

granulated sugar, divided use

1/4 cup heavy cream

3 large eggs1/8 teaspoon almond extract

1/8 teaspoon salt

PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

with the rack placed in themiddle of the oven.

In a large bowl, toss the cher-

ries and kirsch together. Set

aside for 30 minutes, tossing

periodically.

Meanwhile, scatter the

almonds on a baking sheet

and toast, turning occasion-

ally, until light golden, 3 to 4

minutes. Set aside.

Increase oven temperature

to 400 degrees.

Grease a shallow round 11-

inch quiche or gratin dishwith 1/2 tablespoon of the

butter.

Combine the mild, flour, 1/4

cup of sugar, cream, eggs,almond extract, and salt in a

large bowl. Beat for five min-utes on medium speed to

aerate. Drain the cherries

and stir the liquid into the

batter.

Arrange the cherries in the

dish and pour the batter

over the top. Bake for 15minutes. Sprinkle the toasted

almonds and remaining 1

tablespoon sugar on top and

dot the surface with pieces

of the remaining butter.

Bake the clafoutis until

puffed and golden-brown,and a toothpick inserted in

the center comes out clean.

This should take between 35

and 40 minutes.
