Asking Good QuestionsBy Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister

    Vol. 4 No. 6 February 16, 2012

Isidor Rabi, the Nobellaureate inphysics forhis work

    on nuclearmagneticresonance,was onceasked,

Why did you become a scientist, rather than a doctor or lawyer orbusinessman, like the other immigrantkids in your neighborhood?

Rabi responded, My mothermade me a scientist without everintending it. Every other Jewish mother

in Brooklyn would ask her child afterschool, Nu, did you learn anythingtoday? But not my mother. Izzy, she would say, Did you ask a goodquestion today? That differenceasking good questionsmade mebecome a scientist.

I like that insight, because I thinkthat asking good questions makesone a good Christian as well. Wedont come to church to be spoonfed our faith. We come with serious

concerns and questions about our life, its meaning and what we are called tobe and do. I have rediscovered thosequestions once again while meetingwith our Pastors Class kids. Thesefifth-graders preparing for baptism asksome of the best faith questions I haveever heard. And it makes me thinkabout my faith as well. You cant takeanything about your faith for grantedwith these kids around!

One of the things I have taken for

granted has been my Lenten journey.I have always routinely given some-thing up for Lent, like chocolate. Butthis year our church will be focusingnot on giving up, but on taking on forLent. Our study and worship focusis Chocolate for Lent, based on themovie Chocolat. Our journey begins

on February 26th. We had a wonder-ful gathering last Sunday to watch themovie in preparation for our Lentenjourney, and several Sunday Schoolclasses are using a great study guide to

help them in their Lenten journey. Youwill not be required to see the movieto worship with us on the Sundays ofLent, but you may want to see it, as itbrings up many issues of acceptance, forgiveness and faith that are a part ofour Lent. (see details on page two)

The question we are asking thisLent iswhy do we give somethingup for Lent? It is our preparation foraccepting the wonderful gift of Easter. But our answer this year may beLet

us celebrate all of Gods gifts in ourlives. We dont have to deny ourselvesto see the many miracles that surroundus in our everyday lives. A littlechocolate may be just what we need.

See you on Sunday as wecontinue to ask those intriguingquestions together.

    Join Us For Ash Wednesday

Services February 22ndSince the Middle Ages, Christians have observed AshWednesday as the first day of the season of Lent. On thisday, in many churches, worshipers receive ashes on theforehead as a reminder of their sorrow for their sins. Theashes are made by burning palm branches left over fromthe previous years Palm Sunday. We welcome you to ourAsh Wednesday services this week as together we begin thejourney to Easter.

For most of us the season of Lent brings tomind giving something up. But Lent isnt just aseason of self-denial, nor is it about short-termritual changes that dont impact our lives afterEaster. And its certainly not about just givingup chocolate!

Lent is a 40-day season for growth andexploration. Its a time of preparation for achange to the post-resurrection life.

Using Hilary Brands book Chocolate for Lentwe will be exploring a Lenten seasonthats about more than what you give up. The study uses themes from the 2000 AcademyAward nominated film Chocolat, coupled with scriptures, and creates a space for deepernsights into self-discipline, self-giving, conversion and accepting the stranger.

The ollowing classes will oer the fve week Chocolate or Lent study begining Sunday, February 26:

    9:30 a.m. Challengers (Room 116) 9:30 a.m. Seekers (Room 113)
