The Significance of The Sacraments Hello Everyone! Undoubtedly, we are still in the season of Easter, the resurrection of Jesus fills us with the gift of His peace, comfort and compassion. As faithful, after the Easter celebration we begin to prepare ourselves to receive various sacraments. Hence, I invite everyone to reflect with me upon the significance of sacraments in life. As St. Augustin men-tions that the Sacraments are the salvation of those who use them rightly, and the damnation of those who misuse them. Specifically, we have to comprehend the purpose of the Sac-raments: In fact, the purpose of the Sacraments is to sanctify men, to build up the body of Christ (Catholic community), and to give worship to God (build and maintain Catholic Culture). Besides, in the Catholic Church, we have seven sacraments. Each of the seven sacraments has its own importance in the life of the church and each sacrament is intrinsically connected that binds all together with Christ and with the Church. For instance; 1) Baptism: This makes you a member of the community and of your parish family. It’s the first sacrament of initiation. 2) Reconciliation: This sacrament helps to reconcile with God and with our neighbors as well. Of course, this sacrament is attached with repentance, forgiveness of sins and penance. 3) Eucharist: This is the second sacrament of initiation and this sacrament feeds our souls. We Catholics believe Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, who gathers community together and also who establishes communion and fellowship with one another as well. 4) Confirmation: This is the third and final sacrament of initiation, which strengthens the faith and brings us closer to God with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 5) Anointing of the Sick: This sacrament is given to all those who are ill, both physically and mentally. This sacrament is meant to offer physical, mental, or emotional healing through Christ. Particularly, this and Reconciliation are known as the Sacraments of Healing. Very often, this sacrament is understood as the sacrament of dying, but in reality, this is a healing sacra-ment, which is combined with Reconciliation and Eucharist. 6) Marriage: This sacrament binds two people, a man and a woman, as one. We Catholics don’t believe in divorce, but an-nulments are possible if the marriage ended up invalid. In order to be a valid marriage, both partners must be of age, giving free consent, and be free will. Particularly, both must be open to the possibility of children but there must be no deceit. 7) Holy Orders: This sacrament is given to priests and dea-cons. It is part of the laying on the hands and the passing on the authority of the Apostles. This sacrament promotes to serve both God and faithful totally. Beloved, thus all these sacraments are facilitating to reinforce our faith journey and to deepen our spiritual life. Therefore, let us try to approach them with proper understanding. Eventually, I want to conclude with the saying of St. Gregory Nazianzen. He says, “These three things God requires of all the Baptized: right faith in the heart, truth on the tongue, temperance in the body”.

El Significado De Los Sacramentos Hola a todos! Sin lugar a dudas, todavía estamos en la tempora-da de Pascua, la resurrección de Jesús nos llena con el don de su paz, la comodidad y la compasión. Como fieles, después de la celebración de la Pascua comenzamos a prepararnos para reci-bir varios sacramentos. Por lo tanto, yo invito a todos para refle-xionar conmigo sobre el significado de los sacramentos en la vida. Como San Agustín menciona que los sacramentos son la

salvación de quienes los usan correctamente y la condenación de quienes los abusan. Específicamente, tenemos que comprender el propósito de los sacramentos: De hecho, el propósito de los sacramentos es santifi-car a los hombres, edificar el cuerpo de Cristo (comunidad católica), y para rendir culto a Dios (construir y mantener la cultura católica). Además, en la Iglesia Católica, hay siete sacramentos. Cada uno de los siete sacramentos tiene su propia importancia en la vida de la iglesia y cada sacramento está intrínsecamente conectado, lo que une a todos con Cristo y con la Iglesia. Por ejemplo; 1) El bautismo: Esto hace que todos como miembro de la comu-nidad y de su familia parroquial. Es el primer sacramento de inicia-ción. 2) la Reconciliación: Este sacramento ayuda a reconciliarnos con Dios y también con nuestro prójimo. Por supuesto, este sacramento se une con el arrepentimiento, el perdón de los pecados y la peniten-cia. 3) La Eucaristía: Este es el segundo sacramento de iniciación y este sacramento alimenta nuestras almas. Como católicos, creemos que Jesucristo está presente verdaderamente en la Eucaristía, que reúne a la comunidad y también que establece la comunión unos con otros. 4) La Confirmación: Este es el tercer y último sacramento de iniciación, que fortalece la fe y nos acerca a Dios con la guía del Es-píritu Santo. 5) La Unción de los Enfermos: Este sacramento se da a todos los enfermos, ambos físicamente y mentalmente. Este sacramento está destinado para ofrecer curación física, mental o emocional a través de Cristo. Particularmente, este y la reconciliación son conocidos como los sacramentos de curación. Desafortunadamente, este sacramento es entendida como el sacramento para morir, pero en realidad, este es un sacramento de curación, que se combina con la reconciliación y la Eucaristía. 6) El matrimonio: Este sacramento une a dos personas; un hom-bre y una mujer, como una sola persona. Como católicos, no cree-mos en el divorcio, pero las anulaciones son posibles si el matrimo-nio resulta inválido. Con el fin de ser un matrimonio válido, ambas partes deben ser en la edad adecuada, dar su consentimiento libre, y en libre voluntad. Particularmente, ambos deben estar abiertos a la posibilidad de tener hijos, pero no debe haber ningún engaño. 7) Las órdenes sagradas: Este sacramento es dado a los sacerdo-tes y diáconos. que es parte de la imposición de manos y la transmi-sión de la autoridad de los Apóstoles. Sobre todo, este sacramento promueve a servir a Dios y fiel totalmente. Hermanos, así, todos estos sacramentos están facilitando a reforzar nuestro camino de fe y profundizar nuestra vida espiritual. Entonces, vamos a tratar de acercarse a los sacramentos con la comprensión adecuada. Finalmente, quiero concluir con el dicho de San Gregorio Nacianceno. Él dice: “Estas tres cosas que Dios requiere de todos los bautizados: la fe en el corazón, la verdad en la lengua, la templanza en el cuerpo”.

LORD, SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT

In today’s responsorial psalm the Church sings out: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” All three readings describe how God has answered that prayer already. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles and in the Gospel passage from John, we read of astonishing events that called cowering disciples to step out of hiding and proclaim news that would condemn them and change the world forever! In the second reading Paul’s words reach out into the fu-ture to us: “we were all given to drink of one Spir-it” (1 Corinthians 12:13). It is our task to truly pray today’s psalm re-sponse. Let us together beg the Holy Spirit to renew the earth by renewing the Church, sending many more men and women to serve in its various minis-tries.

SEÑOR, ENVÍA TU ESPÍRITU

En el salmo responsorial de hoy la Iglesia canta: “Envía tu Espíritu, Señor y repuebla la faz de la tierra”. Las tres lecturas describen cómo Dios ha respondido ya a esta oración. En la primera lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles y en el pasaje del Evangelio según San Juan, leemos acerca de acontecimientos asom-brosos que impulsaron a los discípulos acobardados a salir de su escondite y ¡proclamar la noticia que los con-denaría y cambiaría el mundo para siempre! En la segun-da lectura las palabras de Pablo se extienden hacia el fu-turo, hasta nosotros: “a todos se nos ha dado a beber del mismo Espíritu” (1 Corintios 12:13). Es nuestra tarea rezar verdaderamente el responsorio del Salmo de hoy. Pidamos juntos al Espíritu Santo que renueve la Tierra al renovar la Iglesia con el envío de más hombres y mujeres que presten servicio en los diversos ministerios. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
