Theres No Place Like HomeBy Rev. Greg Bunton, Associate Minister of Student MinistriesThe past few years

    our students have

    traveled long

    distances for their

    summer mission

    trips.They have

    been to SouthCarolina, Louisi-

ana, Colorado, and who could forget the

2 weeks they spent on the road last sum-

mer, covering thousands of miles across

the central United States? Its exhausting

just thinking about all that driving!

As we started planning our trip for

this summer, we thought it might be

nice to stay a bit closer to home. Being a

Kansas boy from Wichita, I immediately

realized that we should go home that

is to say MY home. In the 16+ years Ihave been at FCC, I have yet to take a

group back to my roots and reach out to

the community that nurtured me in my

formative years. Yes, we have stopped

in a couple of times, but nothing like this.

We are about to take Wichita by storm!

This Sunday, 25 high school students

and 5 adult sponsors will hit the road for

the short 2-hour drive to Wichita. I love

the sound of that 2 hours! We will be

staying at Pine Valley Christian Church.

You would think we would stay at myhome church, Riverside Christian, and we

would have loved to, but they are missing

one critical component for us showers!

However, there is a great connection with

Pine Valley other than being a Disciple

church My former youth pastor from

when I was in middle school is the Senior

Pastor at Pine Valley. Hopefully she

doesnt tell any stories on me!

During the course of the week our

students will be doing a number of proj-

ects. They will be cleaning out a housethat is very large, dirty, and filled to the

rim with stuff. Have you ever seen the

    show Hoarders? Exactly! They will

also be working at the Lords Diner, a

community kitchen that serves over 400

homeless each night. In addition to that,

they will work at the Kansas Christian

Home, the Wichita Childrens Home, an

    Habitat for Humanity.

Of course, what would a trip be

without some fun? Our evenings will be

filled with a presentation of Fiddler onthe Roof by the Wichita Music Theater,

kayaking on the river, a tour of the Un-

derground Salt Mines, and stock car race

    at 81 Speedway!

We invite your prayers as our stu-

dents embark on this great adventure.

If you would like to follow us on our

trip, read our daily blog posts at

Let Freedom Ring!Few things are more exciting than Independence Day. Celebrating the 4th of July and the

Declaration of Independence is a hallmark event for any of us. Flags, firework displays, mus

cal concerts, parades, and family gatherings typify our patriotic and national spirit. And our

church family is no exception. Freedom of religion is a grand gift to all of us. So, in conjun

tion with the 40th Anniversary of the Edmond Liberty Fest Parade held on July the 4th,

2012 we will celebrate Freedom Fest and the free distribution of hot dogs, chips,

water, and watermelon to parade attendees. This wonderful event affords us the perfectopportunity to partner with our community and demonstrate our deep commitment to Open

Doors and the practice of radical hospitality.

But thats not all. On Sunday, July 1, 2012, we will also host a unique celebration

for our church family. Reflecting on our freedoms, and especially the freedom of religion, we

will gather as a thankful people in a common time for Sunday School followed by a unified

worship and a church wide, indoor picnic. There will be lots of chicken, potato and pasta sal

ads, beans, desserts, and plenty of Open Armsi.e., time together as a community of faith.

So mark both dates on your calendar and plan to join us for these celebrations. Let them

be days of national patriotism, community, and faith in action. Sign-up at the table display

in the rotunda or online atfccedmond.org/freedomfest to serve with us and/or make

donations for either event. Your Evangelism and Membership Ministry Teams
