HOSPITALIDAD SENCILLA

Todos nosotros anhelamos ser acogidos y pertenecer. Nuestra fe cristiana nos llama a crecer más allá de nuestra zona de confort o, como al Papa Francisco tanto le gusta decir, “salir de nosotros mismos.”

La hospitalidad es un sello distintivo del discipulado. Jesús lo consideró tan importante que hizo de la hospitalidad una medida por la cual seremos juzgados: “Porque tuve hambre, y me disteis de comer, tuve sed y me disteis de beber, fui forastero y me recibisteis” (Mt 25:35) . Así que, ¿por qué es tan importante la hospitalidad para los cristianos? Qué implica la bienvenida?

La hospitalidad se basa en la convicción de que todos los seres humanos, independientemente de su condición, estado de vida o cultura, tienen valor y dignidad. Esta convicción se manifiesta en el respeto y en la aceptación no solo de aquellos que son cómodamente similar a nosotros sino especialmente de aquellos que no están familiarizados o parecen extraños o extranjeros. Hospitalidad y bienvenida demandan un nivel de apertura que algunos podrían encontrar de miedo. Dejemos que la Carta a los Hebreos nos recuerde, “No se olviden de la hospitalidad, porque por ella algunos, sin saberlo, han entretenido ángeles” (13: 2).

La próxima vez que vaya a misa considere cómo puede ayudar a crear un sentido de bienvenida y pertenencia. Aquí hay algunas ideas simples:

• Nuestra liturgia del domingo comienza desde que el Espíritu Santo nos reúne en el estacionamiento y las aceras camino a la iglesia. Hay que sonreír y saludar a cada persona que pase con un “hola” o “buenos días”.

• Sentarse hasta el centro de la banca y dejar espacio para otros que podrían llegar más tarde.

• Prestar atención a los que están sentados a su alrededor y ofrecer ayuda en la búsqueda de himnos y oraciones si alguien parece estar luchando para seguir adelante.

• Agradecer a visitantes o familias con niños pequeños por ser parte de la comunidad de oración ese día.

SIMPLE HOSPITALITY

We all yearn to be welcomed and belong. Our Christian faith calls us to stretch and grow beyond our comfort zone or, as Pope Francis is so fond of saying, “go out of ourselves.”

Hospitality is a hallmark of discipleship. Jesus considered it so important that he made hospitality a measure by which we will be judged: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt 25:35). So, why is hospitality so important for Christians? What does wel-coming entail?

Hospitality is grounded in our conviction that all human beings, regardless of status, state of life or cultural back-ground, have worth and dignity. This conviction mani-fests itself in respecting and accepting not just those who are comfortably similar to us but also those, especially those, who are unfamiliar or seem strange or foreign. Hospitality and welcoming demands a level of openness that some might find scary. Let the Letter to the Hebrews remind us, “Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels” (13:2).

The next time you go to Mass consider how you might help create a sense of welcome and belonging. Here are a few simple ideas:

• Our Sunday liturgy starts as the Holy Spirit gathers us from the parking lot and the sidewalks into the church. Smile or greet each person you pass with a “hello” or “good morning.”

• Sit toward the center of a pew to leave room for others who might arrive later.

• Pay attention to those sitting around you and offer help in finding hymns or prayers if someone seems to be struggling to follow along.

• Thank visitors or families with young children for be-ing part of the praying community that day.

Be truly sorry for your sins. The essential act of Penance, on the part of the penitent, is contrition, a clear and decisive re-jection of the sin committed, together with a resolution not to commit it again, out of the love one has for God and which is reborn with repentance. The resolution to avoid committing these sins in the future (amendment) is a sure sign that your sor-row is genuine and authentic. This does not mean that a promise never to fall again into sin is necessary. A resolution to try to avoid the near occasions of sin suffices for true repentance. God's grace in coopera-tion with the intention to rectify your life will give you the strength to resist and overcome temptation in the future. El acto esencial de la Penitencia, por parte del penitente, es la contrición, un rechazo claro y decisivo del pecado cometido, junto con la resolución de no volver a cometerlo, del amor que uno tiene por Dios y que renace con arrepentimiento. La resolución para evitar cometer estos pecados en el futuro (enmienda) es una señal segura de que su pena es genuina y auténtica. Esto no significa que sea necesaria una promesa de nunca volver a caer en el pecado. Una resolución para tratar de evitar las ocasiones cercanas de pecado es suficiente para el verdadero arrepentimiento. La gracia de Dios en cooperación con la intención de rectificar su vida le dará la fuerza para resistir y superar la tentación en el futuro.
