Whats in store for Lincoln Arts in 2009? The organiza-

to Executive Director Claudia Renati. The first show of

the year features work by photographer Ciara McGaig.

The show runs from Jan.13 through Feb. 27. The non-

profit Lincoln Arts will hold its 22nd Feats of Clay inter-

Lincoln Arts is focusingon new, up-and-comingartists in 2009, accord-

    ing to Executive DirectorClaudia Renati.

Renati said she wants togive new artists an opportuni-ty to show their work and

hopefully bring new visitorsto Lincoln Arts, which is at580 6th St.

The first show this yearfeatures work by photographerCiara McCaig, Renati said.

McCaigs show runs fromJan. 13 through Feb. 27, witha reception for the artist onJan. 16.

Renati said this isMcCaigs first solo show.

    McCaig described having

her first solo show as incred-ibly exciting.

The show came about by achance of luck, McCaigsaid, because one of theLincoln Arts curators sawsome of her work and offeredher the show.

    McCaig mainly does por-

trait photography. Her showhere will feature fine-art por-traits of nine of her bestfriends.

    All of the photographs

were created for the LincolnArts show, McCaig said.

The show inspired her toproduce a mountain of newwork that push the boundariesof regular portraiture, McCaigadded.

All of these photos areclose to my heart because

these women are particularlyclose to me, McCaig said.

And theyre all fantasticallybeautiful women as well.

The nonprofit Lincoln Artswill also hold its 22nd Featsof Clay international ceramicscompetition and exhibit inApril and May.

Renati said, however, thatthe future of Feats of Clay is

in doubt following this yearsexhibition, due to difficult

    economic times.Were on an extremely

tight budget, Renati said.Lincoln Arts definitely needsnew sponsors and members.

The Feats of Clay exhibi-tion costs the center nearly$70,000 to put on, Renatisaid.

If Lincoln Arts does notbring in more sponsors thisyear, it will not only stop put-ting on the Feats of Clay eventbut may have to close downthe center as well, Renatiwarned.

If we dont get moredonations, we will lose thiswonderful event. Its the onlyinternational event in thiscommunity, Renati said. Ihope more people will openup their wallets and pocket-books for us this year.Community Christian Schools

    The Lincoln Public

Library staff hopes tosee residents of all ages

at both the downtown venueand the Twelve Bridgesvenue.

Darla Wegener, director oflibrary services, said the

library willcontinue theprograms itoffered in2008 for2009.

These pro-grams includethe MotherGoose on theLoose early-

literacy program, the twice-monthly movie night and theadult-reading program.

The library will also con-tinue its Summer Readingprogram this year, Wegenersaid. The program, whichbegins June 15, is designed to

keep children reading overtheir summer break.

In addition, the SummerReading program is open toboth kids and adults.

New this year at the librarywill be a party to celebratethe end of the SummerReading program. Wegenersaid she hopes Mayor SpencerShort will agree to attend theparty, which takes place Aug.1.

While no specifics havebeen set yet for the party pro-gram, Wegener said it willinclude entertainment andgreat prizes for program par-

ticipants. The Friends of the LincolnLibrary will also continue its

regular set of programs thisyear except one, said VicePresident Shirley Russell.

The organization has can-celed its Poetry Place pro-gram this year because theprevious coordinator steppeddown this year and no onewas found to replace her,Russell said.

The Friends of the LincolnLibrary has also added anoth-er book sale this year because

community members havedonated so many books,Russell said. The book sale

    will take place Jan. 16, 17 and18.

Wegener said she is hopingthat the more than 400 per-cent rise in library usage in2008 will continue in 2009.

If you havent been to thelibrary in a long time, its OK.We want you back, Wegenersaid. Were very communityoriented and love to see bothnew and old faces.

he Lincoln Parks andRecreation departmentis opening two new

public parks this year.No official date has been

set for the openings ofMachado Park and AuburnRavine Park but the city isputting the final touches onthem and they should beopen soon, said RayLeftwich, senior civil engi-neer for the City of Lincoln.

Machado Park, located at646 Downing Circle, should

be opening first as soon as

the first two weeks into thenew year, according toLeftwich

Were putting on the fin-ishing touches at MachadoPark, Leftwich said. Wemay open it to the publicwithin the next couple ofweeks as we finish it up.

The 3.5-acre MachadoPark includes a large play-ground area, a lawn area withpicnic tables and a walkingtrail. The playgroundincludes two play areas onefor 2- to 5-year-olds and onefor 5- to 12-year-olds.

Leftwich said the land-scape architect incorporatedan old oak tree on the site

    into the parks design.

The landscape architectdid a great job workingaround the oak tree. Theplaygrounds are built aroundit, Leftwich said. The matsat the playgrounds have oakleaf and acorn designs inthem to tie it all in.

The city is also putting thefinishing touches on AuburnRavine Park, located at 1300Green Ravine Drive, that will

open later in the spring,Leftwich said.

Leftwich said the reasonthe 10-acre Auburn RavinePark is opening later isbecause it includes a 2-acreopen-leash dog park.

We want to give the turf achance to really get a deephold before we let the dogsin. Leftwich said. If we letthe dogs in now, they would

tear up the new turf and makeit a muddy mess.

In addition to the dogpark, Auburn Ravine Parkincludes three exercise sta-tions.

The park also connectsthree segments of the citysbike trails, Leftwich said.

Auburn Ravine Park is avery rustic, natural environ-ment that makes use of theexisting walnut, oak and evena plum tree. Leftwich said. When youre back in thedog park area, you cant evensee the houses in the sur-rounding neighborhood.
