We have a cat and he is something else Wersquore not sure what he is

but hersquos definitely something else

He and his sister showed up quite literally on our doorstep a few summers ago ndash skinny hungry and dying to be loved They managed to avoid getting eaten by my dogs who found them huddled together under a lawn chair on the patio We tried to find a home for them but by the time we had a taker it was too late We were attached

Most cats eat and sleep and cause a little mischief Frankly mischief would be a welcome relief from him Our Phoenix or devil kitty as most of our friends call him is now a couple of years old By

my calculations he has already blazed through at least 5 of his 9 lives

We recently celebrated Christmas in July The reason for that is that Phoenix has been unpacking one of our Christmas boxes It started with one stocking on the living room floor Within a week he had dragged 4 stockings 1 Santa hat and a 12-foot garland up from the basement

This isnrsquot all that surprising really Phoenix loves the holidays He always does something creative to get our attention On his first Thanksgiving he set his tail on fire Therersquos nothing quite like the smell of turkey pumpkin pie and burnt cat

On his first Christmas (the real one) he figured out how to perch on the branches so he could sleep in the tree Unfortunately he wasnrsquot adept enough

to manage this without knocking down and breaking ornaments every time It wasnrsquot long before our tree was naked except for the lights That is until he chewed on the cord and shorted them out He also figured out how to open our brand new freezer and climb in Wersquore not sure how long he was in there

but there were icicles on his whiskers Needless to say we lock the freezer now

On his first Memorial Day he gave himself a spiked hairdo We have no idea how he managed that but he looked quite jaunty This was after he had dragged my 5-pound wrist weights through the house and splashed around in the tub after my shower We assume this must have all been in preparation for some hot date

Our other cats play with their cat toys sleep in the cat bed get high on catnip and treat us with the proper balance of love and disdain as cats do Phoenix is much more complex than that We gave him a stuffed mouse a couple of Christmases ago and it has become his best friend He isnrsquot even interested in other toys but he carries his buddy around incessantly In fact we eventually started just calling it Buddy and if we ask him where Buddy is he goes and gets him He puts him in windowsills bathes him in the water dish talks to him and sleeps with him

When the hard drive on my computer went out last winter we had a terrible time getting it up and running again Even tech support couldnrsquot figure it out for a while At one point Phoenix jumped up on the desk hit a button with his paw and suddenly the set-up screen was working We figure he uses

According to the U S Fire Administration (USFA) there are simple life-saving steps you can take to ensure a safe and happy holiday By following some of the outlined precautionary tips individuals can greatly reduce their chances of becoming a holiday re casualty

PREVENTING CHRISTMAS TREE FIRESSpecial re safety precautions need to be taken when keeping a live tree in the house A burning tree can rapidly ll a room with re and deadly gases

SELECTING A TREE FOR THE HOLIDAYNeedles on fresh trees should be green and hard to pull back from the branches and the needle should not break if the tree has been freshly cut The trunk should be sticky to the touch Old trees can be identied by bouncing the tree trunk on the ground If many needles fall off the tree has been cut too long has probably dried out and is a re hazard

CARING FOR YOUR TREEDo not place your tree close to a heat source including a replace or heat vent The heat will dry out the tree causing it to be more easily ignited by heat ame or sparks Be careful not to drop or ick cigarette ashes near a tree Do not put your live tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks Keep the tree stand lled with water at all times

DISPOSING OF YOUR TREENever put tree branches or needles in a replace or woodburning stove When the tree becomes dry discard it promptly The best way to dispose of your tree is by taking it to a recycling center or having it hauled away by a community pick-up service

HOLIDAY LIGHTSMAINTAIN YOUR HOLIDAY LIGHTSInspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires bare spots gaps in the insulation broken or cracked sockets and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory

DO NOT OVERLOAD ELECTRICAL OUTLETSDo not link more than three light strands unless the directions indicate it is safe Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet Make sure to periodically check the wires - they should not be warm to the touch

DO NOT LEAVE HOLIDAY LIGHTS ON UNATTENDED

HOLIDAY DECORATIONSUSE ONLY NONFLAMMABLE DECORATIONS

All decorations should be nonammable or ame-retardant and placed away from heat vents

NEVER PUT WRAPPING PAPER IN A FIREPLACE

It can result in a very large fire throw-ing off dangerous sparks and embersthat may result in a chimney fire

ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREES

If you are using a metallic or articial tree make sure it is ame retardant

CANDLE CAREAVOID USING LIT CANDLES

If you do use them make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down Never leave the house with candles burning

NEVER PUT LIT CANDLES ON A TREE

Do not go near a Christmas tree with an open ame - candles lighters or matches

Finally as in every season have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home test them monthly and keep them clean and equipped with fresh batteries at all times Know when and how to call for help And remember to practice your home escape plan

Maybe itrsquos because hersquos the only male in a house full of female cats and dogs Maybe he has a little more curiosity than the average house cat Maybe hersquos something more than feline Wersquore not sure but hersquos ours and we love him And one thingrsquos for certain ndash as long as Phoenix is around therersquos never a shortage of entertainment

At the start of my adult life I had a choice to make God gave me all the brains I would ever need to

be successful He also gave me an alcoholic mother who died before I graduated high school and an early life spent in a series of relativesrsquo homes the first tolerating me for the money my father sent the second needing me to baby-sit my dying grandfather so she could continue working to pay off her house

I did not learn the value of caring from others It sprang up inside me like a strange flower a rose blooming in the desert and shaped me for some purpose whose importance may never be revealed at least to me Call it an epiphany or a miracle but at the age of 17 I decided that the most important thing I could do with my God-given intelligence was to have children and raise them well

There are those who say we do not make choices that our lives determine our paths as surely as the nature of physics determines an electronrsquos spin and that this illusion (of choice) is simply a result of our nature as self-reflective beings Others more aligned with the quantum dualistic nature of the universe understand that all is choice even if the exact moment of ldquochoosingrdquo can never be determined

Looking back from the age of 62 in poor health and even poorer financial state I still believe I made the right choice I have four remarkable children They are not financially successful but that was not something I taught them to value They are not doctors because medicine in this era is more about money than healing They are not stars of industry or corporate culture nor would I wish them to be This country has taken all the real value in life and turned it into some bizarre sort of financial incentive for living Houses are no longer homes but wealth-builders Possessions donrsquot make our

lives richer or easier but allow us to play the unending game of one-upsmanship with our peers Education once designed to make us more cognizant of the world around us is now focused on learning just enough to command higher salaries

My four children are intelligent literate compassionate aware human beings and the earth is better for their presence When I die I will be uplifted knowing they carry on my belief in the importance of every individual and every act No man is an island and nothing occurs without consequence We are all part of some greater whole which is diminished by the loss of every single thing from a broken old man to a species of butterfly If I didnrsquot believe this I would end it all today

There is a proverb which says ldquoBeware of asking for what you want You may get itrdquo We tend to pray for objects or events whose consequences may not be what we wanted or even expected This usually happens when we make hasty decisions or ask for things based on a need for personal gratification We say ldquoIf I had a job that paid morehelliphelliprdquo or ldquoIf only I could afford to get my hair professionally cuthelliphelliphelliphelliprdquo

Your Maker already knows what you need you donrsquot have to ask I have been financially strapped a number of times in my life but Irsquove never gone without the necessities and neither have my children I am happy I have arrived at wisdom through a long and sometimes arduous process of evaluation including self-examination and I know that a new car a 500-dollar dress or a weekend at a spa might give me momentary pleasure but not lasting joy When asked what I need at Christmas or on my birthday I always say ldquoI have everything I needrdquo And it is always true

ldquoNot very surprisingly from this background the physico-

chemical conditions on our own particular planet in numerous ways also seem fine-tuned to and more or less optimal for the emergence of life Earth has an atmosphere with a concentration of carbon dioxide that is high enough for the existence of carbon-based life but not so high that it creates runaway greenhouse effect

ldquoAt closer inspection we may realize that many if not most of the conditions that make the Earth a hospitable planet are consequences of its distance to the Sun which gives it a temperature that is suitable for higher life It has been estimated that if the Earthrsquos distance from the Sun was only 5 percent shorter it would have become a choking greenhouse and if it were 1 percent farther away it would have suffered eternal glaciations 12 Why then is it that the Earth is able to do this delicate rope walk Why is it located at exactly the right distance from the sun for it to thrive This is again related to the tun as a basic constant of nature inherent in the space-time organization of the cosmic Tree of Life We may understand the emergence of optimal conditions for life on Earth in terms of Keplerrsquos third law According to this law the distance of a planet from the Sun and thus by implication its habitability depends on its period of revolution around the Sun For the Earth this period of revolution is 3652422 days This period is close to the tun (and it is very noteworthy that the year slowly approaches the value of 360 days) 13 a constant that as we saw earlier on the galactic level the constants of the forces of nature have been fine-tuned to On the level of the solar system we are able to see the effects of this fine-tuning in a new and more precise way because of the immediate sensitivity of the habitability of our planet to the strengths of these forces

Because of the way the constants of nature are constrained by the Cosmic Tree of Life they do not allow for life to emerge at just any location

in the solar system Instead they are constrained so that all the conditions are optimal for life to emerge on a planet with a tun orbit since there on a local level its polar axis reproduces the Cosmic Tree of Life In orbits other than the tun orbit the conditions for biological evolution to higher levels will not be at hand Earth is hospitable to life because the constants of the four forces of nature as well as the tun constant were defined by the space-time organization of the Cosmic Tree of Life at the big bang Earth also has an orbit whose rate of revolution is defined by this tun constant This shows that the purpose of the universe to generate life existed from its very beginning with a focus on manifesting this exactly on planets with a tun orbit Our own particular Earth was ldquotaggedrdquo for life because of its tun orbit and life has not appeared here because of a series of innumerable randomly occurring events

ldquoWe have found that the values of the constants of nature have not been fine-tuned for life by accident but that these values are constrained by and logically follow from the fundamental space-time organization of the Cosmic Tree of Life This reasoning starkly highlights how decisive the choice of including or not including the tun and phi constants is for our perception of the nature of the universe For those who include them they become the basis of a new physics in which the design plan and purpose of the universe to create life is a logical conclusion For those who do not include them it may be possible to continue to present life as an unplanned accident hinging on a number of constants that just ldquohappenedrdquo to be right This is what some cosmologists have done to explain the emergence of life in our particular universe They have even resorted to suggesting that we are living in a ldquomultiverserdquo in which a zillion different universes with different constants have been generated at random They claim that we just happen to live in the one that is favorable to life Yet in this context such speculations testify to

how complicated modern science has become and how far it has strayed from actual empirical observations in its ambition to uphold the dogma of nondesign It also becomes clear that the randomism of modern science is a reflection of its predominant antitheistic ideology While anyone is entitled tohellipwhat we could call an atheist religion I see no particular reason that this particular ideology should be allowed to monopolize science and present itself as the only possible truth when in fact it does not foster clarity or simplicityhellip 121

For the universe to be able to generate life the constants of nature need to have relationships to one another within very narrow ranges which ultimately are subordinated to the space-time organization provided by the Cosmic Tree of Life We can be certain that many other constants than those already mentioned are also constrained by the space-time organization of the Cosmic Tree of Life We are here only beginning to formulate a theory of everything about the physical reality in mathematical terms What is important to note for our purposes however is that by definition such a theory must be a description of a universe with life and not one of dead matter This incidentally is also the only kind of universe that anyone has ever known to existrdquo 122 ~
