SHacia una econom
ía basada en el conocimiento
Towards an econom
y based on knowledge
ás avan-zadas a sistem
orld Econom
ic Forum. A
desarrollado el libro “Made in Chile: 50 casos de innovación”,
vadores chilenos.
One of the current challenges of our econom
y is to reach the necessary econom
ic growth for Chile to be at the level of
OCD
E countries. This requires a great effort and a new devel-
opment m
odel which, apart from
complem
enting the prog-ress m
ade, may add value to the econom
ic model based on
natural resources.
There is consensus that reaching the desired economic grow
th requires an econom
ic model based on know
ledge, so that suc-cess is assured through a technological change, a greater in-vestm
ent in R&D
by companies, the developm
ent of human
capital and the ability to innovate.
The international experience confirms this. A
n increased inno-vation capacity has led the m
ost advanced societies to econom-
ic systems driven by know
ledge, enabling them to reach high
competitive levels and long-term
economic developm
ent.
Am
ong the drivers determining the G
DP’s increase, grow
th based on the accum
ulation of productive factors (funds and em
ployment) is increasingly less im
portant. They are being re-placed by intangible assets, such as, actually, hum
an capital, technological change, know
ledge and innovation.
The experience of developed countries shows that a country
with m
ore strength in terms of innovation -that is, w
ith more
dynamic com
panies adjusted to their surrounding, and better trained w
orkers- is in a better position to face the current un-certainties existing in a global com
petitive environment.
From a total of 133 countries, in 2009 Chile w
as No. 30 in the
competitiveness ranking and N
o. 49 in innovation, according to the G
lobal Competitive Report of the W
orld Economic Fo-
rum. Even though it is the m
ost competitive econom
y in Latin A
merica, it w
ent down tw
o positions in competitiveness ver-
sus the previous ranking, while it w
ent from 56 to 49 in term
s of innovation.
There is still a long way to go if com
pared to the rest of the w
orld, and it is essential to promote innovation at national lev-
el. With this in m
ind, together with our partner, the Santiago
Chamber of Com
merce, and under the sponsorship of the M
in-istry of Econom
y, Innova Chile and Andrés Bello U
niversity, we
have drawn up the third issue of “M
ade in Chile: 50 Innovation Cases “, a book that em
phasizes Chilean innovative ventures in the field of the service industry.
We hope that this selection w
ill strongly inspire the leaders and act as a source of m
otivation for new Chilean innovating
entrepreneurs.

Soluciones novedosas y de clase mundial
World class novel solutions
itados, resulta imprescindible desarrollar
Some years ago, the Santiago Cham
ber of Comm
erce, together w
ith Fundación País Digital (D
igital Country Foundation), under-took the challenge of identifying exem
plary innovation cases in our country, docum
enting them and dissem
inating them as con-
crete proof that creative energy is alive and well in Chile and is
capable of transcending frontiers in the form of viable and suc-
cessful projects.
For a small country far from
major w
orld markets and w
ith limi-
ted resources, it is absolutely essential to develop competitive
advantages in rendering international services. Such advantages, increasingly scarce, usually com
e from innovation.
In this third edition of “Made in Chile”, w
e can already perceive the effects of public and private policies supporting creative entre-preneurship and resulting in contributions to the creative process and the developm
ent and implem
entation of companies and in-
novative projects.
Nonetheless, the business environm
ent is still difficult and so-
mew
hat unfriendly, either due to cultural barriers, our educa-tional system
that makes us shy aw
ay from risks, labor m
arket conditions or the bureaucracy involved in the com
pany-crea-ting process.
Fifty exemplary accounts of innovation illustrate these pages,
reminding us once again that in Chile it is possible to design
- and successfully implem
ent - novel, world-class solutions not
only to local requirements but also to developed and som
eti-m
es distant markets.
This made us think of the follow
ing evident question: if these notable innovations that w
e have been documenting for the
last three years have blossomed in an apparently spontaneous
manner, how
many projects, and w
hy not say it, industries, could flourish in our country once national innovation strategies have been consolidated? A
nd even more so, w
hat if such strategies w
ere to be strengthened and complem
ented by a comprehensi-
ve and aggressive country outlook which encom
passes all areas involved in the developm
ent of innovative entrepreneurship, such as investm
ents in R&D, com
pany opening and closing pro-cesses, educational program
s and methodologies?
Finally, we m
ust never forget gratitude, in this case to the 50 inno-vators w
ho contributed to this book, for their courage and vision, for their perseverance in seeking out that creative flash, and for transform
ing their ideas into successful projects that add value to society.
We m
ust also thank our partner in this venture, Fundación País D
igital, and those who have m
ade it possible to materialize it: the
Ministry of Econom
y, CORFO
and Andrés Bello U

eneration of value and growth opportunities
iento, y nosotros estamos convencidos
presas exitosas, audaces, líderes, modelos a im

Nos sentim

Andrés Bello U
niversity is honored to be participating in the book “M
ade in Chile.” This edition seeks to bring together and dissem
inate fifty successful cases of service exportation, the hallm
ark of which is the innovative capacity at the service of
the country. It is an initiative that introduces us to individuals w
ho dared to innovate and begin an adventure in their lives.
We are convinced that in today’s society, innovation is funda-
mental for generating value and grow
th opportunities. That is w
hy in our institution we instill the im
portance of entre-preneurship and innovation in our students, since w
e believe that it is a w
ay of contributing to the development of the
country and the basis for creating solid companies that help
to increase competitiveness in Chilean society.
The anecdotes contained in this book speak of the individuals w
ho w
ith effort,
drive and
perseverance have
become
pioneers in their different spheres of action, with a w
ide-eyed view
of the world, setting the exam
ple for potential future innovators w
ho seek to follow the sam
e path for the purpose of contributing to a better Chile.
Despite being a sm
all country, these fifty cases show us that
where there is a w
ill, there is a way, that capabilities can be
transformed into ventures, and all you need is to feel passion,
be creative and perseverant, and strive to overcome adversi-
ties and, through innovation, generate successful, bold and outstanding com
panies that are models to be im
itated.
We are proud to be participating in this book and w

hich w
e strive to instill day by day in Andrés Bello U

Conectividad total desde el sur del mundo
“Innovar es correr riesgos controlados”, dice Rodolfo Soria-G
alvarro.
Junto a sus socios Roberto Musso, A
lfon-so Cádiz y Luis G
Soria-Galvarro.
La idea se plasmó en la em

Intense development of hum

Five years ago, Chile was not included in

from this qualified-labor intensive sector.
This is the case of Oracle Corporation, the

economic stability, the legal environm

made
the difference
against other possible locations in the region.
In their facilities situated in the Huechura-

Oracle applications.
A total of 250 highly specialized profes-

10 countries work
at Oracle, w

“The global service industry permits us to
develop human capital in such a w

tive of our capability of working globally,”
said Sacha Bocic, director of Oracle Chile.
On this basis, Chile is putting an end to de-

to other global services of higher added value and at a greater rate of research and developm

Aguas cristalinas
menzó a investigar y a experim
entar hasta encontrar una solución am
bien-talm
ente amigable, que utiliza m
enos productos quím
icos y 50 veces menos
lgarrobo, don-
de se comprobó su viabilidad y quedó
registrado en los récords Guiness com

“Innovation is to pose a new problem
and then persevere until finding a solu-tion,” said Fernando Fischm
ann, found-er of Crystal Lagoons.
Inspired by the tropical waters, this bio-
chemist and real-estate businessm
an created
a technology
permitting
to m
aintain large water bodies in crystal-
line condition at a very low cost. In the
beginning, Fischmann looked for solu-
tions that added value to sea shores that w
ere not suitable for bathing, such as m
any places in the Chilean coast due to the strong w
aves and the cold water
temperature.
As the available alternatives w
ere fi-nancially im
possible, he began to study and experim
ent until reaching an envi-
ronmentally friendly solution using less
chemicals and 50 tim
es less energy. This technology can be applied to sea w
ater, and in the case of fresh water, it
requires half the amount of w
ater per hectare used in a park or green area.
The idea was im
plemented in 2007 in
the tourist and real-estate project San A
lfonso del Mar, in A
lgarrobo - a beach resort - w
here its feasibility was proved,
and which w
as registered in the Guinness

Seeds for the world
Located in the region of Arica and Pari-
nacota, the Azapa Valley is one of the
most im
pressive eco-systems in Chile.
Mangoes, olives and other fruits grow
in this green strip that lies in the m
iddle of the extrem

a desert. The exceptional conditions ex-plain the interest of the Chilean subsid-iary Pioneer H
i Bred, one of the most im
-portant com
panies in the world in term
s of developm
ent, production and sale of seeds that belongs to the agro-chem
ical m
ultinational company D
uPont.
Pioneer was one of the first com
panies to produce export seeds in large scale during the N
orthern Hem
isphere winter.
Within the m
ultiple location strategy, in 2009, they inaugurated a seed research center, including a laboratory for tissue cultures in the A
zapa valley, as an alter-native to their research centers in tropi-cal clim
ates located in places such as H
awaii or Puerto Rico. It is an investm
ent of U
S$ 19 million, w
hich includes public subsidies provided by CO
RFO.
Pioneer seeks to develop research in Aza-
pa leading to have different plantations in the year, reducing the period required for the creation of new
varieties. Addi-tionally, the research in-situ w
ill permit to
find plantation methods adjusted to ad-
verse soil and water conditions, such as
those prevailing in the region. This is the result of the need for generating strong and highly productive varieties, thus re-sponding to the food requirem
ents of an increasing w
orld population.
The facilities cover a 2045-m2 process
plant, including equipment and special-
ized machinery; a highly technological
laboratory and general offices. N
early 60 hectares, som
e owned and som
e leased, are planted today, and the extension could substantially grow
in the future thanks to the different program
s that are expected to be fostered.
