Winter Water FitnessLooking to increase strength and flexibility while getting a good cardiopulmonary workout? Registration for the Winter Water Fitness program begins Monday, Nov. 15, with classes starting Dec. 1.

Morning and evening classes are available and are Monday through Friday at the heated College Station Middle School Natatorium. Participants must be 12 years of age or older. The Winter Water aerobics class is part of Xtra Education, a joint venture of College Station Parks and Recreation Department and the College Station Independent School District.

Youth Basketball RegistrationRegistration for College Station’s Youth Basketball Leagues begins Nov. 15 and runs through Dec. 3.

The program is open to boys and girls grades pre-K through 8th grade. The eight-game season begins in January. Practices and games are held at various CSISD gymnasiums and each player receives a t-shirt and trophy for participation. Players can register in person from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Parks and Recreation Office at Stephen C. Beachy Central Park, or online at parksweb.cstx.gov.The cost is $55 per player.

FREE Freon Unit DayThe BVSWMA Landfill will be accepting Freon-containing units for recycling from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11. The service is free and households are limited to two units each. Freon will be extracted from refrigerators, freezers, and air-conditioning units, and the unit will be recycled as scrap metal. The landfill is located at 7600 E. Rock Prairie Rd. For more information, contact 979.764.3806 or [email protected].

Korean War Memorial DedicationThe new Korean War memorial Katchi Kapshida will be dedicated at 3 p.m. on Veteran’s Day (Nov. 11) at Veterans Park. The memorial’s focal point is a life-size sculpture of a Korean soldier and American soldier standing side-by-side.

Katchi Kapshida, meaning “We Go Together,” is the slogan of the long-standing relationship between the U.S. military forces and those of the Republic of Korea. It recognizes a military alliance that has stood for 60 years.

Much of the memorial’s funding was generously provided by six prominent Koreans, lead by retired Gen. Paik, Sun Yup. South Korea’s first four-star general, Gen. Paik and several other benefactors will be present for the dedication, along with retired U.S. Army Gen. John H. Tilelli, Jr., from Washington, D.C.

Computer Club for SeniorsDid you know College Station has a computer club to help senior citizens improve their computer skills? The group has grown from 20 members when it started in 2001 to almost 200 this year.The club is also free and features speakers from Texas A&M, Blinn College and local businesses.

The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Exploring History Lunch LectureCol. James R. Woodall, USA (Ret.), a former commandant of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, will discuss his book, “Texas Aggie Medals of Honor: Seven Heroes of World War II” at the Exploring History Lunch Lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at the College Station Conference Center, which is located at 1300 George Bush Drive.

The event starts at 11:30 a.m. A light luncheon will be served for $5 per person. The programs are videotaped and broadcast weekly on CSTV-19 (Suddenlink). The series is sponsored by WTAW, DeLucia Mail Services and HEB Tower Point Market.

The series will have a free bonus lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, when Glenn D. Davis will speak on his pictorial history “College Station” and his book “How We Lived in Wellborn Before Television.”
