THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray.

O God, who before the passion of thy only-begotten Son didst reveal his glory upon the holy mount: Grant unto us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GODI

The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson.

THE FIRST LESSON Elijah taken up to heaven and succeeded by Elisha • 2 Kings 2:1-12

Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you?" And he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent." Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here; for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you?" And he answered, "Yes, I know; be silent." Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here; for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you." Elisha said, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit." He responded, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not." As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, "Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL PSALM Sung by the choir Deus deorum • Psalm 50:1-6

Setting: John Stainer 1 The LORD, the God of gods, has spoken; * he has called the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, * God reveals himself in glory. 3 Our God will come and will not keep silence; * before him there is a consuming flame, and round about him a raging storm. 4 He calls the heavens and the earth from above * to witness the judgment of his people. 5 "Gather before me my loyal followers, * those who have made a covenant with me and sealed it with sacrifice." 6 Let the heavens declare the rightness of his cause; * for God himself is judge.

THE SECOND LESSON God’s light seen clearly in the face of Christ • 2 Corinthians 4:3-6

Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The people stand to sing the Sequence Hymn and remain standing for the Gospel.

SEQUENCE HYMN Christ upon the mountain peak • Mowsley • Hymnal 129

THE GOSPEL Revelation of Christ as God’s beloved Son • Mark 9:2-9

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!" Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

6

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The people are seated for the Sermon.

THE SERMON Harriet Tankard, Maeve Edwards

The people stand for the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People.

THE NICENE CREED Said by all

WE believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

The prayers of the people were written by the 1st through 5th grade Sunday school class. Please respond to each set of prayers by saying “Lord have mercy.”

We pray for our sister churches in Honduras and Haiti. We pray for people bringing the love and the word of Christ to people all over the world. For this we pray, Lord have mercy.

We pray for our president and our governor. We pray that our nation prospers. For this we pray, Lord have mercy.

We pray for less pollution. We pray that all the trees that are cut down are put to good use and recycled. We pray that all the animals that lose their homes find new ones. For this we pray, Lord have mercy.

We pray for firefighters and ambulance drivers. We pray that those they help will be ok. For this we pray, Lord have mercy.

We pray for the elderly and the sick. We pray that everyone who has cancer will survive. We pray for our family and friends. For this we pray, Lord have mercy.

7

We pray for our family members, pets, and friends who have died. We pray that those who have died will have a good time in heaven. For this we pray, Lord have mercy.

The presider adds the prayer lists, and a concluding collect.

The people kneel for the Confession.

CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION Confession said by all

MOST merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE PEACE All stand

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit.

The people greet one another with a sign of God’s peace and then are seated.

THE HOLY COMMUNIONI

THE OFFERTORY

The people remain seated while their offerings of bread and wine are brought forward and their monetary gifts are received. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM Here, O my Lord • Barry Rose

(b. 1934)

Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face, here faith would touch and handle things unseen; here grasp with firmer hand the eternal grace, and all my weariness upon thee lean. Here would I feed upon the bread of God, here drink with thee the royal wine of heaven, here would I lay aside each earthly load, here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven. I have no help, but thine, nor do I need another arm save thine to lean upon; it is enough, enough, my Lord, indeed, my strength is in thy might, thy might alone.

The people stand to sing the Presentation Hymn, and remain standing through the Sanctus & Benedictus.

PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS Said by all

WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

MINISTRATION OF COMMUNION

All are welcome to come to the altar. There is a place set here for you. Gluten-free wafers are available on request. Baptized Christians may receive Communion. Those not yet baptized may receive a blessing. The ushers will guide you forward.

We send you out to share Communion this day. May you carry the prayers of all of us as you take this sacrament of Christ’s presence. May those who receive it from you be strengthened and encouraged in that community we have together in our Lord Jesus Christ.

THE POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER Said by all, standing

Let us pray

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end.
