1/. PROTECTION

Imerys’ Packaging Portfolio includes a range of fully formulated,ready-for-use, water-based coating solutions for fibre-basedpackaging industry – both for food and non-food segments. Ourcoatings enhance the surface and functional quality of paper &board based packaging. Key application areas covered by ourproduct portfolio are Moisture Vapour barrier, Oil & Greasebarrier, Water barrier and Mineral Oil barrier. The portfolio alsocovers coating formulations for printability of corrugated board(precoat primers and white coatings).

In addition to a portfolio of “ready-to-use” coating solutions,we’re also able to fine-tune our coatings to find the optimumcombination of oleophobicity, hydrophobicity, moisture vapourbarrier, printability, stiffness, opacity, machine runnability andeconomics in our formulation to match your specificrequirements! Our custom-made coatings ensure optimizedperformance. Our technical experts can guide you in the choiceof formulation and its application method. Our coatings can beapplied by conventional dispersion coating techniques, oralternatively, via a printing press. They are easy to handle, andsafe to apply.

2/. COST REDUCTION

High premium is placed by brand owners and retailers on packagingthat can effectively communicate the brand image and positioning oftheir products to the end consumer. For board producers and convertersof packaging, this translates into carefully developing,selecting andadapting packaging grade board that can meet highly demandingprinting specifications during the printing and converting process.

High levels of micro and macro level smoothness of the packaging boardsurface is mandatory for high quality print, especially so in rotogravureprinting.

Beyond the appearance of finished product, properties of the top surfaceare also paramount to withstand demanding packaging convertingoperations. Important issues are the pore structure of the surface whichwill impact penetration of printing inks but also penetration of otherfunctional substances such as glue and varnish.

The surface also has to be designed with respect to mechanicalproperties, so that when deformation occurs during folding, creasingand flexing, the failure occurs in the correct location and the appearanceof the product is not impaired by unsightly cracking at the fold. Thesurface chemistry of this top layer must also be suitable to preventdelamination and failure at the interface if the product is going to belaminated.

In light of these technical challenges, Imerys has developed highperformance coating formulations that allow to meet stringent qualityrequirements in terms of printability, smoothness, gloss, brightness andopacity; and also allows to meet functional requirements in terms ofbarrier, varnishability, glueability, and strength for packaging grade paperand board.

Within the corrugated packaging segment, high standards ofprintability requirements is still a niche but a growing sub segment,thanks mostly to the growth in demand for retail ready packaging.Thisdemand is also driving the need to have improved appearance of thecorrugated board substrate in terms of its whiteness. Single or doublecoated systems of Imerys water-based formulations can achieve asmooth, white surface that can be then be treated with wax if required.These coatings are often applied using conventional dispersion coatingequipment at the substrate producer or via offline coaters at theconverters. Whereas flexographic printers can be used to apply coatingsthat provide gloss effect on the corrugated packaging or providefunctional properties like anti-skid or scratch resistance.

From virgin fibre to Old Corrugated Containers, from latex forbarrier coating to opacifiers like TiO2 – raw materials are a sourceof increasing and volatile costs for players in the packaging valuechain. Imerys’ Packaging Portfolio includes mineral-basedsolutions for pre-coat and top coat that have allowed ourcustomers to reduce both raw material and process costs.

Our capabilities for pigment shape engineering have allowed usto develop blends that effectively combine platy and blockypigment particles to deliver uniquely enhanced coverage of theboard which in turn translates into cost savings for boardproducer in terms of reduced TiO2 usage, reduced fibre usage,and also reducedcalendar loading.

Our E-type Solutions are perfect examples of blends thatharness the true potential of mineral usage in pre and top coatformulations to deliver on cost savings.

Intensity of use of Imerys mineral-based solutions in coatingformulations can reach upto 12% for recycled board and 19%for virgin boxboard.

Imerys’ Packaging Portfolio includes paper making solutions thathave a direct impact on improving plant productivity. A case in pointis LinerMAXTM. Improved dewatering, reduced drying timerequirement and reduced energy demands for drying are some ofthe benefits of LinerMAXTM.

Another example of a solution from Imerys’ Packaging Portfoliohaving a direct impact on improving plant productivity is ourtalc based solution - Mistron -for pitch and stickies control. Thesolution attracts pitch and stickies onto its platelets, making themharmless and preventing them from agglomerating. Moreover, thesolution allows to neutralize the tacky nature of the contaminant.Thus productivity improvements follow as felt and wire blockingproblems and also deposits on pressing and drying cylinders areeliminated.

5/. ENVIRONMENT

Fibre-based packaging is the only packaging material which is bio-based, isrecyclable, is based on renewable resources, and also, widely perceived byend users of packaging material as the “green” solution. However, forovercoming the limitations in terms of barrier properties of fibre-basedmaterials (sensitivity to water, moisture, grease…), the primary solutionsused by the packaging industry have so far revolved around fluorochemicaltreatments, wax coating, poly coating, chrome stearate, etc. Other thanbeing a source of increased and volatile costs, often such barrier treatmentsalso render the packaging difficult to recycle.

Uses of Imerys formulated coating solutions provide a moreenvironmentally-friendly alternative as such barrier coatings do not impactthe recyclability of the product and are neutral to compostability.

Mineral extenders from our Packaging Portfolio reduce the energy requiredto repulp packaging material, thereby making it easy to recycle. Theefficiency of flotation methods for separating the pulp from unwantedmaterials is also increased by the presence of our mineral-based solutions.
